A study on the removal of mercury by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Aureobasidium pullulans was done, in which the model of adsorption isotherm and adsorption rate was proposed. The adsorption isotherm of mercury by S. cerevisiae was accorded with Langmuir model but A. pullulans was followed to Freundlich model. The amount of mercury removed by A. pullulans was higher than that of S. cerevisiae, but the adsorption rate of mercury by A. pullulans was slower than that of S. cerevisiae. In a rapid adsorption process, therefore, it is more useful to use S. cerevisiae as a biosobent.
In Korea, not much interest has been paid yet to mercury among flue gas HAPs (Hazardous Air Pollutants), but mercury is expected to become a major problem in the near future. The present paper investigates the current state of mercury emission and control technologies. Interest of the U.S. and European countries in the area of air pollution has been recently directed to mercury emitted from power plants. There are largely two mercury removal technologies applied to power plants. One is removing mercury by oxidizing elemental mercury in WFGD (Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization), and the other is spraying an adsorbent such as activated carbon or other novel sorbents (low-cost sorbents). Developed country is requiring that all power plants be equipped with mercury control facilities by 2007. This paper aims at contributing to the establishment of future strategies in response to the problem.
A new strain of Pseudomonas sp. was isolated from mercury (Hg)-contaminated sites in Taiwan. This bacterium removed more than 80% of Hg present in the culture medium at 12 h incubation and was chosen for further analysis of the molecular mechanisms of Hg tolerance/removal abilities in this Pseudomonas sp. We used RNA-seq, one of the next-generation sequencing methods, to investigate the transcriptomic responses of the Pseudomonas sp. exposed to 60 mg/L of Hg2+. We de novo assembled 4,963 contigs, of which 10,533 up-regulated genes and 5,451 down-regulated genes were found to be regulated by Hg. The 40 genes most altered in expression levels were associated with tolerance to Hg stress and metabolism. Functional analysis showed that some Hg-tolerant genes were related to the mer operon, sulfate uptake and assimilation, the enzymatic antioxidant system, the HSP gene family, chaperones, and metal transporters. The transcriptome were analyzed further with Gene Ontology (GO) and Cluster of Orthologous Groups (COGs) of proteins and showed diverse biological functions and metabolic pathways under Hg stress.
CuCl2-loaded V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst showed excellent activity in the catalytic oxidation of elemental mercury to oxidized mercury even under SCR condition in the presence of NH3, which is well known to significantly inhibit the oxidation activity of elemental mercury by HCl. Moreover, it was confirmed that, when SO2 was present in the reaction gas together with HCl, excellent elemental mercury oxidation activity was maintained even though CuCl2 supported on the catalyst surface was converted to CuSO4. This is thought to be because not only HCl but also the SO4 component generated on the catalyst surface promotes the oxidation of elemental mercury. However, in the presence of SO2, the total mercury balance before and after the catalytic reaction was not matched, especially as the concentration of SO2 increased. In order to understand the cause of this, further studies are needed to investigate the effect of SO2 in the SnCl2 aqueous solution employed for mercury species analysis and the effect of sulfate ions generated on elemental mercury oxidation. It was confirmed that SO2 also promotes NOx removal activity, which is thought to be because the increase in acid sites by SO4 generated on the catalyst surface by SO2 facilitates NH3 adsorption. The composition change and structure of the components present on the catalyst surface under various reaction conditions were measured by XRD and XRF. These measurement results were presented as a rational explanation for the results that SO2 enhances the oxidation activity of elemental mercury and the NOx removal activity in this catalyst system.

The emission characteristics of mercury in waste incinerators were investigated to get basic data for the policy development on the emission reduction of mercury (Hg). For the study several important factors were analysed from 4 incinerators such as mercury concentration, emission factors and removal rate for control devices. The results are listed below. Mercury concentrations in the flue gas were 0.39~5.96 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥ in MWI and 2.5~8.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥ in IWI. The distributions of gaseous and particulate mercury in flue gas were above 99% and below 1 %, respectively. Therefore, in order to remove mercury effectively, it is important to control the gaseous mercury. Mercury concentrations in fly ash collected from control device were found as 16.2~35.6 mg/kg- ash in FF of MWI. Also mercury concentrations at the front and back point of control device of MWI were 33.45~62.65 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥ and 0.88~3.49 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥, respectively. Emission factors were estimated as 3.67~11.67 mg/ton in FF, 2.6~24.5 mg/ton in MWI with SNCR, SDR and FF, 54.9~192.7 mg/ton in IWI with Cyclone and FF. Emissions from Municipal Waste Incinerator were found both in minimum and maximum ranges. Annual mercury emissions emitted from MWI was estimated as 20.0 kg (6.0~33.9 kg).
Emission of heavy metals as hazardous air pollutants has been focused with tightening regulatory limits due to their hazardousness. Measurements and characteristic investigations of heavy metals emitted from a commercial power plant burning anthracite coal have been carried out. The plant consists of a circulating fluidized bed combustor, a cyclone, a boiler and an electrostatic precipitator(ESP) in series. Dust and gaseous samples were collected to measure main heavy metals including gaseous mercury before ESP and at stack. Dust emissions as total particulate matter (TPM), PM-10 and PM-2.5 at inlet of ESP were very high with 23,274, 9,555 and $7,790mg/Sm^3$, respectively, as expected, which is much higher than those from pulverized coal power plants. However TPM at stack was less than $0.16mg/Sm^3$, due to high dust removal efficiency by ESP. Similarly heavy metals emission showed high collection efficiency across ESP. From particle size distribution and metal enrichment in sizes, several metal concentrations could be correlated with particle size showing more enrichment in smaller particles. Mercury unlike other solid metals behaved differently by emitting as gaseous state due to high volatility. Removal of mercury was quite less than other metals due to it's volatility, which was 68% only. Across ESP, speciation change of mercury from elemental to oxidized was clearly shown so that elemental mercury was half of total mercury at stack unlike other coal power plants which equipped wet a scrubber.
Potassium methylselenite ($KSeO_2(OCH_3)$) was reduced to elemental selenium, Se(0), and then doped onto montmorillonite K 10 (MK10) clay to examine the interaction between elemental mercury (Hg(0)) vapor and Se(0) in an effort to understand the possible heterogeneous reaction of Hg(0) vapor and Se(0) solid. The clay was used as a cost-effective support material for uniform dispersion of Se(0). The Se(0)-doped MK10 showed an excellent reaction performance with Hg(0) under an inert nitrogen gas at 70 and $140^{\circ}C$ in our lab-scale fixed-bed system. However, the precursor, $KSeO_2(OCH_3)$-doped MK10 showed a negligible reaction performance with Hg(0), suggesting that the oxidation state of selenium plays a key role in the reaction of Hg(0) vapor and selenium compounds.
Mercury is a toxic pollutants present in different types of industrial effluents and is responsible for environmental pollution. Removal of Hg(II) ions from synthetic wastewater was studied using the activated biocarbon produced from the leaves of Tridax procumbens (Asteraceae). The particle size of the biocarbon (BC) is in the range of $100-120{\mu}m$. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, pH, contact time, and amount of biocarbon on the biosorption process were studied at temperature of $28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. Batch experimental studies showed that an equilibrium time of 160 min was required for the maximum removal of Hg(II) at the optimized biocarbon dose of 2.5 g per 100 mL of synthetic wastewater. The optimum pH required for maximum removal (96.5%) of Hg(II) ions was found to be 5.5. The biosorption of metal ions onto activated biocarbon surface is probably via an ion exchange mechanism. The biocarbon can be regenerated with minimum loss. Further, it can be reused without any chemical activation. The findings of the research suggested that, the biocarbon produced from cost effective renewable resources can be utilized for the treatment of industrial wastewater.

In recent years, we have been working on the improvement project of mercury 3-lecture type at the Geummundo lighthouse for more than 100 years. We have installed toxic mercury removal, LED light source, and dualization system for nonstop. It can be seen as an example. Circular restoration of the entire frame is performed, and the real-time status can be grasped through the installation of the double-ball bearing and the remote control system. After installation, optical measurement through Hanvit secured the optical performance of 2,000,000 cd of floating brightness of 300cd, proving the efficient possibility of introducing the domestic rotary type light source using LED light source.
