  • Objectives: To evaluate the effect of acupuncture as an adjunct treatment to increase the success rate of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Methods: A review of the English and Korean literature was conducted to identify studies on acupuncture as an adjunct treatment to IVF. The main outcome measures were the biochemical pregnancy rate (BPR), the implantation rate (IR), the clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), the miscarriage rate (MR), the on-going pregnancy rate (OPR) and the live birth rate (LBR). Results: Nine meta-analyses of 11 systematic reviews (SRs) were included in this review. In four SRs, the overall IVF outcomes regardless of the procedural steps were documented; two of these SRs reported a significant effect on the CPR. One SR reported that acupuncture at the time of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation had a significant effect on the BPR. Seven SRs reported that acupuncture had no significant impact on transvaginal oocyte retrieval (TVOR). In eight SRs, significant impacts on the CPR, LIBR and OPR were reported when acupuncture was performed around the time of embryo transfer (ET). The results of repeated acupuncture after ET were included in two SRs, which included the same primary studies. The results of the SRs showed that acupuncture had a positive effect on the CPR. Conclusions: When the complete IVF procedure is analysed, there is conflicting evidence in that some reviews have found that acupuncture leads to an increased CPR but others have not. In addition, the reviews presented no evidence to suggest that acupuncture has any specific risks.

  • Objectives This study aimed to search the Chinese literature on acupotomy for lumbar disc herniation and to analyze their methodologies. Methods Using 4 Chinese databases (CBM [www.sinomed.ac.cn], CNKI [www.cnki.net], WANFANG [www.wanfangdata.com], and WEIPU [www.cqvip.com]), we searched for clinical trials conducted in China over the past 10 years on acupotomy for lumbar disc herniation. The search terms used were "(腰椎椎間板脫出症 or 椎間板脫出症 or 椎間板脫出) and (针刀or 针刀松解术)" and we selected only meta-analyses that were published before December 2016. From among these meta-analyses, we excluded duplicates and selected the remaining 36 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for our final analysis. Results The largest numbers of acupotomy papers were published in 2008 and 2013 (8 papers each). The average number of subjects was 120; the most common treatment method used for the control group was standard acupuncture (in 11 papers), and the most common concurrent treatment in the treatment group was massage (in 10 papers). The most common site of needle insertion was between the spinous processes, or at less than 0.5 cm on either side of the spinous processes (in 24 papers). The most common site of adhesion lysis was at the transverse process (in 24 papers). Two studies were blinded, and the mean Jadad score was 1.17. Conclusions A large number of RCTs on the use of acupotomy for lumbar disc herniation are conducted every year in China, and the procedure has been shown to be very effective, with few adverse effects. However, the average quality of the studies was not very high. Based on our study, we expect several high-quality clinical trials on acupotomy to be conducted in Korea in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify trends in the type and method of Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) by investigating studies on the type and method of convergence study of the IMU by systematic review. The study was conducted using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. 23 studies that meet the selection criteria were selected from 630 studies identified by three databases. As a result of this study, showed that various research using IMU was being conducted around the world, and the type of IMU was strap, full body suit, belt, wrist watch, shoes and glove. Among them, the number of strap-type IMUs was the largest at 11. The IMU's strengths were simplicity, real-time data collection and ease of application, which were used as measurement methods such as task, walking, and range of joint. The result of this study is expected to be used as basic data for experts in the medical and rehabilitation fields that conduct IMU research.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify trends in the application of artificial intelligence by analyzing upper extremity movement assessment and artificial intelligence convergence research using a systematic literature review method. The research was conducted using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Among the 380 articles searched in three databases, 8 articles were finally selected according to the selection and exclusion criteria. For the evaluation of upper extremity movement, motion performance evaluation, FMA, and ARAT were used. For quantification, data were extracted using various tools, and upper extremity movement classification, recovery prognosis prediction, and evaluation tool score were predicted using artificial intelligence. This study is meaningful in that it systematically reviewed studies that objectively evaluated upper extremity movement using artificial intelligence and identified the direction in which artificial intelligence is being applied. Based on this, the introduction of artificial intelligence technology in the assessment of upper extremity movements is expected to help objectively identify the intervention effect and the patient's recovery.

  • The study examined whether the relation between mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics achievement was partially mediated by the learning strategies, using latent growth model analyses. It was also examined the auto-regressive, cross-lagged (ARCL) panel model for testing the stability and change in the relation of mathematics self-efficacy and learning strategy over time. The study analyzed the first-year to the third-year data of the Korean Educational Longitudinal Survey (KELS). The result of ARCL panel model analysis showed that earlier mathematics self-efficacy could predict later learning strategy use. There were linear trends in mathematics self-efficacy, learning strategy, and mathematics achievement. Specifically, mathematics achievement was increased over the three time points, whereas mathematics self-efficacy and learning strategies were significantly decreased. In the analyses of latent growth models, the mediating effects of learning strategies were overall supported. That is, both of initial status and change rate of rehearsal strategy partially mediated the relation of mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics achievement. However, in elaboration and meta-cognitive strategies, only the initial status of each variable showed the indirect relationship.

  • Using a SHRIMP ion microprobe, we have dated zircon grains of a felsic meta-tuff from the so-cal1ed Munjuri Formation, Ogcheon metamorphic belt. The weighted mean $^{206}$ Pb/$^{238}$ U zircon ages obtained from 13 spot analyses of 10 grains provide an essentially concordant age of 747${\pm}$7Ma. This result corroborates the conventional U-Pb zircon age (756${\pm}$1Ma; Lee et al., 1998) for the Neoproterozoic bimodal volcanism in the Ogcheon belt. Thus, proto-basins associated with intracontinental, high-volcanicity rift in the Ogcheon belt are most likely to have formed at ca. 750 Ma.

  • Objectives This systematic review is to support the effectiveness of herbal medicine for the treatment of simple obesity in adults. Methods A total of 8 electronic databases were searched in English, Chinese and Korean. Standard methodologies for the systematic review were used to search, analyze and synthesize data based on NECA's guideline for undertaking systematic review and meta-analyses for intervention. Results After screening 1781 potential articles, we identified 13 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We conducted a meta-analysis for the study using Bangpungtongsung-san and Taeeumjowi-tang to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal medicines on weight loss compared to placebo control. Both herbs showed positive effect in weight, body mass index and waist circumference. In an analysis comparing herbal effects considering constitutions showed that proper treatment can lower adverse events. Conclusions Our results provide evidence that herbal medicine can be an effective treatment for the obesity compare to placebo or to conventional medicine without serious adverse events. Further study is needed to evaluate effectiveness of herbal medicines considering personalized treatment and its safety.

  • Mitotic analyses of the coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kitsuch) revealed a mode of 2n=60 whit 46 meta or submetacentric and 14 acrocentric chromosomes (NF=106). Individuals with 2n=61 were also found in both sexes in the same population; the karyotype is composed of 45 meta or submetacentric and 16 acrocentric chromosomes (NF=106). This result may indicate that Robertsonian chromosomal polymorphism occurred in the population of the coho salmon.

  • The genetic regulation of glucose and insulin levels might be modified by adiposity. With regard to the genetic factors that are altered by adiposity, a large meta-analysis on the interactions between genetic variants and body mass index with regard to fasting glucose and insulin levels was reported by the Meta-Analyses of Glucose- and Insulin-related trait Consortium (MAGIC), based on European ancestry. Because no replication study has been performed in other ethnic groups, we first examined the link between reported single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and fasting glucose and insulin levels in a large Korean cohort (Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study cohort [KoGES], n = 5,814). The MAGIC study reported 7 novel SNPs for fasting glucose levels and 6 novel SNPs for fasting insulin levels. In this study, we attempted to replicate the association of 5 SNPs with fasting glucose levels and 5 SNPs with fasting insulin levels. One SNP (rs2293941) in PDX1 was identified as a significant obesity-modifiable factor in Koreans. Our results indicate that the novel loci that were identified by MAGIC are poorly replicated in other ethnic groups, although we do not know why.

  • Piezoelectric and dielectric behaviors of a piezoceramic patch adhesively centered on a carbon composite plate are identified using a robust multi-objective optimization procedure. For this purpose, the patch piezoelectric stress coupling and blocked dielectric constants are automatically evaluated for a wide frequency range and for the different identifiable behaviors. Latters' symmetry conditions are coded in the design plans serving for response surface methodology-based sensitivity analysis and meta-modeling. The identified constants result from the measured and computed open-circuit frequencies deviations minimization by a genetic algorithm that uses meta-model estimated frequencies. Present investigations show that the bonded piezoceramic patch has effective three-dimensional (3D) orthotropic piezoelectric and dielectric behaviors. Besides, the sensitivity analysis indicates that four constants, from eight, dominate the 3D orthotropic behavior, and that the analyses can be reduced to the electromechanically coupled modes only; therefore, in this case, and if only the dominated parameters are optimized while the others keep their nominal values, the resulting piezoelectric and dielectric behaviors are found to be transverse-isotropic. These results can help designing piezoceramics smart composites for various applications like noise, vibration, shape, and health control.
