  • We investigate a method for the electrochemical preparation of titanium dioxide/carbon nanotube ($TiO_2$/CNT) composites involving the electroplating of Ti in a titanium n-butoxide (TNB) electrolyte into a CNT matrix. The BET surface areas of $TiO_2$/CNT composites decreased as electrochemical operating time increased. Changes in XRD patterns showed a typical anatase type on the $TiO_2$/CNT composite prepared with a CNT matrix by the electroplating method in the TNB solution. In SEM micrographs, the titanium complex particles were uniformly distributed on the CNT surface. The results of chemical elemental analysis for the $TiO_2$/CNT composites showed that most of the spectra for these samples produced stronger peaks for carbon and Ti metal than those of any other element. Finally, the prominent photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activities of the $TiO_2$/CNT composites could be attributed to the combined effects of photodegradation of $TiO_2$, electron assistance of CNT and the application of a sufficient voltage.

  • Activated carbon fiber (ACF) was modified with MnS nanoparticles to prepare MnS-ACF, and it was employed for preparation of MnS-$ACF/TiO_2$ composites with titanium (IV) n-butoxide (TNB). The properties of MnS-$ACF/TiO_2$ composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, and EDX. EDX results showed the presence of C, O, and Ti as major elements and traces of the metal elements Mn and S. The photocatlytic activity was evaluated by degradation of methyl blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dye. The results demonstrated that as-prepared samples could effectively photodegrade MB and MO under UV irradiation. Subsequently, the decomposition of MB solution showed the combined effects of adsorptions by ACF and enhanced photocatalytic effect by $TiO_2$. Finally, the photocatalytic effect increased due to photo-induced-electron absorption effect by ACF and electron trap effect by comodified MnS nanoparticles.

  • Titanium carbide(TiC) and titanium nitride(TiN) flims were deposited on $Si_3N_4$-TiC composite cutting tools by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) using $TiCl_4-CH_4-H_2$ and $TiCl_4-H_2-N_2$ gas mixtures, respectively. The nonmetal to metal ratio of deposit increases with increasing $m_{C/Ti}$(mole ratio of CH$_4$ to TiCl$_4$ in the input) for TiC coatings and $m_{N/Ti}$(mole ratio of N$_2$ to TiCl$_4$ in the input) for TiN coatings. The nearly stoiahiometric films could be obtained under the deposition condition of $m_{C/Ti}$ between 1.15 and 1.61 for TiC, and that of $m_{N/Ti}$ between 25 and 28 for TiN. Also maximum microhardness of the coatings can be obtained in these ranges. The interfacial region of TiC coatings on $Si_3N_4$-TiC ceramics is wider than that of TiN coatings according to Auger depth profile analysis, which indicates good interfacial bonding for TiC. Experimental results show that TiC coatings have an randomly equiaxed structure and Columnar structure with(220) preferred orientation can be obtained for TiN coatings. And, multilayer coatings have a dense and equiaxed structure.

  • This paper investigates the influence of material properties of the acoustic damping layer in the low noise hydrophone designed in the previous paper. For increase of the insensitivity of the hydrophone to external noises, acoustic impedance and damping coefficients are selected and the effects of the selected material property on the hydrophone response to the external noises are simulated with finite element method (FEM). The results show that the damping coefficients are not influential to the structural vibration decoupling from the sensing element. On the other hand, the optimum acoustic impedance of compliant layer is estimated which is smaller than 1 Mrayl or larger than 4 Mrayl. However polymer materials, which are in general use for acoustic window and damping layers, is not appropriate for the compliant materials of this hydrophone. Therefore development of new composite materials, i.e. ceramic-polymer composite or metal-ceramic composites etc., is required for the development of effective self noise suppressing underwater hydrophones.

  • The composites were fabricated 61[vol.%] ${\beta}$-SiC and 39[vol.%] $TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 12[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid by pressure or pressureless annealing at 1,650[$^{\circ}C$] for 4 hours. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$ were not observed in the microstructure and the phase analysis of the SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites. Phase analysis of SiC-$TiB_2$ composites by XRD revealed mostly of ${\alpha}$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and In Situ $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$. The relative density, the flexural strength and the Young's modulus showed the highest value of 88.32[%], 136.43[MPa] and 52.82[GPa] for pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composites at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of 0.0162[${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$] for pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composite at 25[$^{\circ}C$]. The electrical resistivity of the pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composite was positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) but the electrical resistivity of the pressureless annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composites was negative temperature coefficient resistance(NTCR) in the temperature ranges from 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 700[$^{\circ}C$].

  • In the case of using high temperature by coating ceramic/metal, large stress was produced due to difference of thermal expansion coefficient between those. And then lead to delamination. In order to relaxation of the stress A1$_2$O$_3$/SS316 composite powders with $10wt.%Al_2O_3$ compositional gradient and $10wt.%Al_2O_3$ agglomerated powder were made by spray drying method. These powders were sintered to improve the strength and to be plasma sprayed in order to fabricate the FGC(functionally graded coating). The influence of gun power, working distance and Ar pressure on the microstructure of the coating layer was studied in order to optimize the plasma spray conditions. It was proven that the optimum conditions were 40kw gun power, 5cm working distance and $100ft^3/h$ Ar flow for both powders. FGC with 10 compositional steps was fabricated and the total thickness was 1.3mm. FGC was heat treated at $1100^{\circ}C$for 10hours to evaluate the heat resisting characteristics.

  • Pulverization of two different sized micro-$B_4C$ particles (${\sim}10{\mu}m$ and ${\sim}150{\mu}m$) was investigated using a STS based high energy ball milling system. Shapes, generation of the impurities, and reduction of the particle size dependent on milling time and initial particle size were investigated using various analytic tools including SEM-EDX, XRD, and ICP-MS. Most of impurity was produced during the early stage of milling, and impurity content became independent on the milling time after the saturation. The degree of particle size reduction was also dependent on the initial $B_4C$ size. It was found that the STS nanoparticles produced from milling is strongly bounded with the $B_4C$ particles forming the $B_4C$/STS composite particles that can be used as a neutron absorbing nanocomposite. Based on the morphological evolution of the milled particles, a schematic pulverization model for the $B_4C$ particles was constructed.

  • Time-dependent creep analysis of a rotating functionally graded cantilever beam with trapezoidal longitudinal cross section subjected to thermal and inertia loading is investigated using first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The model described in this paper is a simple simulation of a turbine blade working under creep condition. The material is a metal based composite reinforced by a ceramic where the creep properties of which has been described by the Sherby's constitutive model. All mechanical and thermal properties except Poisson's ratio are assumed to be variable longitudinally based on the volume fraction of constituent. The principle of virtual work as well as first order shear deformation theory is used to derive governing equations. Longitudinal distribution of displacements and stresses are investigated for various volume fractions of reinforcement. Method of successive elastic solution is employed to obtain history of stresses and creep deformations. It is found that stresses and displacements approach their steady state values after 40000 hours. The results presented in this paper can be used for selection of appropriate longitudinal distribution of reinforcement to achieve the desired stresses and displacements.

  • This paper presents an analytical solution to study the combined effect of non-local and stretching effect on the vibration of advanced functionally graded (FG) nanoplates. A new quasi-3D plate theory is presented; there are only five unknowns and any shear correction factor is used. A new displacement field with a new shear warping function is proposed. The equilibrium equations of the FG nanoplates are obtained using the Hamilton principle and solved numerically using the Navier technique. The material properties of functionally graded nanoplates are presumed to change according to the power-law distribution of ceramic and metal constituents. The numerical results of this work are compared with those of other published results to indicate the accuracy and convergence of this theory. Hence, a profound parameterstudy is also performed to show the influence of many parameters of the functionally graded nanoplates on the free vibration responses is investigated.

  • Metal-ceramic composite membrane have been developed to separate hydrogen from mixed gases, particularly product streams generated during coal gasification and methane reforming. Cermet membrane was fabricated with palladium as hydrogen-permeable metal and $Y_2O_3$-stabilized $ZrO_2$ (YSZ) as ceramic supporter. As-prepared membrane showed dense structure with continuous channel of palladium. The hydrogen flux of Pd/YSZ membrane have been measured in the range of 0.5~2 atm with 100% hydrogen gas. The results indicate that the hydrogen flux was 0.333 mL/$min{\cdot}cm^2$ at $450^{\circ}C$ and 2 atm. The crack was formed in the surface and cross-section of membrane.
