Metal is a material that has exerted a lot of influence on the development of human cultures, and has closely connected with our life from the past to the present. Types of metal we have used from the prehistoric times are varied, and iron relics take the largest percentage of metal relics excavated in our country. The biggest threat to the existence of iron relics ranging from excavated relics to the ones that are transmitted is the process of corrosion, and physical removal has been used the most for removing corroded oxides. For details for removal of corrosion oxides, this thesis aimed to research on the chemical corrosion oxides remover that protects parent material of iron relics but treats corrosion oxides only. For safe and effective removal of corrosion oxides of iron relics, this study was conducted aiming at finding the possibility of and optimized composition for removal of iron relics corrosion oxides by manufacturing new acid, alkaline and neutral oxides removers and changing their composition variously, exploring the possibility by applying the agents to modern relics. The results of this study are as follows: First, the acid solution removed only some part of corrosive substance oxidized on the surface of metal specimen. Second, the application of each of alkaline and neutral solution resulted in remaining black-colored corrosive substance, but it was removed when the quantity of the solution and the duration of application are increased. Third, All the three solutions did not cause any damage to parent material in the course of application, and showed the result that they are capable of removing unstable oxide layer while protecting parent material and stable corrosive layer as the solutions would be able to deal with situation by a relic only through the control of concentration of solution and duration of application.
Scientific studies of conservation techniques and materials in Korea have experienced fast development since international practice and academic knowledge have been introduced to Korea from Japan, France, Germany, and etc from the late 1960s. In recent years, it has been observed that the academic standard of research and the level knowledge of the field in Korea at present are far advanced to compete with many countries. However, many Korean cases still have displayed that the standard and the quality of conservation practice need to be improved. This research examined several cases of derelict restoration of metal relics executed by non-conservators and the effects of their ignorant use of irreversible materials on the valuable objects. The purpose of the study is to display the problem of such treatments and to suggest a need of framework to prevent the loss of original form from them. Metal Buddha statue (Cosmic Buddha) in Borim Temple (National Treasure No. 117), which was conserved by an unexperienced non-conservator, has suffered from a serious problem of corrosion because of the use of destructive material, iron chloride. Another case for metal Buddha statue in Dopian Temple (National Treasure No. 63) displays a representative example of using irreversible materials, Cashew and such ignorant application made a later conservation treatment so difficult in removing the material from the surface of the statue. In conclusion, the research argued that the understanding of materials used in the objects, and the value of relics is important, and pre-experiments before applying conservation materials to a valuable heritage are essential in the conservation treatment.
Urethane coating agent was made up in order to prevent corrosion on metal relics. This urethane coating agent was designed to solve problems linked to gloss and discoloration caused by existing acrylic coating agent which is mainly applied to metal relics. For the purpose, the urethane coating agent was made up which has lower gloss and slight color change. This coating agent formed thinner coating layer with excellent adhesion compared to the existing agent and has outstanding resistance to the surface oxidization of metal relics and water repellent on the surface. In addition, the agent is considered a stable coating agent replacing current acrylic coating agent with showing easy dissolution in organic solvents such as acetone, toluene and xylene with excellent result in reversible reaction.
A museum's collections is fundamental factors to construct important activity of museum performing a role as cultural facility for learning, education and research. Therefore, conservation of collections through appropriate environments is previously established in step of planing a museum. Hereby, the purpose of this study is to set up the classification of collections and suggest a useful guidance of the storage division in a domestic museum. The results of this study are as follows. First, the main factors of deterioration are temperature and relative humidity in a museum storage, so classification of collections should be set up according to the objective standards of these factors. Second, the classification of collections can be performed as follow: the group for nonorganic materials subdivide metal, chinaware, earthenware, and jade stone, the group for organic materials subdivide leather hair paper fabric, bone horn shell mound and wood herbage and the group for composed materials. Third, for storage division of a domestic museum, basically has to consider that it is reasonable to plan $4{\sim}5$ storages in metal, jade stone, chinaware earthenware, and organic materials of $1{\sim}2$ units in case of a serial of history like archaeological, antique museum. And in case of folk relics of modern and contemporary arts are collected, it is reasonable to plan over 5 storages add composed materials to foregoing classification.
Investigation into iron manufacture relics has been active since 1970s, especially accelerated in 1990s across the country. Consideration of the importance of production site relics has lately attracted attention to iron manufacture relics. Methodological studies of the investigation into iron manufacture relics, however, were less made compared with those of the investigation into tomb, dwelling, or swampy place relics. It is because the process of iron manufacture is too complicated to understand and also requires professional knowledge of metal engineering. With the recognition of these problems this research is to form an opinion about how to excavate, to rearrange and classify, and to examine iron manufacture relics, based upon the understanding of the nature of iron, iron production process, and metal engineering features of related relics like slag, iron lumps and so on. This research classifies iron manufacture relics into seven types according to the production process; mining, smelting, refining, tempering, melting, steelmaking, and the others. Then it arranges methods to survey in each stage of field study, trial digging, and excavation. It also explains how to classify and examine excavated relics, what field of natural science to be used to know the features of relics, and what efforts have been made to reconstruct a furnace and what their problems were, making the best use of examples, drawings, and photos. It comes to the conclusion, in spite of the lack of in-depth discussion on application and development of various investigation methods, that iron manufacture relics can be classified according to the production process, that natural sciences should be applied to get comprehensive understanding of relics as well as archeological knowledge, and that efforts to reconstruct a furnace should be continued from the aspect of experimental archeology.
In the course of examining the metallic structure of Iron chisel and Iron arrowhead, a relics of the 16th or 17th of Chosun Dynasty unearthed at near Gangsun-tower, Chengpyeong temple, we collected un-eroded samples from the relics and looked into the metallic structure through mounting, grinding and polishing, and etching, while analyzing non-metallic inclusion via SEM and EDS. The research metallic structure and SEM-SDS analysis, found that Iron chisel and Iron arrowhead had been produced from sponge iron close to pure Iron made by solid low heat reducing and then increased in rate of carbon by carburizing, It also found that Iron chisel had been hardened through the repetitive process of quench hardening and heat treatment, after being increased in amount of carbon to a certain level. Up to now, there have been a number of studies in the domestic academia which were made primarily of the structure of metallic relics of three countries the period or tile era before that. Although this research was limited in type and number of the relics, it turned out to be Interesting in that it revealed the 16thor 17th century way of processing iron, even in fragments. It is thought to be fruitful that we found iron had been made even in the Chosun Dynasty from sponge iron. It is recommended that researches be made on the relics later to be excavated and originally made in $Kory\breve{o}$ or Chosun Dynasty, because they are important in history of metal technology.
Ancient metal objects with inlaid designs were mainly decorated using the wire inlay technique in which "V"- or "U"-shaped grooves were cut in a metal object and then filled with gold or silver. Previous studies on ancient metal objects featuring wire inlay generally attempted to ascertain the inlay techniques applied by examining photomicroscopes acquired during conservation treatment. However, they had limitations when examining wire inlay technique to the minute details. Wire inlay technique can be better investigated by enlarging X-ray films of relics using stereoscopic microscopy under transmitted light. The core processes of the wire inlay technique involve cutting grooves using a chisel and creating the inlay wires, but researchers hold varying opinions about the two processes. This study analyzed the entirety of the materials able to shed light on the main processes applied in Baekje wire inlay by examining X-ray films of relics through stereoscopic microscopy. This exhaustive research revealed that two types of techniques were used for wire inlay during the Baekje period. One is a plastic process of engraving dotted lines using a chisel and is found mostly in objects from the Cheonan and Gongju areas. The other is a cutting process that incises fine lines and was used mostly in relics from the Osan, Seosan, and Wanju areas. It is likely that the Baekje wire inlay techniques feature regional differences because the respective techniques were used or introduced by different groups of people.
In the Geumseongsan Tumulus of the Uiseong area where the Jomunguk was existed in the Three Han Period, many relics such as metal craft ornaments and Uiseong-style earthernware were excavated. However, it is hard to find cases where the excavated relics were used to develop cultural products. In this study, symbolic relics which can express the culture of Uiseong Jomunguk were selected from excavated relics. Then, the basic design that can be applied to various cultural products were derived from symbolic relics. In order to select symbolic relics, the formative characteristics of the metal craft relics excavated from the Tablili Tumulus and the Dali Tumulus were examined. As a result, a gilt-bronze crown excavated from the Tablili Tumulus was selected as a symbolic relics. And then the basic desin was derived from the gilt-bronze crown. The basic design is expressed in the form of birds based on the bird's feather shape at the edge of the standing ornaments and the record of the Bongdae(鳳臺), the phoenix's habitat. And the application design that changed the expression of the birds' face was presented. The earthenware excavated from the Uiseong area was designed as a soil pot and applied various indoor air purification plants. The result of this study, which reinterprets and reconstructs the historical and cultural resources of the region in accordance with the modern sense, can be used as useful data for the development of cultural products of Jomunguk. Furthermore, if the design derived from the Jomunguk relics is used as a representative symbol of the area, it will be possible to derive an image of a differentiated region from other regions. Finally, it is expected that the result of this study will be a chance to re-evaluate the value of the historical and cultural resources in the region.
The engraved line expression in metal crafts is a detailed technique of carving or decorating metal surfaces. This technique engraves a line using a tool on the surface of a metal craft. This technique was used extensively in articles made of various metal materials during the Goryeo Dynasty, and the range of patterns that could be expressed and the width of users was wide. In this paper, based on relics and literature, the concept of line representation of this engraving technique used in the metal crafts of the Goryeo Dynasty and the perceptions and terms of the Goryeo Dynasty were examined. In addition, the users engaged in this craft and the specific patterns and patterns of decoration were reviewed. Through these means, it was possible to confirm various aspects of a technique that was thought previously to involve just simple expression of lines using tools. In addition, through the literature, Geumseokmun Gate, and relics currently being transmitted, it was possible to confirm the utilization patterns of techniques used in various types of objects. Various uses have led to the combination with other metal craft techniques that were popular at the time, and while utilizing unique characteristics of the techniques, this maximized the molding of various patterns. In the meantime, it is true that the intaglio technique in metal crafts has not received much attention compared to the decoration techniques of other metal crafts, such as inlay, embossing, and openwork techniques in which decorative effects are maximized due to the recognition that the technique was used so widely in relics. However, the universality of the technique is premised on its wide use across all eras. As such, it was used in metal craft relics that reflect the various cultural characteristics of Korea and various cultural aspects that are currently passed down. On the one hand, technology has been passed down as a form of intangible heritage that embodies a longstanding craft culture which continues to the present in the fields of sculpture and intangible cultural properties. As such, the universality of Seongak contains many cultural meanings. In addition, the uniqueness of the technique is distinct, and it is deeply related to Goryeo, who was in charge of the use of technology and craftsmanship of the Joseon Dynasty and the metal craft technology that is currently handed down. I think research on future techniques should be continued in depth.

This research is about the reproduction of Baekje's armor-lamellar made for the Hanseong Baekje Museum exhibition. The purpose of the research are as follows. First, to categorize Baekje armor by type based on ancient documents and the excavated relics. Second, to reproduce categorized armor that provide a visual work for use in diverse areas. Baekje armor can be examined through the ancient records and several excavated relics. The results of the research are as follows. First, Baekje armor can be categorized into four types by material: 1) brass 2) iron 3) leather 4) bone. The can also be categorized into three types by finishing a) Hyeongnyubongnyun type (the leather skin interweaves with the lamellar armor method) b) Hyeokpobongnyun type (the method which wraps around the edges of leather skin) c) leather cloth added to clothe type. Second, we reproduced metal armor, iron armor and leather armor using brass, iron and leather (but not bone). Each type of armor were made life-size for exhibition purposes. We used Hyeongnyubongnyun method, Hyeokpobongnyung method and leather cloth; in addition, reproductions were made based on the Yangdang method that connected the front and the back from both sides of the shoulders so it can be open and close at the side part.
