An empirical formula for semiconductive metal oxides is proposed relating nonstoichiometric value x to a temperature or an oxygen partial pressure such that experimental data can be represented more accurately by the formula than by the well-known Arrhenius-type equation. The proposed empirical formula is log x = A + $B{\cdot}1000/T\;+\;C{\cdot}$exp$(-D{\cdot}1000/T)$ for a temperature dependence and $log\;{\times}\;=a\;+b{\cdot}log\;Po_2\;+\;c{\cdot}$exp$(-d{\cdot}log\;Po_2)$ for an oxygen partial pressure dependence. The A, B, C, D and a, b, c, d are parameters which are evaluated by means of a best-fitting method to experimental data. Subsequently, this empirical formula has been applied to the n-type metal oxides of $Zn_{1+x}O,\; Cd_{1+x}O,\;and\;PrO_{1.8003-x}$, and the p-type metal oxides of $CoO_{1+x},\; FeO_{1+x},\;and\;Cu_2O_{1+x}$. It gives a very good agreement with the experimental data through the best-fitted parameters within 6% of relative error. It is also possible to explain approximately qualitative characters of the parameters A, B, C, D and a, b, c, d from theoretical bases.

The corrosion protection of AA2024 PPy coated samples doping with nanosized metal oxides, including $TiO_2$ and $CeO_2$ nanoparticles and $Nd_2O_3$ nanorods, during exposure to the solutions of 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ and 3.5% NaCl was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques. The nanorods of $Nd_2O_3$ were synthesized by cathodic pulse electrochemical deposition technique. The barrier properties of the different PPy coatings containing nanosized metal oxides immersed in $H_2SO_4$ solution were ranked as follows: $Nd_2O_3$ > $TiO_2$ > $CeO_2$. Therefore, the $Nd_2O_3$ coating sample provided the highest corrosion protection at any time of immersion up to 72 hours after immersing in $H_2SO_4$ solution. On the other hand, the $CeO_2$ coating sample displayed the best anticorrosive properties among the other coating samples after immersion in NaCl solution up to 28 days. This is due to the inhibition effect of cerium ions on aluminum alloys at near-neutral solutions.

The purposes of this study were to analyze the microstructural and compositional changes of metal surfaces following different conditions of preoxidizing heat treatment, to investigate the composition of metal oxides, and to evaluate the effect of preoxidation and removal of surface oxides on microstructure and diffusion profiles. The techniques of EDAX (energy-dispersive analysis of x-ray), ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis), and EPMA (electron probe micro analysis) were used, along with SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The obtained results were as follows : 1. A surface of the specimen became rough and the amount of the metal oxides increased with increasing the heat treatment time and temperature and the partial pressure of oxygen. 2. At an air pressure of 28' vacuum, the higher the temperature and the longer the time of preoxidation, the higher Ni concentration was detected. 3. Cr concentration in the specimen heat treated with air was higher than that of with vacuum. 4. The oxides in the specimens were mainly composed of Ni and Cr oxides. On the globular growth particles, significant rises in Al concentration of Rexillium III and Ti concentration of Verabond were noted. 5. Atomic diffusion occurred at the ceramic-metal interface, furthermore the amount of the flux was increased with preoxidation heat treatment.

This work investigated the size and shape effect of ${\gamma}$-alumina-supported metal oxides on the hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides. Several metal oxides including Ag, Cu and Ru were used as the catalysts, and n-heptane as the reducing agent. For the Ag/${\gamma}$-alumina catalyst, the $NO_x$ reduction efficiency in the range of $250{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ increased as the size of Ag decreased (20 nm>50 nm>80 nm). The shape effect of metal oxides on the $NO_x$ reduction was examined with spherical- and wire-shape nanoparticles. Under identical condition, higher catalytic activity for $NO_x$ reduction was observed with Ag and Cu wires than with the spheres, while spherical- and wire-shape Ru exhibited similar $NO_x$ reduction efficiency to each other. Among the metal oxides examined, the best catalytic activity for $NO_x$ reduction was obtained with Ag wire, showing almost complete $NO_x$ removal at a temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. For Cu and Ru catalysts, considerable amount of NO was oxidized to $NO_2$, rather than reduced to $N_2$, leading to lower $NO_x$ reduction efficiency.
By using a gas-tight electrochemical cell, we can perform high-temperature coulometric titration and measure electronic transport properties to determine the elecronic defect structure of metal oxides. This technique reduces the time and expense required for conventional thermogravimetric measurements. The components of the gas-tight coulometric titration cell are an oxygen sensor, Pt/yttria stabilitized zirconia(YSZ)/Pt, and an encapsulated metal oxide sample. Based on cell design, both transport and thermodynamic measurements can be performed over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure ($pO_2=10^{-35}$ to 1 atm). This paper describes the high-temperature gas-tight electrochemical cells used to determine electronic defect structures and transport properties for pure and doped-oxide systems, such as YSZ, doped and pure ceria $(Ca-CeO_2 \;and\; CeO_2)$, copper oxides and copper-oxide-based ceramic superconductors, transition metal oxides, $SrFeCo_{0.5}O_x,\; and \;BaTiO_2$.

Solubility Products of metal oxides, such as Al2O3 and UO2 in KCl-LiCl eutectic composition was calculated by using an exact an exact thermodynamic. The values for Al2O3 ThO2 and UO2 were found to be 2.51$\times$10-27, 4.97$\times$10-15and 2.17$\times$10-12in mole per liter basis at 743 K, respectively. The correlation of theoretical values with those of experiment were in good agreement. It is worth to note that the exact cycle method was proved to be satisfactory in making predictions of solubillities and also solubility products of sparingly soluble metal oxides in an ionic salt system.
Transition-metal-oxide-incorporated hydrotalcites were prepared by hydrothermal reaction of their synthetic mixtures containing precursors of transition metal oxides and their properties of nitrogen dioxide adsorption was investigated. The dispersion of transition metal oxides on the hydrotalcites and the amount and the state of nitrogen dioxide adsorbed on them were examined by using XRD, SEM, XPS, nitrogen adsorption, a gravimetric adsorption system, FT-IR spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption techniques. Transition metal oxides were mainly incorporated on their surface and the incorporation of iron and nickel oxides to the hydrotalcites increased their adsorption amounts of nitrogen dioxide. The dispersion of iron oxide on the hydrotalcites was effective in increasing the amount of nitrogen dioxide adsorption, while too much amount of iron oxide incorporation reduced the amount of nitrogen dioxide adsorption due to masking of surface basic sites by agglomerated iron oxide. Although the incorporation of iron oxide to the hydrotalcites lowered the adsorption strength of nitrogen dioxide, the incorporation of it with a proper amount enhanced the amount of nitrogen dioxide adsorption and the stability against the hydrothermal treatment.
Metal is a material that has exerted a lot of influence on the development of human cultures, and has closely connected with our life from the past to the present. Types of metal we have used from the prehistoric times are varied, and iron relics take the largest percentage of metal relics excavated in our country. The biggest threat to the existence of iron relics ranging from excavated relics to the ones that are transmitted is the process of corrosion, and physical removal has been used the most for removing corroded oxides. For details for removal of corrosion oxides, this thesis aimed to research on the chemical corrosion oxides remover that protects parent material of iron relics but treats corrosion oxides only. For safe and effective removal of corrosion oxides of iron relics, this study was conducted aiming at finding the possibility of and optimized composition for removal of iron relics corrosion oxides by manufacturing new acid, alkaline and neutral oxides removers and changing their composition variously, exploring the possibility by applying the agents to modern relics. The results of this study are as follows: First, the acid solution removed only some part of corrosive substance oxidized on the surface of metal specimen. Second, the application of each of alkaline and neutral solution resulted in remaining black-colored corrosive substance, but it was removed when the quantity of the solution and the duration of application are increased. Third, All the three solutions did not cause any damage to parent material in the course of application, and showed the result that they are capable of removing unstable oxide layer while protecting parent material and stable corrosive layer as the solutions would be able to deal with situation by a relic only through the control of concentration of solution and duration of application.
There are a few thousand abandoned metal mines in South Korea. The abandoned mines cause several environmental problems including releasing acid mine drainage (AMD), which contain a very high acidity and heavy metal ions such as Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb, and As. Iron oxides can be formed from the AMD by increasing the solution pH and inducing precipitation. Current study focused on the formation of iron oxide in an AMD and used the oxide for adsorption of heavy metals. The heavy metal adsorbed iron oxide was separated with a superconducting magnet. The duration of iron oxide formation affected on the type of mineral and the degree of magnetization. The removal rate of heavy metal by the adsorption process with the formed iron oxide was highly dependent on the type of iron oxide and the solution pH. A high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system successfully separated the iron oxide and harmful heavy metals.
In this study, the intermediate layer in Pd-based hydrogen separation membrane was synthesized to minimize the surface roughness and defects using powder-type and sol-type metal oxides. The surface properties and gas permeation characteristics were analysed by SEM and $N_2$ gas permeation test. The coating layer composed of sol type metal oxides has smooth surface, especially the layer coated by $TiO_2$ sol has little pin holes, cracks and defects. The binary layer composed of powder type and sol type metal oxides has similar flux characteristics to a single sol type layer. The Pd-based composite membrane improved by the binary intermediate layer exhibited $0.32mol/m^2s$ of the hydrogen permeation flux with a selectivity ($H_2/N_2$) of ~10,890 at 672 K and a pressure difference of 1 bar.
