Polymers are the dominant material for fabrication of denture bases. However, resin base can't fufill the patients' satisfactions completely and solve the pronunciation problem and prevent the denture fracture. In spite of many advantages, metal denture bases do not widespread in clinical practice. The main reasons are the difficulties in fabrication and additional time and cost, inability to rebase such prostheses. The use of the metal base can be one of options in complete denture treatments. This study helps, through reveiwing previous reports and literature about the metal base, metal base to be useful in the clinical application by recommend the materials, indications and advantage/disadvantage of the metal base and introduce variable designs. The clinical application of the metal base have many advantages, but the dentists have to select cases carefully and apply designs according to patient's various conditions. In conclusion, the use of the metal base can't alternate treatment of inadequate conventional complete denture. Adequate complete denture is very important for the treatment of the metal base complete denture.
Since the late 1930s, acrylic resins have been the materials of choice for the fabrication of complete denture bases. It has excellent esthetic properties, adequate strength, low water sorption, and low solubility. But acrylic resin has disadvantage of processing shrinkage that reduces denture retention and accuracy of denture occlusion. Metals also have been used in denture base material. Metals used in denture bases display excellent strength and dimensional stability. The major disadvantages associated with metal denture bases include increased cost, difficulty in fabrication, compromised esthetic qualities, and inability to re-base. The purpose of this study is to compare the artificial tooth movements of complete dentures with resin bases and metal bases after curing, deflasking, polishing immersion in water for 1 week and 4 weeks. Twenty-four maxillary complete resin denture bases with artificial teeth were fabricated. Twelve of them were resin based and other twelve of them were metal based. Fine crosses were marked on the incisal edges of right central incisors and distobuccal cusps of be second molars. Measurements were done for the changes of distances of reference points at the time of wax denture, after deflasking after decasting after polishing after immersion in water for 1 week and 4 weeks Meaurements were done to the accuracy of 0.001mm with a measuring microscope. The results were as follows : 1. Metal base showed significantly less tooth movement than resin base after curing and decasting (p<0.01). 2. Metal base showed significantly less tooth movement than resin base after polishing (p<0.01). 3. After immersion in water for 1 week and 4 weeks, metal base showed less movement than resin base. Difference was significant for anterior-posterior distances (p<0.01), but not significant for molar-to-molar distance (p>0.01). 4. 1 week and 4 weeks of immersion failed to compensate the initial processing shrinkage of metal and resin bases (p>0.01).
A common site of fracture in maxillary complete denture is on the anteroposterior midline that coincides with the notch for relief of the labial frenum. Various approaches to reduce the incidence of this type of fracture have been suggested. The most widely used technique is the reinforcement of acrylic resin denture base with several solid metal forms. But few comparative studies on the efficacy of metal reinforcements have been reported. This study was conducted to compare reinforcing effects of commonly available metal reinforcements, which include wire, metal mesh embedded in the denture base and metal plate affixed to the impression surface of denture base by silicoating technique. This was load on the posterior. The strain gauges were oriented perpendicular to the anteroposterior midline of maxillary polished denture surface at one labial and the four palatal sites Non-renforced denture was used as control. The results were as follows : 1. In the non-reinforced denture group, only tensile strains on the palatal polished surface were observed. The tensile strains decreased in the order of incisive papilla, posterior denture border area, mid palatal area and rugae area. Compressive strain was observed on the labial polished surface. 2. As compared with the non-reinforced denture group, the metal plate or the metal mesh reinforced denture groups showed reduced palatal tensile strains, and the metal mesh reinforcement had a better reinforcing effect than the metal plate. But both reinforced denture groups showed no difference in the amount of compressive strain on the labial polished surface when compared to the non-reinforced denture group. 3. The metal wire positioned just above the labial notch decreased the compressive strain on the labial polished surface. But the presence of metal wires in the palatal polished surface caused increase in tensile strains in the area.
This is a research for thickness change of denture base according to the shape of sprue & investment position of denture base in flask when injecting polyamid base resin for flexible partial denture as a part of study for Valplast among the flexible partial denture with a nylon base. It has been introduced several kinds of flexible partial denture product with a nylon base, but Valplast is the most widely used product among them. Valplast has been the most generally used material today since developed in 1950s in the United States as a material for flexible partial denture. Valplast is much more aesthetic than general metal-acrylic partial denture due to its translucent pink color and biocompatibility in terms of material characteristic. It keeps its flexibility for a long time after production, imposes a less burden on the teeth used as abutment, and it can be easily insert and remove due to its particular suppleness. Moreover, it is felt like real teeth more than metal-acrylic partial denture when being put in and takes alveolar bone under good protection since it receives occlusal force equally under the denture base. The most outstanding feature of Valplast is flexibility. The extent of its flexibility is determined by width & thickness of denture base. Considering general working procedure of Valplast, it can be seen that the thickness of denture base formed out of wax is increasing by the pressure while injecting resin. This research is to decide and test on the thickness increasing of Valplast by injecting pressure and the hypothesis upon that and is to prepare the basis estimating the increasing extent of thickness of denture base on the basis of the test result. In this test, it is expected occlusal malposition & thickness increasing of denture base by injecting pressure according to 4 kinds of test data which are to select 3 types of sprue method settling the forefront position at which the test material of fixed standard can be invested and to position the test material at the rearmost part keeping the minimum distance to set sprue. For 4 kinds of injecting test by investment position & sprue type, 20 test materials, 5 for each test were produced and a pressure of 1,180Kg was given with automatic injector of air cylinder type. The results are as follows: 1. For the amount of thickness increasing of denture base by investment position, the thickness of front investment is less increasing than the one of rear investment. 2. For the amount of thickness increasing of denture base by sprue type, the thickness of straight decompression sprue type which can absorb the injecting pressure after injecting polyamide base resin is less increasing than the other sprue types.
Statement of problem. Acrylic resin is most commonly used for denture bases. However, acrylic resin has week points of volumetric shrinkage during polymerization that reduces denture fit. The expandability of POSS (Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane) containing polymer could be expected to reduce the polymerization shrinkage of denture bases and would increase the adaptability of the denture to the tissue. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the dimensional stability in the conventional acrylic resin base, POSS-containing acrylic resin base, and metal bases. Materials and methods. Thirty six maxillary edentulous casts and dentures of different base were fabricated. Tooth movement and tissue contour change of denture after processing (resin curing, deflasking, decasting and finishing without polishing) and immersion in artificial saliva at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 week and 4 weeks were measured using digital measuring microscope and threedimensional laser scanner. Results. The results were as follows: 1. The conventional resin group showed significant (p<0.01) dimensional change throughout the procedure (processing and immersion in artificial saliva). 2. After processing, the metal group and POSS resin group showed lower linear and 3-dimensional change than conventional resin group (p<0.01). 3. There was no statistically significant linear and 3-dimensional change after immersion for 1 week and 4 weeks in metal and POSS resin group. 4. In all groups, the midline and alveolar ridge crest area presented smaller 3-dimensional change compared with vestibule and posterior palatal seal area after processing and soaking in artificial saliva for 1 week and 4 weeks (p<0.01). Conclusion. In this study, a reinforced acrylic-based resin with POSS showed good dimensional stability.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the color stability, water sorption and cytotoxicity of thermoplastic acrylic resin for the non-metal clasp dentures to those of thermoplastic polyamide and conventional heat-polymerized denture base resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three types of denture base resin, which are conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Paladent 20), thermoplastic polyamide resin (Bio Tone), thermoplastic acrylic resin (Acrytone) were used as materials for this study. One hundred five specimens were fabricated. For the color stability test, specimens were immersed in the coffee and green tee for 1 and 8 weeks. Color change was measured by spectrometer. Water sorption was tested after 1 and 8 weeks immersion in the water. For the test of cytotoxicity, cell viability assay was measured and cell attachment was analyzed by FE-SEM. RESULTS. All types of denture base resin showed color changes after 1 and 8 weeks immersion. However, there was no significant difference between denture base resins. All specimens showed significant color changes in the coffee than green tee. In water sorption test, thermoplastic acrylic resin showed lower values than conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resin and thermoplastic polyamide resin. Three types of denture base showed low cytotoxicity in cell viability assay. Thermoplastic acrylic resin showed the similar cell attachment but more stable attachment than conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resin. CONCLUSION. Thermoplastic acrylic resin for the non-metal clasp denture showed acceptable color stability, water sorption and cytotoxicity. To verify the long stability in the mouth, additional in vitro studies are needed.
The need for repairing removable dentures has grown as the population had aged. The direct methods allow existing dentures to be repaired without interrupting their use. However, if patient compliance is low, direct methods may be challenging. Moreover, attaching an artificial tooth to a metal base is a complicated procedure because it necessitates casting a retentive element and soldering it to a metal base. This clinical report describes how to add an artificial tooth to a metal base, reline denture bases, and reestablish occlusion on relined removable dentures using indirect methods. Existing removable dentures were successfully repaired and their service life was efficiently extended using the methods described.
The base of a metal base denture that is made of acrylic resin base and metal in lined by soft liner named silicon rubber and its merits are as follows. 1. It has a good retention and fastness. 2. It has a good comfort and stability. 3. It is easy to mix various kinds of base materials. 4. It is easy to repair. 5. The pressure of bone and mucosal tissue is decreased and bite force is dispersed.
For the successful treatment of complete denture, obtaining a good retention is essential. There are lots of factors affecting denture retention. Denture material, one of those factors affecting denture retention, was the subject of this study, and internal surface treatment also considered for the method of enhancing denture retention. Two resin(Lucitone $199^{(R)}$(heat cured resin) Vertex $CP^{(R)}$(self cured resin)) and two metal($Biosil^{(R)}$(Co-Cr alloy), $Vitallium^{(R)}$(Co-Cr alloy)) denture base materials were used for making test denture base. Newly developed device was used for measuring denture retention. After the retention was measured. We treated internal surface of test denture base with $50{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ powder, under 90psi, for 1 minute. Then the retention was measured again. The result was analyzed with K-S test, one-way ANOVA test and independent t-test to deter mine the significant differences as the 95% level of confidence. The results are as follows : In cases of without internal surface treatment, the retention was increased in order of $Vitallium^{(R)},\;Biosil^{(R)},\;Vertex CP^{(R)}$ and Lucitone $199^{(R)}$. Except between Vertex $CP^{(R)}$ and $Biosil^{(R)}$, retention of the other materials was significantly different (p<0.05). After the treatment of internal surface, the retention was increased in order of $Vitallium^{(R)},\;Biosil^{(R)},\;Lucno\;199^{(R)},\;Vertex\;CP^{(R)}$. Except between Lucitone $199^{(R)}$ and Vertex $CP^{(R)}$, $Vitallium^{(R)}$ and $Biosil^{(R)}$ the retention of remaining groups was significantly different each other (p<0.05). In the matter of each material, after the internal surface treatment the retention was increased with Vertex $CP^{(R)},\;Biosil^{(R)}\;and\;Vitallium^{(R)}$ and the value of differences were statistically significant. When we compare the retention of resin and metal denture base, the retention of both denture bases increased significantly with internal surface treatment, and resin denture base showed better retention. As the results show, selecting denture base material could be an important choice of complete denture treatment. To increase denture retention, internal surface treatment can be considered as a possible method.
The Purpose of this study was to investigate material differences in stress transmission among various artificial teeth and denture base materials. For this study, a two-dimensional finite element model and a two-dimensional photoelastic model of a mandible with complete denture were made. A resin tooth and a porcelain tooth were used as artificial teeth, and a resin base, a metal lined base, and a soft-liner lined base were used as denture bases. An occlusal load was applied and principal stresses generated in the supporting tissues were compared. To test the impact stress transmission, strain gauge attached to the denture base specimens made of the different materials were made in thick and thin groups. Voltage outputs from hitting the specimen with a steel ball were compared. The results were as follows : 1. In FEM, increasing the mucosal thickness reduced the maximum principal stresses in the supporting tissues, but altering the tooth materials and the base materials induced no difference in the stresses. 2. In photoelastic model study, no difference in fringe order among the specimens were observed, but the thick mucosa group and the soft-liner lined group revealed a more uniform distribution of the load. 3. In strain measuring, the impact force transmission was highest in the soft-liner lined group, and was the lowest in the metal lined group(p<0.01). 4. In the thin group using the resin base, the porcelain tooth showed higher impact stress transmission than the resin tooth(p<0.01), but no difference was observed between them in the thick group. In the soft-liner lined group, the porcelain tooth showed higher impact stress transmission than the resin tooth(p<0.01), but no difference was observed between them in the metal lined group. 5. The thick group showed lower impact stress transmission than the thin group(p<0.01).
