  • Nanoscale textured black silicon has attracted intensive attention due to its great potential as applications in multicrystalline silicon-based solar cells. It absorbs sunlight over a broad range of wavelengths but introduces large recombination centers, non-uniform doping into cell. In this study, we present a metal-assisted chemical etching technique plus alkaline etching process to fabricate nanoscale pyramid structures with optimized condition. To make the structures, silver nanoparticles-loaded mc-Si wafer was submerged into $H_2O_2/HF$ solution first for nanohole texturing the wafer and textured wafer etched again with KOH solution for making nanoscale pyramid structures. The average reflectivity (350-1050 nm) is about 8.42% with anti-reflection coating.

  • The colors of a tinted lens for a mixed color could be applied to a subtractive mixture's law, and the estimation of a tinted lens used the properties of optical absorptions and the color analysis. The optical absorption properties of Yellow(x)-Blue(1-x) depended on the yellow color in short wavelength below 500 nm, the absorption in the 550~650 nm wavelength regions depended on the blue color. The absorption band in the 550~650 nm wavelength regions was a peak for an ion of transition metal. The color properties of Yellow(x)-Blue(1-x) analysing by the $L^*a^*b^*$ of CIE system shifted to toward $+a^*$ decreasing x, it was formed of a pure color because of a low saturation existing in +0.6.

  • A large-area graphene sheet has been successfully grown on a copper-foil substrate by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for industrial use. To screen out unsatisfactory graphene films as quickly as possible, noninvasive optical characterization in reflection geometry is necessary. Based on the optical conductivity of graphene, developed by the single-electron tight-binding method, we have investigated the optical-reflectance contrast. Depending on the four independent control parameters of layer number, chemical potential, hopping energy, and temperature, the optical-reflectance contrast can change dramatically enough to reveal the quality of the grown graphene sheet.

  • We report an experimental investigation of the wavelength and polarization selectivity of a side-polished fiber in contact with a metal-clad planar waveguide. The influences of the structural parameters of the planar waveguide, including refractive index of the superstrate and metal thickness, on the optical transmission characteristics of the device were measured and explained. The conditions for high wavelength and polarization selectivity wore predicted and demonstrated experimentally.

  • We report theoretical investigation on the polarization selective coupling characteristics of a side-polished fiber directional coupler with a thin metal interlayer. Based on normal mode theory the coupling properties of the device under various structural conditions are analyzed. It is shown that the coupling strength between TE modes weakens rapidly with increase or metal interlayer thickness, whereas that between TM modes becomes stronger. The design conditions of the polarization splitter using the coupler to achieve high extinction ratio and low insertion loss are presented.

  • This study has been focused on properties of mirror surface grinding technology by ELID(Electrolytic In-process Dressing) for metal matrix ceramic composites using in high precision mirror for optics. The experimental studies have been carried out to get mirror surface by grinding for composites, Al-SiC, Al-graphite and Mg-SiC. Grinding process is carried out with varying abrasive mesh type, depth of cut and feed rate using diamond wheel. The machining result of the surface roughness and condition of ground surface, have been analyzed by use of surface roughness tester and SEM measurement system. ELID grinding technology could be applied successfully for the mirror-surface manufacturing processes in spite of ductility of metal matrix material. As the results of experiments, surface roughness of Al-SiC(45 wt%) has been the most superior in these experimental work-pieces as 0.021 ${\mu}m$ Ra.

  • We report theoretical and experimental results for the wavelength and polarization selectivity of a fiber-to-planar waveguide coupler made of a side polished single mode fiber covered with a planer waveguide incorporating a thin metal film. A simple but exact approach to obtain the modal properties of multilayer planar waveguide with a thin metal film is described. The device was modeled into equivalent 1 dimensional structure and its behaviour was analyzed based on coupled mode theory. The effects of metal film thickness and refractive index of superstrate on the device properties were measured and explained.

  • Adding tunability to biological light emitters offers an unprecedented technique in biological sensing and imaging. Here, we report a tunable, lithographic-free, planar, and ultrathin metal-insulator-metal (MIM) resonator capable of tuning the optical properties solely by a silk/sodium fluorescein hydrogel layer, a biocompatible light emitter. In water, the volume of the resonator was expanded by swelling, and then the resonant mode could be shifted. Simulations predicted the red-shifted resonance peak in transmission when the MIM was swollen in water. The red-shift could be attributed to the increase in the thickness of the silk hydrogel layer due to the absorbed water. The shift of the resonance could affect the fluorescence of the dye in the silk hydrogel layer.
