  • In various fields, ISO/IEC 11179-based MDR (Metadata Registry) systems have been developed. However, the current systems do not observe the standard, so inconsistency issue between metadata arises. Most of all, there exist several problems because ISO/IEC 11179 provides no standardized access method. SQL/MDR has been suggested to resolve those problems. SQL/MDR supports search operations, but it does not provide operations for vaild building and safe access for MDR. This paper, in the aforementioned issues, suggests MCL(Metadata Control Language) to guarantee safe and easy access control. MCL offers predefined roles and authority of user groups defined in ISO/IEC 11179 Part 6, and users are assigned to a proper user group. With such a way, MCL increases usability and security.

  • This study analyzed the current condition of authority control, introduced the MADS(Metadata Authority Description Schema) for authority data. MADS supports encoding an authority description for a agent(person, organization), event, term(topic, temporal entity, genre, geographic entity, hierarchical geographic entity, occupation) and defines main elements, subelements, and attributes using the XML schema language. Lastly, using the MADS's characteristics, this study proposed the effective use plans of interoperability of authority data.

  • 다양한 분야에서 ISO/IEC 11179를 기반으로 MDR(Metadata Registry)시스템들이 개발되었다. 이 논문에서는 앞서 언급한 SQL/MDR문제점 중에서 안전한 접근제어를 보장할 수 있는 방법으로 MCL(Metadata Control Language)을 제안한다.

  • It leads to develop the query system with artificial intelligent technologies to handle inaccurate query. To develop the query system, metadata is essential to control a uncertain data, providing information about uncertainty of the data, and the classification system of metadata are necessary. This paper shows a classification of metadata based on fuzzy theory and the implementation processing to process the fuzzy query in a relational database system.

  • In this study, data repository information registered in re3data (re3data.org), a research data registry, was collected. Based on collected data, the current status was analyzed for 354 repositories (approximately 14% of total repositories) in the field using keywords in the ecological field suggested by two experts. Major metadata formats used to describe data in ecological research data repositories include Federal Geographic Data Committee Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC/CSDGM), Dublin Core, ISO 19115, Ecological Metadata Language (EML), Directory Interchange Format (DIF), Darwin Core, Data Documentation Initiative (DDI), and DataCite Metadata Schema. The number of ecological repositories according to country is 102 in the US, 34 in Germany, 31 in Canada, and one in Korea. A total of 771 non-profit organizations and 12 for-profit organizations are involved in the construction of the ecological field research data repository. Data version control ratio of the ecological field research data repositories registered in re3data was analyzed to be somewhat higher (86.6%) than the total ratio (83.9%). Results of this study can be used to establish policies to build and operate a research data repository in the ecological field.

  • The study aims at identifying catalogers' perception of competencies in cataloging. The study focuses on cataloging and classification knowledge, library systems, materials, metadata formats, authority control, foreign language, computer skills, and interdependence and personal skills. It discusses the gap between previous studies and catalogers' perceptions of competencies required for the job. It provides implications for cataloging education. It has values in that the study as an exploratory study urges continuous studies to identify how catalogers' perceptions are changed according to information environment. It will be a base to develop job descriptions for catalogers.

  • As XML is becoming a de facto standard for distribution and sharing of information, the need for an efficient yet secure access of XML data has become very important. To enforce the fine-level granularity requirement, authorization models for regulating access to XML documents use XPath which is a standard for specifying parts of XML data and a suitable language for both query processing. An access control environment for XML documents and some techniques to deal with authorization priorities and conflict resolution issues are proposed. Despite this, relatively little work has been done to enforce access controls particularly for XML databases in the case of query access. Developing an efficient mechanism for XML databases to control query-based access is therefore the central theme of this paper. This work is a proposal for an efficient yet secure XML access control system. The basic idea utilized is that a user query interaction with only necessary access control rules is modified to an alternative form which is guaranteed to have no access violations using tree-aware metadata of XML schemes and set operators supported by XPath 2.0. The scheme can be applied to any XML database management system and has several advantages over other suggested schemes. These include implementation easiness, small execution time overhead, fine-grained controls, and safe and correct query modification. The experimental results clearly demonstrate the efficiency of the approach.
