  • Conventional drug carriers such as liposomes, nanoparticles, polymer micelles, polymeric conjugate and lipid microemulsion for cancer chemotherapy shield normal tissues from toxic drugs to treat cancer cells in tumors. However, inaccurate tumor targeting uncontrolled drug release from the carriers and unwanted accumulation in healthy sites can limit treatment efficacy with current conventional drug carriers with insufficient concentrations of drugs in the tumors and unexpected side effects as a result. Sickle red blood cells show natural tumor preferential accumulation without any manipulation due to the adhesive interaction between molecular receptors on the membrane surface and counter-receptor on endothelial cells. In addition, structural changes of microvascular in tumor sites enhances polymerization of sickle red blood cells. In this research, we examined the use of sickle red blood cells as a new drug carrier with novel tumor targeting and controlled release properties to quantify its therapeutic effects.

  • We have fabricated nanodot arrays by using phase separated (PS- b- PMMA) diblock copolymer film and anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane as templates with hexagonal arrays of cylindrical microdomains perpendicular to the substrate. Pulsed laser deposition technique was used to deposit various kinds of materials including Ag, Ni, ZnO, Si:Er, and Co/Pt onto Si substrates. The size and separation of nanodots correspond to those of the templates used, The density of nanodots was estimated to be $6{\times}10^{11}/cm^2$ and $1{\times}10^{10}/cm^2$ when the diblock copolymer and AAO were used, respectively. In particular, the optical properties of ZnO and Si: Er nanodot arrays were investigated and the strong photoluminescence at 380 nm and $1.54{\mu}m$ was observed from ZnO and Si:Er nanodot arrays, respectively.

  • Diatomite is a silicic porous sedimentary rock composed of diatom frustules, used for filtration aid, filler, absorbent, abrasive, carrier, insulator, and fertilizer. During the calcination of diatomite to improve physical properties for filtration-aid application, amorphous silica is transformed to cristobalite. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy studies were carried out for 17 diatomite samples, showing that 16 diatomite samples contain cristobalite in the range of 6~100 %. Concentration of respirable cristobalite in air is regulated as harmful substances, but the residual cristobalite in food is treated as generally safe substance. The determination procedure of cristobalite content in food was established for managing food safety. Calibration curve of cristobalite filtered on silver membrane were obtained by X-ray diffraction. The lower limit of quantification was evaluated as 2.7 mg. The cristobalite was not detected in the analyses of selected food samples using the established procedure.

  • Anisotropy of stiffiness, from extremely small strains to post-failure strains, of isotropically consolidated air-pulviated sands in plane strain compression was studied by using the newly developed instrumentation for small strain measurements. Seven types of sand of the world-wide origins were tested, which have been extensively used for research purposes. Stress-strain relationships for a wide range of strain from about 0.0001% to 10% were obtained with measuring axial and lateral strains locally free from the effects of bedding and membrane penetration errors at the specimen boundaries. It was found that the maximum shear modulus Gmax was irrespective of the angle $\delta$of the $\sigma$1 direction relative to the bedding plane. However, the normalized Gmax was varied with the types of sand. Furthermore, the dependency of the strain and stress level on the stiffness increased as decreased.

  • In this study, a method for analyzing the collision and interaction between ice bergy bits and a Mark III type liquid natural gas (LNG) carrier was considered, and the structural safety of a ship's hull and cargo containment system (CCS) was evaluated. In the analysis, a constitutive model implementing the strain rate dependant mechanical property was used to consider the typical material characteristics of ice rationally. A relatively simple and easy ice structure interaction analysis procedure, compared with the accurate but complicated FSI analysis scheme, was suggested. When the ice bergy bits collided with ship's side hull under the four assumed scenarios, the structural behaviors of the ship structure and LNG CCS were simulated by applying the suggested ice collision analysis procedure using the commercial hydro-code LS-DYNA. In addition, the effects of the shapes and colliding speed of the ice bergy bits on the ice-structure interaction and safety of the CCS were examined in detail.

  • In this study, an anion-exchange ionomer solution was prepared by grinding poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) in liquid nitrogen for solid alkaline fuel cells (SAFCs). Type of quaternized PPO (QPPO) solutions was controlled by grinding time. The ionomer binder solutions were characterized in terms of dispersity, particle size, and electrochemical properties. As a result, ionomer binder solutions using grinded polymer showed higher dispersion and smaller particle size distribution than that using non-grinded polymer. The highest ionic conductivity and IEC of the membrane recast by using BPPO-G120s were $0.025S\;cm^{-1}$ and $1.26meq\;g^{-1}$, respectively.

  • Although thermoset carbon fiber composite bipolar plates not only have high mechanical properties but also high corrosion resistance in acid environment, high manufacturing cost and low bulk electrical conductivity are the biggest obstacle to overcome. In this research, thermoplastic polymer is employed for the matrix of carbon composite bipolar plate to increase both the manufacturing productivity and bulk electric conductivity of the bipolar plate. In order to increase the electrical conductivity and strength, plain type carbon fabric rather than chopped or unidirectional fibers is used. Also nano particles are embedded in the thermoplastic matrix to increase the bulk resistance of the bipolar plate. The area specific resistance and the mechanical strength of the developed bipolar plate are measured with respect to the environmental temperature and stack compaction pressure.

  • All medicines are poisonous, and there are none free from poison. Thus, all things may be regarded as poisonous. And poison and medicine is the same one of which actions differ from each other. Medicine may be good medicine or poison according to doses, whether chemical medicine or herbal one. Herbal medicine falls into the category of natural materials. From ancient times humankind has Been using animals and plants as food, but on the other hand, chemical medicine is unfamiliar relatively to natural materials. Somecine is unfamilis, absorbed into the human boan, are transformed and help deemicfication. Other medicines protect the gastric mucous membrane and are demulcent, and inhibithemica materials from being absorbed. In some cases, ine is unfamilis function as deemicfiers in combination withhemica materials, and remove the toxicity and side effect caused by drug properties. Herbal medicine causes less side effects, as compared to chemical one, and thus can work effectively. As the case stands, some deem that herbal medicine does not cause problems despite high dose and long-term use because it is nontoxic or low-toxic. However, herbal medicine may be also poisonous though it is used at a very low dose. Even a deadly poison may produce therapeutic results satisfactorily without side effects, on condition that it is used properly.

  • The end plates of fuel cell assemblies are used to fasten the inner stacks, reduce the contact pressure, and provide a seal between Membrane-Electrode Assemblies (MEAs). They therefore require sufficient mechanical strength to withstand the tightening pressure, light weight to obtain high energy densities, and stable chemical/electrochemical properties, as well as provide electrical insulation. The design criteria for end plates can be divided into three parts: the material, connecting method, and shape. In the past, end plates were made from metals such as aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel alloys, but due to corrosion problems, thermal losses, and their excessive weight, alternative materials such as plastics have been considered. Composite materials consisting of combinations of two or more materials have also been proposed for end plates to enhance their mechanical strength. Tie-rods have been traditionally used to connect end plates, but since the number of connecting parts has increased, resulting in assembly difficulties, new types of connectors have been contemplated. Ideas such as adding reinforcement or flat plates, or using bands or boxes to replace tie-rods have been proposed. Typical end plates are rectangular or cylindrical solid plates. To minimize the weight and provide a uniform pressure distribution, new concepts such as ribbed-, bomb-, or bow-shaped plates have been considered. Even though end plates were not an issue in fuel cell system designs in the past, they now provide a great challenge for designers. Changes in the materials, connecting methods, and shapes of an end plate allow us to achieve lighter, stronger end plates, resulting in more efficient fuel cell systems.

  • In this study, PDMS-HNT and PDMS-mHNT composite membranes were prepared by the addition of halloysite nanotube (HNT) and modified HNT (mHNT) to PDMS. To investigate the physico-chemical characteristics of composite membranes, analytical methods such as FT-IR, XRD, TGA, and SEM were utilized. The gas permeability and selectivity properties of $N_2$ and $CO_2$ were evaluated. In particular, the PDMS-HNT with 10 wt% HNT and PDMS-mHNT with 5 wt% mHNT showed the highest $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity and $CO_2$ permeability at $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. Overall, PDMS-HNT and PDMS-mHNT composite membranes improved the $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity compared to that of using PDMS membrane.
