A sensitive and selective determination method of Fe(II) ion by luminol-H2O2 system using a chelating reagent has been presented. A metal ion-chelating ligand complex such as Fe(II)-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) produced higher chemiluminescence (CL) intensity as well as longer lifetime in luminol-H2O2 system than metal exist as free ions. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of Cu(II) and Pb (II) complexes with chelating reagents in luminol-H2O2 system was lost since chelating reagents act as a masking agent although free Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions have high catalytic activity. On the optimized conditions, the calibration curve of Fe(II) ion was linear over the range from 1.0×10-7 to 2.0×10-5 M with correlation coefficient of 0.996. The detection limit was calculated to be 4.0×10-8 M.
Four novel metal-organic complexes $[Cd_2(IP)_2(TBZ)_2(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}(H_2O)$ (1), $[Zn_4(IP)_4(TBZ)_4]{\cdot}2(H_2O)$ (2), $[Zn_2(BTC)(TBZ)_2(CO_2H)]$ (3), [Co(PDC)(TBZ)] (4) (where IP = isophthalate; TBZ = thiabendazole; BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate; PDC = pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylate) have been prepared and characterized by IR spectrum, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray structure analysis reveals that 1, 2, and 3 are one-dimensional chain polymers, while 4 is a two-dimensional network polymer. The TBZ acts as a typical chelating ligand coordinated to the metal center in all complexes. The 1D chain architecture of 1 is constructed from isophthalates and cadmium atoms. A simultaneous presence of chelating, monodentate and bidentate coordination modes of IP ligands is observed in complex 2. In complex 3, the 16-membered rings are alternately arranged forming an infinite 1D double-chain structure. The 2D skeleton of 4 is formed by cobalt ions as nodes and PDC dianions as spacers, through coordination bonds. The hydrogen bonds and ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking play important roles in affecting the final structure where complexes 1 and 3 have 2D supramolecular networks, while complexes 2 and 4 have 3D supramolecular architectures.
Two novel binuclear metal-organic coordination complexes $[Cd_2(L)_2(bpy)_2(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}6H_2O$ (1), $[Cd_2(L)_2(phen)_2-(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}2H_2O$ (2) (where L = 2-methylquinoline-3,4-dicarboxylate dianion, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal Xray diffraction, spectral method (IR), elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Both 1 and 2 consist of two Cd(II) atoms bridged by two monoatomic bridging carboxylate groups from two L ligands, and the second carboxylate group of each L is monodentately coordinated to Cd(II), creating a sevenmembered chelating ring. The coordination at each metal nucleus is completed by a water molecule and a chelating bidentate molecule. The 3D structures of the complexes are stabilized by ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking interactions and hydrogen-bonds.
Phenyl styryl ketone ligands 1-5 containing different functional groups were synthesized and attached to the aminated poly (styrene-divinvlbenzene) copolymer through diazotization. The coupling of the ligand with polymer was confirmed by FT-IR. The variation of the uptakes of Pb (II) or Cu (II) ions loaded in the prepared polymers (6-10) was examined at different pH values. An increase of metal uptake in the polymers was observed with the increase in pH value in aqueous solution.
New azomethine metal complexes were synthesized systematically and characterized. Beryllium, magnesium, or zinc ions were used as a central metal cation and aromatic azomethines (L1-L4) were employed as a chelating anionic ligand. Emission peaks o f the complexes in both solution and solid states were observed mostly at the region of 400-500 nm in the luminescence spectra, where blue light was emitted. Three of them (BeL1 (Ⅰ), ZnL2 (Ⅱ), and ZnL3 (Ⅲ)) were sublimable and thus were applied to the organic light-emitting devices (OLED) as an emitting layer, respectively. The device including the emitting layer of Ⅰ exhibited white emission with the broad luminescence spectral range. The device with the emitting layer of Ⅱ showed blue luminescence with the maximum emission peak at 460 nm. Their ionization potentials, electron affinities, and electrochemical band gaps were investigated with cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical gaps of 2.98 for I, 2.70 for Ⅱ, and 2.63 eV for Ⅲ were found to be consistent with their respective optical band gaps of 3.01, 2.95 and 2.61 eV within an experimental error. The structure of OLED manufactured in this study reveals that these complexes can work as electron transporting materials as well.
The interaction of cadmium (II) ion with quercetin, qurecitrin and (+)-catechin was investigated in aqueous solution at various pH. The flavonoid/cadmium stochiometries for cadmium (II) binding to flavonoid have been determined by UV-visible spectroscopy. 1:1 Cd(II)-Flavonoid complex had a maximum absorbance and showed the bathochromic shift of the long-wavelength band of the UV-vis spectra in the alkaline pH, that occurs upon complexation, is due to a ligand-tometal charge transfer. The optimal concentration of Cd(II)-flavonoid complexes showed that complexation reaction could be classified in the following way: 55.27 ${\mu}M$ catechin > 54.72 ${\mu}M$ quercetin > 53.52 ${\mu}M$ quercitrin at the chelating site level. These results suggest that Cd(II)-flavonoid complex has the optimal condition of chelation in 0.2 M $NH_3$ - 0.2 M $NH_4Cl$ (pH 8.0) solution.
The structures of modified Ti$(OPr^i)_4$ with chelating ligands (L) such as ethylacetoacetate (Etac), acetylacetone (Acac) and methylacetoacetate (Mtac) were identified by using IR, ¹H NMR and $^13C$ NMR spectroscopies, and the octahedral structure was confirmed after modification. The pre-edge peaks of XANES spectra of modified metal alkoxides also denoted the mixture of five-fold and six-fold structures. The EXAFS fitting results showed the local structure around Ti atom after alkoxide modification. The hydrolysis-condensation rates of modified Ti alkoxide with organic additives were investigated by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The Ti$(OPr^i)_4$ modified by Acac was less reactive toward hydrolysis-condensation reaction than those modified by the other alkoxides, which can be attributed to the stable ligand structure between Ti$(OPr^i)_4$ and Acac. The small particle size of modified Ti$(OPr^i)_4$ sol was obtained when Acac was employed.
In order to investigate a practical application of fibrous adsorbents to heavy metal ions, amidoxime fibers, as a particular class of solid chelate agents, were prepared by hydroxylamine treatment for acrylic fibers in a recipe of neutralization. Among the important problems from plant effluents are toxic concentrations of heavy metals such as copper. Accordingly, the properties of Cu (II) adsorption and its chelates were studied. The results obtained are as follows; The fibrous adsorbents have the property of increasing the swelling volumes by amidoximation. The adsorption of Cu (II) ion is characterized by an endothermic reaction, which is estimated as the plus values in the enthalpy change ($\delta$H=1.30 Kcal/mol. and 3.14 Kcal/mol.). The Cu (II) ions are adsorbed in the range of pH $3\~8$ and the maximum adsorptions are occurred about pH 8. Owing to the anions $(NO_3^-,\;Cl^-)$ of copper salts, amidoxime fibers form 1:1 and 2:1 (ligand: metal) chelating complexes with Cu (II). The nitrate anion chelates to amide I (NH) of amidoxime groups and the chlorine anion does to nitrosyl (NO). These effects relate to the crystallization of the complex and the thermal property.
