The Imgye and the Samhwa granitoids distributed in the northeastern part of the Okchon Zone are known to be emplaced during the Mesozoic time. These granitoids intruded the Precambrian metasedimentary bedrocks and Cambro-ordovician sedimentary rocks. Petrographically the Samhwa granitoid is a biotite granite of mainly coars-grained texture with some fine-grained exceptions and the Imgye granitoid contains typically large phenocrysts of pinkish K-feldspars. Geochemical discriminators in terms of major elements suggest that the Samhwa and the Imgye granitoids are I-type and magnetite series. These granitoids are also classified as calc-alkalic rocks of subalkalic series. The Imgye and the Samhwa granitoids could have been evolved mainly by fractional crystallization and minimum partial melting respectively.
The Au-Ag lode deposits in South Korea are closely associated with the Mesozoic granitoids. Namely, the Jurassic deposits formed in mesozonal environments related to deep-seated granitoids, whereas the Cretaceous ones were developed in porphyry-related environments related to subvolcanic granitoids. The time-space relationships of the Au-Ag lode deposits in South Korea are closely related to the changing plate motions during the Mesozoic. Most of the Jurassic auriferous deposits (about $165{\sim}145$ Ma) show fluid characteristics typical of an orogenic-type gold deposits, and were probably generated in a compressional to transpressional regime caused by an orthogonal to oblique convergence of the Izanagi Plate into the East Asian continental margin. On the other hand, strike-slip faults and caldera-related fractures together with subvolcanic activity are associated with major strike-slip faults reactivated by a northward (oblique) to northwestward (orthogonal) convergence, and probably have played an important role in the formation of the Cretaceous Au-Ag lode deposits (about $110{\sim}45$ Ma) under a continental arc setting. The temporal and spatial distinctions between the two typical Mesozoic deposit styles in South Korea probably reflect a different thermal episodes (i.e., late orogenic and post-orogenic) and ore-forming fluids related to different depths of emplacement of magma due to regional changes in tectonic environment.
The Okdong Fault is situated in Okdong-Hamchang area, the central part of Korea. The area consists of Precambrian gneisses and granitoids, Paleozoic clastic and carbonate rocks, and Mesozoic clastic rocks and igneous intrusives. The Okdong Fault is situated along contact boundary between the lowermost Cambrian Basal Quartzite and Precambrian basements. Mylonites occur as narrow zone which is extended over 100km and is restricted to within 10m-30m along the Okdong Fault. The main features of mylonites are quartz mylonite derived from Cambrian Basal Quartzite and mylonitic granitoids from Precambrian granitoids. Movement sense is deduced as a sinistral strike-slip movement with evidence of rotation of sheared porphyroclasts, rotation of fragments and S/C-bands. The mylonite zone has been reactivated as fault which reveals oblique-slip movement. The fault resurges as faults which reveals normal(to the NW) and reverse(to the SE) dip-slip movement. Normal faults are dominant in the northern and southern part and reverse or thrust faults are dominant in the central part of the Okdong Fault. The thrust movement can be correlated with the Daebo Orogeny of Jurassic Period. Granites and dyke rocks intruded into Paleozoic and Precambrian rocks during Cretaceous Period.
By relating mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry to observed magnetic properties, an understanding of the geological factors that control magnetic signatures is obtained. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and geochemical analyses were carried out for 160 samples in the Jurassic to Cretaceous granitoids, which is distributed to Pocheon, Jipori, Geumsan, Namwon, Songnisan, Yongdam, Masan, Jindong, and Taebaeksan areas. The magnetic properties of igneous infusion in these granites reflect bulk rock composition, reduction-oxidation state, hydrothermal alteration which are controlled by tectonic setting, composition and history of the source region, depth of emplacement and nature of wall rocks.
The NE-trending Honam shear zone is a broad, dextral strike-slip fault zone between the southern margin of the Okcheon Belt and the Precambrian Yeongnam Massif in South Korea and is parallel to the trend of Sinian deformation that is conspicuous in Far East Asia. In this paper, we report geochemical and isotopic(Sr and Nd) data of mylonitic quartz-muscovite Precambrian gneisses and surrounding foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids near the Myeongho area in the Yecheon Shear Zone, a representative segment of the Honam Shear Zone. Foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids commonly plot in the granodiorite field($SiO_2=61.9-67.1\;wt%$ and $Na_2O+K_2O=5.21-6.99\;wt%$) on $SiO_2$ vs. $Na_2O+K_2O$ discrimination diagram, whereas quartz-muscovite Precambrian orthogneisses plot in the granite field. The foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids are mostly calcic and calc-alkalic and are dominantly magnesian in a modified alkali-lime index(MALI) and Fe# [$=FeO_{total}(FeO_{total}+MgO)$] versus $SiO_2$ diagrams, which correspond with geochemical characteristics of Cordilleran Mesozoic batholiths. The foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids have molar ratios of $Al_2O_3/(CaO+Na_2O+K_2O)$ ranging from 0.89 to 1.10 and are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous, indicating I type. In contrast, Paleoproterozoic orthogneisses have peraluminous compositions, with molar ratios of $Al_2O_3/(CaO+Na_2O+K_2O)$ ranging from 1.11 to 1.22. On trace element spider diagrams normalized to the primitive mantle, the large ion lithophile element(LILE) enrichments(Rb, Ba, Th and U) and negative Ta-Nb-P-Ti anomalies of foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids and mylonitized quartz-muscovite gneisses in the Yecheon Shear Zone are features common to subduction-related granitoids and are also found in granitoids from a crustal source derived from the arc crust of active continental margin. ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}(T)$ and initial Sr-ratio ratios of foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids with suggest the involvement of upper crust-derived melts in granitoid petrogenesis. Foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids in the study area, together with the Yeongju Batholith, show not changing contents of specific elements(Ti, P, Zr, V and Y) from shear zone to the area near the shear zone. These results suggest that no volume changes and geochemical alterations in fluid-rich foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids may occur during deformation, which mass transfer by fluid flow into the shear zone is equal to the mass transfer out of the shear zone.
The Mesozoic leucocratic granite in the northeastern margin of the Taebaeksan Basin was transformed to protomylonite and mylonite. Mylonitic foliations generally strike to NWWNW and dip to NE with the development of a sinistral strike-slip (top-to-the-northwest) shear sense. Grain-size reduction of feldspar in the mylonitized leucocratic granite occurred due to fracturing, myrmekite formation and neocrystallization of albitic plagioclase along the shear fractures of K-feldspar porphyroclasts. As the deformation proceeded, compositional layering consisting of feldspar-, quartz- and/or muscovite-rich layers developed in the mylonite. In the feldspar-rich layer, fine-grained albitic plagioclase and interstitial K-feldspar were deformed dominantly by granular flow. On the other hand, quartz-rich layers containing core-mantle and quartz ribbons structures were deformed by dislocation creep. Based on calculations from conventional two-feldspar and ternary feldspar geothermometers, mylonitization temperatures of the leucocratic granite range from 360 to $450^{\circ}C$. It thus indicates that the mylonitization has occurred under greenschist-facies conditions. Based on the geochemical features and previous chronological data, the leucocratic granite was emplaced during the Middle Jurassic at volcanic arc setting associated with crustal thickening. And then the mylonitization of the granite occurred during the late Middle to Late Jurassic (150-165 Ma). Therefore, the mylonitization of the Jurassic granitoids in the Taebaeksan Basin was closely related to the development of the Honam shear zone.
We present data from the Mesozoic Keumkang, Palbong, and Baekhwa granites in Garorim Bay, in the southwestern part of the Gyeonggi massif, South Korea. Using major and trace element concentrations, Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions, and sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) zircon U-Pb ages, we aim to constrain the petrogenesis of the granites and explain their origin within a broader regional geological context. SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages of $232.8{\pm}3.2$, $175.9{\pm}1.2$, and $176.8{\pm}9.8$ Ma were obtained from the Keumkang, Palbong and Baekhwa granites, respectively. The Late Triassic Keumkang granites belong to the shoshonite series and show an overall enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE), a depletion in high field strength elements (HFSE) relative to primitive mantle, compared with neighboring elements in the primitive mantle-normalized incompatible trace element diagram with notable high Ba and Sr contents, and negligible Eu anomalies. The Keumkang granites are typified by highly radiogenic Sr and unradiogenic Nd and Pb isotopic compositions: $(^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr)_i=0.70931-0.70959$, $(^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd)_i=0.511472-0.511484$ [$({\varepsilon}_{Nd})_i=-17.0$ to -16.7], and $(^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb)=17.26-17.27$. The Middle Jurassic Palbong and Baekhwa granites belong to the medium- to high-K calc-alkaline series, and show LILE enrichment and HFSE depletion similar to the Keumkang granites, but exhibit significant negative anomalies in Ba, Sr, and Eu. Furthermore, they have elevated Y and Yb contents at any given $SiO_2$ content compared with other Jurassic granitoids from the Gyeonggi massif. The Palbong and Baekhwa granites have slightly less radiogenic Sr and more radiogenic Nd and Pb isotopic compositions [$(^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr)_i=0.70396-0.70908$, $(^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd)_i=0.511622-0.511660$, $({\varepsilon}_{Nd})_i=-15.4$ to -14.7, $(^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb)=17.56-17.76$] relative to the Keumkang granites. The Keumkang granites are considered to have formed in a post-collisional environment following the Permo-Triassic Songrim orogeny that records continent-continent collision between the North and South China blocks, and may have formed by fractional crystallization of metasomatized lithospheric mantle-derived mafic melts. The Palbong and Baekhwa granites may have been produced from a gabbroic assemblage at pressures of less than ~15 kbar, associated with subduction of the paleo-Pacific (Izanagi) plate at the Eurasian continental margin. Elevated ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}(t)$ values in the granitoids from the southwestern part of the Gyeonggi massif relative to those of the central and northern parts, together with the comparatively shallow depth of origin, imply the presence of an exotic block in the Korean lithosphere.
Various Mesozoic igneous rocks such as biotite granite, leucogranites, granodiorite, hornblende gabbros, quartz gabbros and tonalite are identified in the Dangjin area, the western Gyeonggi Massif, Korea. The major Mesozoic igneous activities in the Dangjin area are recognized as periods of ca. 227 Ma, ca. 190 Ma, ca. 185 Ma and ca. 175 Ma. Gabbroic rocks consist mainly of hornblende gabbros and quartz gabbros which are characterized by dominant hornblende and occur as small stocks. The gabbroic rocks have intrusion ages between 185 and 175 Ma. Triassic biotite granite ($225{\pm}2.3Ma$) is considered to be a post-collisional granite similar in geochemistry to the southern Haemi granite ($233{\pm}2Ma$, Choi et al., 2009). Although the main magma source of biotite granite appears to be a granitic continental crust, the biotite granite could have a small amount of mafic rocks as a magma source, or a small amount of mantle-derived melts (i.e., mafic melts) could have contributed to the formation of primitive granite magma in composition. Jurassic granitoids and gabbroic rocks in the Dangjin area are considered to be continental arc igneous rocks associated with the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate. It is presumed that the leucogranites are formed by crustal anatexis of granitic materials and the gabbroic rocks are formed by partial melting of enriched mantle.
Temporal and spatial distribution patterns of the magmatic rocks and associated ore deposits in the Mesozoic magmatic - metallogenic belt along the Yangtz River, Anhui Province are used to determine and discuss the crust - mantle interaction processes. The magmatic rocks are Cu - Au mineralized high - K calc - alkalic intermediate ¬acidic (CAK) and Fe - Cu mineralized high - Na alkalic - calc intermediate - basic intrusive rocks (FCN) in the central part of the belt and grade to Cu - Mo - Pb - Zn - Ag mineralized calc - alkalic granitoids (CMG) and A - type granites (AG) in the southern and northern parts of the belt. Samples from the CAK and CMG yield Rb - Sr isochron ages of 137 - 140Ma with $(^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr)_{o}$ = 0.7060 - 0.7101, while those from the FCN and AG yield the ages of 120 - 129Ma with $(^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr)_{o}$ = 0.7047 - 0.7077. The Sr isotope ratios, CriTh ratios 0.4 - 3.1), Eu/Eu* ratios < 0.79 - 1.05) and initial epsilon (Nd) values (-16.6 - -6.3) for the CAK and CMG are consistent with magma derivation from old metamorphic basement rocks rich in metallogenic elements through a two - stage process of mantle - derived magma underplating caused by primary lithosphere extension and subsequent partial melting. On the basis of Sr isotope data, CriTh ratios (3.4 - 13.8), Eu/Eu* ratios (0.86 - 1.13) and initial epsilon (Nd) values (-7.7 - +1.4), the FCN and AG are considered to be formed through syntexis with material input from the mantle that resulted from further lithosphere extension followed by mantle - derived magma underplating on a large scale.
