A series of three bench-scale experiments was performed to investigate the conversion of sodium metal to sodium chloride via reactions with non-metal and metal chlorides. Specifically, batches of molten sodium metal were separately contacted with ammonium chloride and ferrous chloride to form sodium chloride in both cases along with iron in the latter case. Additional ferrous chloride was added to two of the three batches to form low melting point consolidated mixtures of sodium chloride and ferrous chloride, whereas consolidation of a sodium-chloride product was performed in a separate batch. Samples of the products were characterized via X-ray diffraction to identify attendant compounds. The reaction of sodium metal with metered ammonium chloride particulate feeds proceeded without reaction excursions and produced pure colorless sodium chloride. The reaction of sodium metal with ferrous chloride yielded occasional reaction excursions as evidenced by temperature spikes and fuming ferrous chloride, producing a dark salt-metal mixture. This investigation into a method for controlled conversion of sodium metal to sodium chloride is particularly applicable to sodium containing elevated levels of radioactivity-including bond sodium from nuclear fuels-in remote-handled inert-atmosphere environments.
The thermal degradation of ABS/PC/triphenyl phosphate compounds in the presence of transition metal chloride catalysts has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The reaction of transition metal chloride catalysts (cobalt chloride, ferric chloride, nickel chloride and zinc chloride) and ABS/PC/triphenyl phosphate compounds has been found to occur during the thermal degradation of the compounds. In a nitrogen atmosphere, char formation is observed, and $3\~13\%$of the reaction product is non-volatile at $600^{circ}$. The resulting enhancement of char formation in a nitrogen atmosphere has been explained as a catalytic crosslinking effect of transition metal chloride catalysts. On the other hand, transition metal chloride catalyzed char formation of ABS/PC/triphenyl phosphate compounds in air was unsuccessful due to the oxidative degradation of the char at a higher temperature.

The aim of this review is to communicate some essential knowledge of the underlying mechanism of the corrosion of structural containment alloys during molten salt reactor operation in the context of prospective online monitoring in future MSR installations. The formation of metal halide species and the progression of their concentration in the molten salt do reflect containment corrosion, tracing the depletion of alloying metals at the alloy salt interface will assure safe conditions during reactor operation. Even though the progress of alloying metal halides concentrations in the molten salt do strongly understate actual corrosion rates, their prospective 1st order kinetics followed by near-linearly increase is attributed to homogeneous matrix corrosion. The service life of the structural containment alloy is derived from homogeneous matrix corrosion and near-surface void formation but less so from intergranular cracking (IGC) and pitting corrosion. Online monitoring of corrosion species is of particular interest for molten chloride systems since besides the expected formation of chromium chloride species CrCl2 and CrCl3, other metal chloride species such as FeCl2, FeCl3, MoCl2, MnCl2 and NiCl2 will form, depending on the selected structural alloy. The metal chloride concentrations should follow, after an incubation period of about 10,000 hours, a linear projection with a positive slope and a steady increase of < 1 ppm per day. During the incubation period, metal concentration show 1st order kinetics and increasing linearly with time1/2. Ideally, a linear increase reflects homogeneous matrix corrosion, while a sharp increase in the metal chloride concentration could set a warning flag for potential material failure within the projected service life, e.g. as result of intergranular cracking or pitting corrosion. Continuous monitoring of metal chloride concentrations can therefore provide direct information about the mechanism of the ongoing corrosion scenario and offer valuable information for a timely warning of prospective material failure.
The stress corrosion cracking(SCC) and hydrogen embrittlement cracking(HEC) characteristics of a weathering steel weldment were investigated in aerated acid-chloride solution. The electrochemical properties of weldment were investigated by polarization test and galvanic corrosion test. Weathering steel did not show passive behavior in the acid-chloride solution. Galvanic corrosion between the weld metal and the base metal was not observed because the base metal was anodic to the weld metal. The slow-strain-rate tests(SSRT0 were conducted at a constant strain rate o 7.87×{TEX}$10^{-7}${/TEX}/s at corrosion potential, and at potentiostatically controlled anodic and cathodic potentials. The weldment of weathering steel was susceptible to both anodic dissolution SCC and hydrogen evolution HEC.
The synthesis of phospholipid and the composition of fatty acid in B. subtills treated with copper chloride (10 ppm), manganese chloride (100 ppm), and nickel chloride (50 ppm) during the culture were analyzed to compare with the control. The levels of growth, total lipid, phosphatidylethanolamine(PE), phosphatidylcholine(PC), phosphatidylglycerol(PG), and cardiolipin(CL) in B. subtilis treated with copper chloride were decreased predominantly. But, the biosynthesis of phosphatidylinositol(PI) was not affected by the metal compounds. The major fatty acids utilized for the formation of phospholipid were palmitic acid(average 19.00%) and stearic acid(average 9.88%) in the control. In the copper chloride treatment, however, palmitic acid (average 17.35%) and oleic acid(average 15.99%) made use of the major fatty acid during the biosynthesis of phospholipids. It was showed that oleic acid(average 17.87%) and stearic acid (average 13.78%) in thee manganese chloride treatment, and palmitic acid(average 15.00%) and myristic acid(average 14.24%) in the nickel chloride treatment were utilized.

The papers in preserved books and archives experience aging which was affected by a variety of factors. Thus, the studies concerning impacts of those factors on paper aging are required. In this research, a simulation of a short-time accelerated paper aging was conducted in order to examine the effects of acid and metals (alum, copper (II) sulfate, copper (II) chloride, and iron (III) chloride) on the natural paper aging for a long time. As a result of experiments, it is found that both acid and metals have impacts on paper aging. Alum resulted in the significant decrease of pH, brightness, folding endurance, and viscosity of paper. Both copper (II) chloride and iron (III) chloride also resulted in the decrease of brightness, folding endurance, and viscosity of paper. In more detail, paper aging by iron (III) chloride showed much more significant than that by copper (II) chloride. The paper aging in case of copper (II) sulfate coexisting sulfate ion, where metal absorbed moisture was higher than in case of paper treated only by alum. This result indicated that metal catalyzes paper aging by acid. Based on these results, it was revealed that both alum and metal are the major factors in paper aging. In particular, paper aging was far more accelerated in case when acid and metals existed in paper at the same time.

The effects of potassium chromate (500ppm/500ppm), potassium dichromate (500ppm/500ppm), cobalt chloride (100ppm/10ppm), methylmercuric chloride (100ppm/10ppm) on the biosynthesis of phospholipid and their composition of fatty acids in E.coli and B.subtilis were analyzed. The contents of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylglycerol, cardiolipin and total lipids in treatment with metal compounds were lower to compare with the control. The major fatty acid utilized for biosynthesis of phospholipid was palmitic acid in control of E.coli and B.subtilis. However, in treatment with metal compounds, changes of fatty acid composition utilized for phospholipid formation were as follows. In E.coli major fatty acids were palimitic acid (ave. 26.26%) and cis-vaccenic acid (ave. 10.94%) in treatment with potassium chromate, palmitic acid (ave. 31.41%/31.42%) and stearic acid (ave. 17.92%/19.41%) in treatment with potassium dichromate and cobalt chloride. And in treatment with raethylmercuric chloride, palmitic acid (ave. 26.66%), stearic acid (ave. 15.50%) and cis-vaccenic acid (ave. 20.59%) were used in phospholipid formation. In B.subtilis, the major fatty acid was palmitoleic acid (ave. 15.29% /10.22%) in treatment with potassium chromate and cobalt chloride, and stearic acid (ave. 16.01%) in treatment with potassium dichromate. On the other hand, cis-vaccenic acid (ave. 9.09%), palmitic acid (ave. 17.23%), stearic acid (ave. 6.66%), myristic acid (ave. 6.34%) and lauric acid (ave. 4.75%) were analyzed into major fatty acids in treatment with methylmercuric chloride. As shown in results, specific fatty acid pattern was came out in treatment with metal compounds according to bacteria and treatments.
Mixed matrix membranes have gained significant recognition in the wastewater treatment industry for their effectiveness in removing dyes, proteins, and heavy metals from water sources. Researchers have developed an innovative technique to enhance properties of these membranes by incorporating amine-functionalized carbon nanotubes into the polymer matrix. This approach introduces amine functional groups onto the membrane surface, which are then modified with trimesoyl chloride and cyanuric chloride. The modified membranes are characterized by XPS to confirm successful bonding of amines with the trimesoyl chloride and cyanuric chloride. The surface charge of the modified membrane also plays a role in the modification process; the membrane modified with trimesoyl chloride has a negative surface charge, while the one modified with cyanuric chloride has a more positive charge. At the same acidic pH, the positive or negative charge of the mixed matrix membranes assists in enhancing the rejection of heavy metals. This results in improved antifouling properties for both modified membranes. The heavy metal rejection for all modified membranes is higher than for unmodified membranes, due to both adsorption and complexation abilities of the functional groups on the membrane surface with heavy metal ions. As the membrane surface functionalities increase through modification, the separation due to complexation also increases. The bulk morphology of the membrane remains unchanged, while roughness slightly increases due to the surface treatment.
Extracts of Panax ginseng root significantly induced tolerance of Fusarium oxysporum to heavy metal, mecury, as the fungal mycelial growth was less inhibited by mercury chloride on potato dextrose medium(PDA) amended with ginseng root than on the PDA with no ginseng amendment. The most favorable concentration of ginseng root powder in detoxification of mercury chloride was 1%. The induced tolerance of F. oxysporum to mercury chloride appeared to be rather due to absorption of ginseng components, and was not related to stimulation of mycelial growth of the fungus per so by ginseng treatment. Ginseng components responsible for inducing tolerance of the fungus to mercury were involved in the water fraction of the ginseng root extract, although the water fraction had no effect on enhancement of the mycelial growth on the medium without mercury chloride. The hexane fraction of ginseng root extract, by which the mycelial growth was stimulated, was not related to the inducement of the tolerance to mercury chloride. However, more tolerance to mercury chloride was noted in PDA with both the water and hexane fractions combined than with either of the two fractions. Six-year-old ginseng roots were more effective in detoxification of mercury chloride than 4-year-old ginsng roots, and American ginseng (P quinquifolium) had no or little effect on inducing tolerance of the fungus to mercury chloride. This method may be used to screen other natural materials for test in the detoxification of mercury chloride.
