  • In this study, 2-D Godunov type finite volume model which can apply the mixed mesh including triangular and quadrilateral meshes for flood inundation modeling is used to compare and analyze the flood height, flood extent and model execution time according to mesh type and resolution. The study area is the Upton-upon Severn watershed in Great Britain, where the flood occurred for 22 days from October 29 to November 19, 2000. For the flood modeling, topographic data were constructed using high resolution LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging). The results of the 2-D flood modeling by the mesh type and resolution were compared with four ASAR (Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar) images captured during the flood period. This study has shown that flood height and extent can vary greatly depending on the mesh type and resolution, even if identical topography and boundary conditions are used, and that the selection of appropriate mesh type and resolution for the purpose and situation of the 2-D flood modeling is necessary.

  • In this paper, an effective procedure is presented for the local recovery of displacements and stresses in multilayered composite panels, which incorporate the local refinement using mesh superposition. The mesh superposition method is used to refine the global coarse mesh by superimposing refined mesh to the localized zone of interest without transition zones. The finite element model used is a solid element based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The a posteriori computation of the through-the-thickness distributions of displacements and stresses is achieved using a predictor-corrector procedure. The procedure utilizes the superconvergent stresses and nodal displacements of the finite element patch. The element patch is generated by locally superimposing a refined local mesh to the coarse global mesh.

  • There are two representative geometry rendering methods. One is Geometry Clipmaps, another is ROAM 2.0. We propose an extended Geometry Clipmaps algorithm which does not focus on CPU operation but the GPU for faster and wider visibility area. The extended algorithm presents mesh configuration method of each level by LOD, how to configurate Mesh network between levels, mesh block method for rendering optimization using VFC, and image mapping method to get high resolution up to 1 m.

  • In this paper, we propose a new scheme for geometry coding of three-dimensional (3-D) mesh models using a fixed spectral basis. In order to code the mesh geometry information, we generate a fixed spectral basis using the dual graph derived from the 3-D mesh topology. After we partition a 3-D mesh model into several independent sub-meshes to reduce coding complexity, the mesh geometry information is projected onto the generated orthonormal bases which are the eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix of the 3-D mesh. Finally, spectral coefficients are coded by a quantizer and a variable length coder. The proposed scheme can not only overcome difficulty of generating a fixed spectral basis, but also reduce coding complexity. Moreover, we can provide an efficient multi-resolution representation of 3-D meshes.

  • A stainless steel mesh was applied to the cathode of an electro-Fenton system. Methylene blue (MB) solution was chosen as the model waste water with non-biodegradable pollutants. For the model waste water, the degradation efficiency was compared among various SUS mesh cathodes with different surface treatments and magnetite coatings on them. With increasing amount of the magnetite coating on SUS mesh, the degradation efficiency also increased. The improved electro-catalytic characteristic was explained by the increased amount of in situ generated hydrogen peroxide near the cathode surface. Cyclic voltammetry data also showed improved electro-catalytic performance for SUS mesh with more magnetite coatings on them.

  • Using empirical data of fish performance and physiological limits as well as physical stimuli and environmental data, a cod-end selectivity model based on a chaotic behavior model using the psycho-hydraulic wheel and neural-network approach was established to predict fish escape or herding responses in trawl and cod-end designs. Fish responses in the cod-end were categorized as escape or herding reactions based on their relative positions and reactions to the net wall. Fish movements were regulated by three factors: escape time, a visual looming effect, and an index of body girth-mesh size. The model was applied to haddock in a North Sea bottom trawl including frequencies of movement components, swimming speed, angular velocity, distance to net wall, and the caught-fish ratio; simulation results were similar to field observations. The ratio of retained fish in the cod-end was limited to 37-95% by optomotor coefficient values of 0.3-1.0 and to 13-67% by looming coefficient values of 0.1-1.0. The selectivity curves generated by this model were sensitive to changes in mesh size, towing speed, mesh type, and mesh shape.

  • A special finite difference method for nonlinear dynamic response analysis of semi-infinite foundation soil using mapping which transforms semi-infinite domain into finite domain is presented here. For the region of engineering interest, mapping is isometric, and fur far field, shrink mapping which transforms infinite interval into finite interval is adopted. At first, the responses of semi-infinite foundation soil with linear constituting model are computed, and compared with theoretical results and those of existing method. Good agreements are obtained among the results of the proposed method, Lamb's theory and FEM with extensive mesh model. Then the responses of infinite foundation soil are computed by the present method, using small and large mesh model. The results of small and large mesh models agree well with each other, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • We present a legorization framework that produces a LEGO model from user-specified 3D mesh model. Our framework is composed of two stages: voxelization and legorization. In the voxelization, input 3D mesh is converted to a voxel model. To preserve the shape of the 3D mesh, we devise a silhouette fitting process for the initial voxel model. For legorization, we propose three objectives: stability, aesthetics and efficiency. These objectives are expressed in a tiling equation, which builds a LEGO model using layer-by-layer approach. We legorize five models including characters and buildings to prove the excellence of our framework.

  • Distinct from the Markov random field or pseudo 2D HMM models for image analysis, this paper proposes a new model of 2D hidden Markov mesh chain(HMMM) model which subsumes the definitions of and the assumptions underlying the conventional HMM. The proposed model is a new theoretical realization of 2D HMM with the causality of top-down and left-right progression and the complete lattice constraint. These two conditions enable an efficient mesh decoding for model estimation and a recursive maximum likelihood estimation of model parameters. Those algorithms are developed in theoretical perspective and, in particular, the training algorithm, it is proved, attains the optimal set of parameters.

  • This study concerns an advanced 3D surface reconstruction method that the vertices of surface model can be completely matched to the unstructured point cloud measured from arbitrary complex shapes. The concept of bounding voxel model is introduced to generate the mesh model well-representing the geometrical and topological characteristics of point cloud. In the reconstruction processes, the application of various methodologies such as shrink-wrapping, mesh simplification, local subdivision surface fitting, insertion of is isolated points, mesh optimization and so on, are required. Especially, the effectiveness, rapidity and reliability of the proposed surface reconstruction method are demonstrated by the simulation results for the geometrically and topologically complex shapes like dragon and human mouth.
