  • The aim of this study was to analyze a group of pre-service elementary teachers experience on the cognitive terms of biology inquiry subjects, and experience on living materials related with the domain of life in the Korea elementary school science textbook. Firstly, elementary school pre-service teachers had the confidence of inquiry subjects related with the domain of life such as 'when we take breath what will happen in human body?' and 'Can we make the model of human body?' But they did have the most diffidence of 'The search for pieris rapae, a cabbage butterfly's life', 'Can we grow the little creature?' The reason why pre-service elementary teachers had diffidence of comprehending experiment procedure and planning ability was that 'they focused on understanding the scientific concepts instead of planning experiments by themselves', and 'they carried out the least amount of experiments' Secondly, elementary school pre-service teachers had never experienced biology materials related with the domain of life in the Korea elementary school biology science textbook such as 'tradescantia reflexa', 'Caddis larva', 'hydrilla verticillata', and 'Plantain lily.' According to the findings obtained from the study, the reason why they had never seen the biology materials was that they had the least opportunity of immediately observing life creatures due to memorization-intensive classes.

  • Pansori is a unique genre of Korean art music. Sugungga is a form of Pansori that is so famous as to be included in the representative five texts of Pansori, and is also a fable about a Dragon King who lived in a palace on the water. The Dragon King had a disease and the major plot of the story is the finding of a cure for his illness. At the beginning of Sugungga, Yaksungga appears on the scene in the form of an ascetic who has knowledge of various herbal medicines. By reciting and singing this medical knowledge, Yaksungga functions as an effective mnemonic technique to aid memorization of the herbs and their properties. Yaksungga exists only in Korea, and functions in Sugungga not only as a dramatic factor in the play, but also as a tool that allows people to easily learn professional medical knowledge during those times, not by books, but by funny rhymes, which gave people the opportunities to apply such knowledge in useful ways.

  • Utilizing a structure of operations known as Dissection-Motion-Operations (DMO), a set of mathematics propositions or area-formulas in school mathematics will be introduced through shape-to-shape transforms. The underlying theme for DMO is problem-solving through visual reasoning and proving manipulatively or electronically vs. rote learning and memorization. Visual reasoning is the focus here where two operations that constitute DMO are utilized. One operation is known as Dissection (or Decomposition) operation that operates on a given region in 2D or 3D and dissects it into a number of subregions. The second operation is known as Motion (or Composition) operation applied on the resultant sub-regions to form a distinct area (or volume)-equivalent region. In 2D for example, DMO can transform a given polygon into a variety of new and distinct polygons each of which is area-equivalent to the original polygon (cf [Rahim, M. H. & Sawada, D. (1986). Revitalizing school geometry through Dissection-Motion Operations. Sch. Sci. Math. 86(3), 235-246] and [Rahim, M. H. & Sawada, D. (1990). • The purpose of this study is to discuss about the role of the visualization as an effective method of teaching abstracted mathematics, to analyze visual materials in middle and high school mathematics and to suggest various visualized materials for teaching mathematics effectively. Though formal, symbolic and analytical teaching method is a major characteristic of mathematics, the students should be taught to understand through intuition and insight, and formalize the mathematical concepts progressively. Especially the sight is one of the most important basics of cognition for intuition and insight. Therefore, suggesting mathematical contents through the visual method makes the students understand and formalize the mathematical concepts more easily. In this study, we tried to investigate the meaning and role of visualization in mathematics teaching. And, we discussed about the four roles of visualization in the process of mathematics teaching and learning confirmation and memorization of the mathematical truth, proving theorem and solving problems which is one of the most important purposes of teaching mathematics, According to the roles of visualization, we analyzed visual materials currently taught in middle and high school, and suggested various visual materials useful in teaching mathematics. The investigated fields are algebra where visual materials are little used, and geometry where they are use the most. The paper-made-textbook can't show moving animation vigorously. Hence we suggested visual materials made by GSP and applets in IES .

  • Overlay model had several advantages to describe hysteretic behavior of material and showed good capability for many engineering materials. However, this model is only applicable to material obeying Masing postulate. Some materials such as 316L stainless steel do not follow Masing postulate and show cyclic hardening(or softening) and strain range dependence. Low cycle fatigue tests of 316L stainless steel at 600$^{\circ}C$ were performed to investigate the characteristics of cyclic behavior of non-Masing material. From all tests cyclic softening was observed. There were differences in elastic limit of hysteresis loop according to applied strain range. To consider these features, modified overlay model was developed. Yield stresses of subelements were divided into isotropic and anisotropic part to describe the non-Masing behavior. The plastic strain range memorization was introduced to consider the strain range dependence. The prediction using modified overlay model showed a good accordance to actual hysteresis loops.

  • This paper proposes a novel of a personalized Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) system based on learner's cognitive abilities related to foreign language proficiency. In this CALL system, a strategy of retrieval learning, a method of learning memory cycle, and a method of repeated learning are applied for effective vocabulary memorization. The system is designed to offer personalized learning based on cognitive abilities related to the human language process. For this, the proposed CALL system has a cognitive diagnosis module which can measure five types of cognitive abilities. The results of this diagnosis are used to create dynamic learning scenarios for personalized learning and to evaluate user performance in the learning. This system is also designed in order to have users be able to create learning word lists and to share them simply with various functions based on open APIs. Additionally, through experiments, it has shown that this system helps students to learn English vocabulary effectively and enhances their foreign language skills.

  • Performance assessment has been introduced to school education as an alternative measure of the former educational assessment which put much emphasis on the result rather than the process of learning, memorization than pursuit of knowledge, and passive than active study. As for the subject of mathematics, the change of the assessment came to replace multiple choice tests with descriptive- and statement-type tests. This means animprovement on the testing system, focusing on the process of finding out the answer. The main focus, however, is still on the intellectual domain without paying due attention to the emotional domain of mathematics education. The previous studies on the assessment of emotional domain In mathematics have shown that there are stumbling blocks in the application of the assessment, such as the disputes on the reliability, objectivity, and fairness as well as the complicated procedure of applying the results to school records. The lack of the development and supply of the appropriate assessment tools have also been pointed out. Therefore, this study has been carried out with the intention of establishing an applicable standard of assessment on the emotional domain of high school matematics. As a result, detailed standards of performance assessment, which adopt oral examination, discussion, observation, and report have been developed. The problems which are likely to emerge In the course of the application of the newly developed assessment are under study as a continuing research project.
