Preserving Our Digital Heritage: A UNESCO Perspective (디지털 유산의 보존: UNESCO의 관점에서)

  • A large part of the vast amounts of information produced in the world is born digital, and comes in a wide variety of formats: text, database, audio, film, image. During the meeting of the Organization's Executive Board in May 2001, Member States agreed on the need for rapid action to safeguard digital heritage. The interest of UNESCO in this situation comes as no surprise. UNESCO exists in part to encourage and enable the preservation and enjoyment of the cultural, scientific and information heritage of the world's peoples. The growth of digital heritage and its vulnerability could hardly go unnoticed. Our societies have witnessed the end of the paradigm of the written archive, a paradigm that had developed over hundreds of years. Throughout the twentieth century new media have wisely and modestly joined this prestigious tradition. This paradigm has already been transformed, and the devices in place are unable to deal with the brutal advance of information technologies, and the quantitative inflation which they cause. This goes beyond those institutions specializing in the management of memory: a whole new regime of information will have to be constructed, and quickly, completely transforming old memory and archiving systems. If this shift does not take place, our societies will suffer irremediable damage in their collective social memory.

A Comparative Analysis of Recursive Query Algorithm Implementations based on High Performance Distributed In-Memory Big Data Processing Platforms (대용량 데이터 처리를 위한 고속 분산 인메모리 플랫폼 기반 재귀적 질의 알고리즘들의 구현 및 비교분석)

  • Recursive query algorithm is used in many social network services, e.g., reachability queries in social networks. Recently, the size of social network data has increased as social network services evolve. As a result, it is almost impossible to use the recursive query algorithm on a single machine. In this paper, we implement recursive query on two popular in-memory distributed platforms, Spark and Twister, to solve this problem. We evaluate the performance of two implementations using 50 machines on Amazon EC2, and real-world data sets: LiveJournal and ClueWeb. The result shows that recursive query algorithm shows better performance on Spark for the Livejournal input data set with relatively high average degree, but smaller vertices. However, recursive query on Twister is superior to Spark for the ClueWeb input data set with relatively low average degree, but many vertices.

Fashion-Cultural Products Design Using Cultural Heritage - Focused on Jikji, Memory of the World of UNESCO - (문화유산을 활용한 패션문화상품 디자인 - 유네스코 기록유산 직지를 중심으로 -)

  • Jikji, Memory of the World of UNESCO, the world's oldest extant movable metal print book, is a cultural heritage to give motivation for IT power of Korea. Although the cultural value of Jikji is understood in Korea, the value of cultural assets is not satisfactory and the commercialization is not sufficient. Furthermore, most Jikji product designs on the market are simple and limited mainly for the old generation. The purpose of this study is to design fashion-cultural products suitable for young people who will be responsible for this cultural inheritance. The methods of this study were to make the design development through literature research and a case study for Jikji products on the market. For developing the products suitable for young people, 308 university students in Chungju were surveyed. To express end products, computer graphic program, Illustrator CS5, was used. The results of this study showed that the products on the market were not targeted for use by young people. The younger generations want modern and interesting design. Among the 8 design motives that are planned for design development, the most preferred motive numbers, 3, 7, and 8, were used. Design items, such as scarf, wallet and t-shirts, were selected by the result of survey and 3 scarves, 4 wallets, 3 t-shirts, a total of 30 items were developed. The designed products in this study can inform the cultural resource of Korea and contribute to raise the cultural value if they are commercialized.

  • This study started from an interest in the unique history and literature of Okinawa and Jeju Islands. The Battle of Okinawa at a late stage of the Asia-Pacific theatre of World War II, and the indiscriminate violence in the 4.3 Jeju Massacre directly show the shared tragedy of the two islands; furthermore, they are are both located on the frontier of a nation's authority, and thus are symbolic cases. This thesis analyzes Oshiro Tatsuhiro's Island of the Gods and Hyun, Ki Young's Sooni's Uncle, both directly deal with the tragedy of two different but analogous incidents, and question the difference in memory struggle and definitions. Thus, though both novels show a similarity in focusing on and exposing the forbidden memory of mass suicide and massacre, the methods of suggesting the course of memory struggle are different. For example, in contrast to Hyun who took a different approach from the fury, accusations, and violence of South Korea to espoused forgiveness and reconciliation, Oshiro showed the changes in the form of responding to the mainland Japan.

Real-time Task Aware Memory Allocation Techniques for Heterogeneous Mobile Multitasking Environments (이종 모바일 멀티태스킹 환경을 위한 실시간 작업 인지형 메모리 할당 기술 연구)

  • Recently, due to the rapid performance improvement of smartphones and the increase in background executions of mobile apps, multitasking has become common on mobile platforms. Unlike traditional desktop and server apps, response time is important in most mobile apps as they are interactive tasks, and some apps are classified as real-time tasks with deadlines. In this paper, we discuss how to meet the requirements of heterogeneous multitasking in managing memory of real-time and interactive tasks when they are executed together on a smartphone. To do so, we analyze the memory requirement of real-time tasks, and propose a model that has the ability of allocating memory to multitasking tasks on a smartphone. Trace-driven simulations with real-world storage access traces captured by heterogeneous apps show that the proposed model provides reasonable performance for interactive tasks while guaranteeing the requirement of real-time tasks.

Enhancing Dependability of Systems by Exploiting Storage Class Memory (스토리지 클래스 메모리를 활용한 시스템의 신뢰성 향상)

  • In this paper, we adopt Storage Class Memory, which is next-generation non-volatile RAM technology, as part of main memory parallel to DRAM, and exploit the SCM+DRAM main memory system from the dependability perspective. Our system provides instant system on/off without bootstrapping, dynamic selection of process persistence or non-persistence, and fast recovery from power and/or software failure. The advantages of our system are that it does not cause the problems of checkpointing, i.e., heavy overhead and recovery delay. Furthermore, as the system enables full application transparency, our system is easily applicable to real-world environments. As proof of the concept, we implemented a system based on a commodity Linux kernel 2.6.21 operating system. We verify that the persistence enabled processes continue to execute instantly at system off-on without any state and/or data loss. Therefore, we conclude that our system can improve availability and reliability.

Erasure of Memory and Theory of Modern Architecture (이성주의의 기억말소와 비올레 르 ??의 근대건축이론)

  • Since he was a leading figure in nineteenth century architecture, Viollet-le-Duc's architectural theory is crucial to the foundation of modern architecture. He has been called a Gothic Revivalist, a Structural Rationalist and a Positivist. The first title was perhaps due to his vigorous restoration of Gothic works such as $N\hat{o}tre$ Dame, but he did not adore the Gothic style just for itself. Rather, he hoped to deduce some principles from the style. So how did he manage this? In his book "Entretiens sur l'Architecture (Lectures on Architecture), published between 1864 and 1872, he mentions using Descartes' four rules for reaching architectural certainty in contrast with the chaotic situation during that modernising period. Furthermore Viollet-le-Duc's theory can be seen as a serious attempt to translates Descartes' philosophical rules into systems of architectural speculation. Descartes' four rules of doubt are anchored in mathematical propositions, and without mathematical distinctions, none of these rules are valid. In other word, mathematics for Viollet is the yardstick of judgement between distinctness and indistinctness. Many architectural problems arise from this view. In this paper, the validities of applying Descartes' method of doubt to architectural discourse will be discussed in order to address the question:-Did Viollet-le-Duc clearly grasp Cartesian method by which memory was erased from the world?

Development of Deep Learning Models for Multi-class Sentiment Analysis (딥러닝 기반의 다범주 감성분석 모델 개발)

  • Sentiment analysis is the process of determining whether a piece of document, text or conversation is positive, negative, neural or other emotion. Sentiment analysis has been applied for several real-world applications, such as chatbot. In the last five years, the practical use of the chatbot has been prevailing in many field of industry. In the chatbot applications, to recognize the user emotion, sentiment analysis must be performed in advance in order to understand the intent of speakers. The specific emotion is more than describing positive or negative sentences. In light of this context, we propose deep learning models for conducting multi-class sentiment analysis for identifying speaker's emotion which is categorized to be joy, fear, guilt, sad, shame, disgust, and anger. Thus, we develop convolutional neural network (CNN), long short term memory (LSTM), and multi-layer neural network models, as deep neural networks models, for detecting emotion in a sentence. In addition, word embedding process was also applied in our research. In our experiments, we have found that long short term memory (LSTM) model performs best compared to convolutional neural networks and multi-layer neural networks. Moreover, we also show the practical applicability of the deep learning models to the sentiment analysis for chatbot.

An Overview of Cultural Heritage Research and Policy in Central Eurasia (유라시아 문화유산 연구와 정책 동향)

  • Common issues in research and policy on cultural heritage can be extracted among Eurasian countries although countries in the region show different colors of policies and studies. Among them one thing peculiar to Central Asian countries is that in general they do not have well delineated laws and regulations on the protection of cultural heritage. It may be because they had no enough time and experience to legislate and implement relevant laws and regulations ever since they got independence. Research on cultural heritage in Central Asian countries is often made in cooperation with foreign institutions. As shown in archaeological excavation projects in Central Asian countries, cooperative projects exceed noncooperative ones in terms of size and longevity. UNESCO, through its projects on the Serial and Transboundary World Heritage Nomination of the Silk Roads in Central Asia, also supports countries in Central Asia and others along the Silk Road in order to facilitate inclusion of their cultural heritages in the Tentative List of the World Heritage. With regard to activities on the protection of cultural heritage, while respective countries in Central Asia have made good efforts, they could not produce effective outcomes due to short of budget and specialized manpower. They have rich resources of cultural and documentary heritage but their registered heritages on the UNESCO's World Heritage List and Memory of the World are under-represented because of short of technology and experience among other things. A new trend in cultural heritage studies that combined cultural heritage with tourism has merged in recent years. While some critics have raised some negative questions, this new fashion became popular and will continue with the support of governments of Silk Road countries. In conclusion, Korean institutions are further encouraged to organize cooperative networks for research and policy with respective Eurasian countries.

Innovative Solutions for Design and Fabrication of Deep Learning Based Soft Sensor

  • Soft sensors are used to anticipate complicated model parameters using data from classifiers that are comparatively easy to gather. The goal of this study is to use artificial intelligence techniques to design and build soft sensors. The combination of a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network and Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) is used to create a unique soft sensor. LSTM is developed to tackle linear model with strong nonlinearity and unpredictability of manufacturing applications in the learning approach. GWO is used to accomplish input optimization technique for LSTM in order to reduce the model's inappropriate complication. The newly designed soft sensor originally brought LSTM's superior dynamic modeling with GWO's exact variable selection. The performance of our proposal is demonstrated using simulations on real-world datasets.
