In this study, the residual strength prediction models were proposed by measuring various residual strength according to pit characteristics for metallic water pipes such as cast iron pipe (CIP), ductile iron pipe (DIP), and steel pipe (SP). The exponential prediction model was better fitted to measured residual tensile strength for CIP. In case of DIP and SP, the prediction model using loss of strength was more exactly predicted compared with other model types. The fracture toughness were averagely $40.46kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$ for CIP, $85.27kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$ for DIP, and $92.27kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$ for SP, the determination coefficient ($R^2$) of between measured residual tensile strength and predicted values for residual strength prediction models using fracture toughness was estimated from 0.44 to 0.86. Especially, the proposed residual tensile strength prediction models were applied for the verification and reliability to CIPs and DIPs at 14 sites. The determination coefficient ($R^2$) between measured residual tensile strength and predicted values was estimated from 0.76 to 0.78. Therefore it was thought that the proposed residual tensile strength models could help to support resonable and economical decision of rehabilitation/replacement.

Failure analysis of pre-insulated pipe (SPPS 380, 400A) transporting high temperature water ($95{\sim}110^{\circ}C$) for a plant was carried out. The damaged area (${\Phi}5mm$) of pre-insulated pipe was found only on welds. The chemical composition of damaged pipe meets specification of carbon steel pipes for pressure service (KS D 3562). As results of microstructure analysis, crack propagated from outer to inside after pitting corrosion occurred on the outside surface. The non-metallic inclusion existed on the end of crack. And the non-metallic inclusion continuously and linearly formed along with the bond line of welds. Based on SEM-EDS analysis, the nonmetallic inclusions have higher Manganese (Mn) and Oxygen (O) content but sulfur (S) was not detected. As results of water quality analysis, hydrogen ion concentration and minerals like Fe, Mg, Si were in low level. But the content of dissolved oxygen (11.2 ppm) was slightly higher than that of standard. It seems that the cause of damaged pipe is grooving corrosion due to MnO inclusion formed on bond line and corrosion took place nearby welds.

The metallic underground pipes like as metropolitan water supply pipes and gas pipes have a screening effects for power induction phenomenon. Generally, urban area has more metallic underground facilities than rural areas because of its buildings or population density. So we can expect high screening effects for the power induction in urban areas, and we call it the city screening factor. We had carried out the measuring test in urban and rural area respectively 30 sites to prove the actual effects of city screening factor and we derived the numerical value of city screening effects. But we faced with a difficult question that how we can classify the real urban areas or rural areas correctly. In this paper, we introduce the classification method using density of building in test area to apply the city screening factor reasonably.

Water mains underground facilities are essential components to make up urban infrastructure. In order to manage these water mains underground facilities systematically and scientifically, GIS (Geographic Information System) had been constructed. For the sake of construction of GIS for water mains underground facilities, an exact underground detection and the construction of DB (Data Base) for buried water mains underground facilities should be preceded. In this study, in order to find out the ways to improve exact detection rate of data, the statistical analysis for the causes of detection raw degradation was done, and standardization methods of detection through a case study were suggested, When water mains underground facilities were measured, the detection of non-metallic water pipes was not carried out. The reason was that the results of detection was uncertain and detection was difficult because the assessment of public measurements was vulnerable. Moreover, due to the absence of standardized operating regulations for detection, systematic surveys weren't conducted. In this study, methods to standardize works over the detection of water mains underground facilities were presented so that we can improve the detection rate when we are doing that. As the proposals to improve detection rate, effective performance assessment over non-metallic pipes were presented, and related issues to supplement work regulations of public survey were described systematically.
The water-jet technique started by Bridgman can cut metal and alloys without harmful gas and fume. However, while this technique is convenient to cut metals and alloys, in the case of coated pipe, water jet induces the degradation of coatings on the pipes, and may facilitate structural failure, leakage, and loss of products. While there are many reports on the effect of water jet on cut metals and the damage of metallic materials, research on the effect of water impingement on the epoxy coatings has been little studied. In this work, we therefore control the velocity of water jet, distance between nozzle and specimen, and water temperature, and discuss the effect of water impingement on the epoxy coatings. Increasing water velocity and water temperature and reducing nozzle distance increased the degradation rates of three epoxy coatings were increased. Among three test parameters - water velocity, nozzle distance and water temperature, water temperature was relatively effective to increase the degradation rate of epoxy coatings.
The photovoltaic/thermal collectors (PV/T collectors) combine the solar thermal collector and photovoltaic modules. They can produce thermal energy in the form of hot air or hot water, and converts solar radiation into electricity. The collecctors can improve the electrical performance of PV modules as the heat from the PV module carried away by the thermal part of the system keeping temperatures lower. The basic water cooled PVT collector has metallic water pipes attached to the back of a PV collector. There are main parameters affecting the performance (electrical and thermal) of PVT collectors. This paper analyzed the experimental performance of glazed water PVT module, considering the parameters of solar radiation, inlet water temperature and ambient temperature. It found that solar radiation is the dominant factor for the electrical performance of the collector, and for the thermal performance the inlet water temperature and ambient temperature appeared to be more related.
Reduced thickness of the water pipes due to corrosion makes it difficult to perform the original functions since corrosion in metallic water pipes can occur over time. In this study, reliability model that can estimate the probability of pipe breakage is developed regarding corrosion depth increment according to service year. Probability of pipe breakage was calculated by FORM(First Order Reliability Method) and unsteady analysis was performed to analyze the statistical properties of water pressure. And KCIP(Korea Cast Iron Pipe) equation was adopted for the reliability function. Furthermore, change of pipe thickness was estimated by Nahal and Khelif equation and Romanoff equation. Therefore, pipe thickness was calculated due to change of corrosion depth and probability of pipe breakage was calculated and compared with 10, 20, 30 service years. From the results, probability of pipe breakage for network A is gradually increased from 6.8% to 8.6% according to service year of 10, 20, 30 when Nahal and Khelif equation is applied. And probability of pipe breakage for network A is also gradually increased from 6.4% to 8.9% according to service year of 10, 20, 30 when Romanoff equation is applied.

In this study, to determine whether it is possible to apply Polyethylene (PE) compound pipe, which was developed to solve the problem caused by the corrosion of the fire protection piping currently in usein water based fire extinguishing systems, we performed an actual mockup fire test. Since no test standard was available related to the developed compound pipe, we compared and analyzed domestic and international technical materials and test standards and selected suitable fire test standards to evaluate the performance of the PE compound pipe. we applied two fire test standards to the PE compound pipe, viz. those for CPVC and metallic pipes, and conducted a total of 6 experiments to evaluate its performance. According to the results of the first and second fire tests based on the test standard for the CPVC pipe, neither the fitting nor the piping was damaged or deformed and no leakage was observed in the pressure test, which was performed for 5 minutes. For the fire test based on the metallic pipe test standard, a total of 4 experiments were conducted. The first two experiments were conducted to simulate the wet piping system. In the results of this fire test, neither leakage nor rupture was observed from the PE compound pipe and no damage was caused, such as the secession of the PE material. However, in the next two experiments, which simulated the dry system, the PE compound pipe suffered damage and rupture, including deformation before the fire fighting water was discharged. Therefore, we found that the piping performance of the PE compound pipe did not undergo any deterioration, including fusion, deformation, or damage, in the wet piping system simulated fire test.
Pipes operating in the seawater environment faces cavitation degradation and corrosion of the metallic component, as well as a negative synergistic effect. Cavitation degradation shows the mechanism by which materials deteriorate by causing rapid change of pressure or high-frequency vibration in the solution, and introducing the formation and explosion of bubbles. In order to rate the cavitation resistance of materials, constant conditions have been used. However, while a dynamic cavitation condition can be generated in a real system, there has been little reported on the effect of ultrasonic amplitude on the cavitation resistance and mechanism of composites. In this work, 3 kinds of epoxy coatings were used, and the cavitation resistance of the epoxy coatings was evaluated in 3.5% NaCl at 15 ℃ using an indirect ultrasonic cavitation method. Eleven kinds of mechanical properties were obtained, namely compressive strength, flexural strength and modulus, tensile strength and elongation, Shore D hardness, water absorptivity, impact test, wear test for coating only and pull-off strength for epoxy coating/carbon steel or epoxy coating/rubber/carbon steel. The cavitation erosion mechanism of epoxy coatings was discussed on the basis of the mechanical properties and the effect of ultrasonic amplitude on the degradation of coatings.

The direct and indirect damages caused by fires in underground utility tunnels have a great impact on society as a whole, so efforts are needed to prevent and manage them in advance. To this end, research is ongoing to prevent disasters such as fire flooding by applying digital twin technology to underground utility tunnels. A network is required to transmit the sensed signals from each sensor to the platform. In essence, it is necessary to analyze the application of wireless networks in the underground utility tunnel environments because the tunnel lacks the reception range of external wireless communication systems. Within the underground utility tunnels, electromagnetic interference caused by transmission and distribution cables, and diffuse reflection of signals from internal structures, obstacles, and metallic pipes such as water pipes can cause distortion or size reduction of wireless signals. To ensure real-time connectivity for remote surveillance and monitoring tasks through sensing, it is necessary to measure and analyze the wireless coverage in underground utility tunnels. Therefore, in order to build a wireless network environment in the underground utility tunnels. this study minimized the shaded area and measured the actual cavity environment so that there is no problem in connecting to the wireless environment inside the underground utility tunnels. We analyzed the data transmission rate, signal strength, and signal-to-noise ratio for each section of the terrain of the underground utility tunnels. The obtained results provide an appropriate wireless planning approach for installing wireless networks in underground utility tunnels.
