The adsorption characteristics of L-tryptophan of PES-BSA affinity membranes prepared by using electro-spinning were investigated. It was found that the fiber diameters could be controlled by the comparisons of fiber diameters prepared by various spinning conditions through FESEM and Image Analyzer. Darcy's permeability constants, mechanical properties and hydrophobic properties were enhanced since micro-fibers increased by increasing the composition ratio of HFB and BSA. The elution capacity of L-tryptophan in borate-DMSO buffer solution was higher than that in tris-HCl buffer solution, while the elution capacity of A 7906 type BSA was higher than A 8022 type BSA. This is due to the characteristics of BSA type, i. e. higher purity and uniform molecular weight and better pH stability of A 7906 type BSA than those of A 8022 type BSA.
The relative permeabilities, distribution coefficients and diffusion coefficient of some salts which are important components in blood plasma through a poly(HEMA) membrane were measured. The crosslinker which was used for preparing the membrane was tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate(TEGDMA), the weight percentage of the latter was about 2.8. We found that the diffusion coefficients ($D_m$) of the solutes decrease exponentially with increasing molecular weight, and also that $D_m$'s decrease linearly (except urea) with cylindrical radius (a). These facts were explained by a sieve pore flow model. The relative permeability and diffusion coefficient of urea at various temperature were larger than those of other solutes such as glycine, ${\beta}$-alanine, D-glucose, saccharose and maleic acid. The result indicates that the poly(HEMA) membrane might be suitable for hemodialysis application.
Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) are key components to determine electrochemical fuel cell performances, in addition to electrode materials. The PEMs need to satisfy selective transport behaviors to small molecules including gases and protons; the PEMs have to transport protons as fast as possible, while they should act as hydrogen barriers, since the permeated gas induces the thermal degradation of cathode catalyst, resulting in rapid electrochemical reduction. To date, limited tools have been used to measure how fast hydrogen gas permeates through PEMs (e.g., Constant volume/variable Pressure (time-lag) method). However, most of the measurements are conducted under vacuum where PEMs are fully dried. Otherwise, the obtained hydrogen permeance is easily changeable, which causes the measurement errors to be large. In this study, hydrogen permeation properties through Nafion212 used as a standard PEM are evaluated using an in-situ measurement system in which both temperature and humidity are controlled at the same time.

The transport phenomena of ten amino acid molecules through poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), P(HEMA) membrane have been investigated in various range pH solutions. It is found that the permeability and diffusivity of the amino acids through membrane depended on the different shape, size and the charge of them are changed by the pH. The permeabilities and diffusivities of amino acids have the largest value in the neutral solution. In this case, they are diffused through free water in the P(HEMA) membrane and the diffusion mechanism is the pore type. The basic solution have larger value than the acidic it. Whether the diffusion mechanism of the core type or the partition type, it is depended on the effect of side chain of the amino acid in basic and acidic solution.
Membrane characterization methods for aqueous redox flow batteries aqueous RFBs were modified for non-aqueous RFBs. The modified characterization methods, such as ion exchange capacity, transport number, permeability and single cell test, were carried out to evaluate commercial membranes in non-aqueous electrolyte. It was found that columbic efficiency and energy efficiency in a single cell test were dependent on the ion selectivity of commercial anion exchange membranes. Neosepta AHA anion exchange membrane showed the anion transport number of 0.81, which is a relatively low ion selectivity in non-aqueous electrolyte, however, exhibited 92% of coulombic efficiency and 86% of energy efficiency in a single cell test. It was also found that a porous membrane without ion selectivity is suitable for a non-aqueous redox flow battery at a high current density.
Abstract: The surfaces of poly (methylpentene)(PMP) were modified by Af and $NH_3$ plasma treatment, and their effects on permeation characteristics were investigated. The mole ratio of O/C in the surface was increased with Ar plasma treatment and consequently the surface became hydrophilic because of the possible formation of -OH, -COOH and C=O. The surface treated by $NH_3$ plasma also became hydrophilic due to the formation of amine and/or amide groups. The $CO_2$ permeability and its actual selectivity over N_2$ were 182 baller and 6.17 for the optimum condition of Ar-30W-6min, while 144 Baller and 6.13 for that of $NH_3$-30 W-8 min.

Organic solvent resistant hollow fiber membranes were fabricated via a thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method using Polyketone polymer, a material with excellent resistance to organic solvents. The PEG300, DMSO2 and Glycerine called the "green solvents" were used as diluents for TIPS method. The spherulite structure was formed with DMSO2 by S-L phase separation behavior whereas the bicontinuous structures were formed with PEG300 and Glycerine, respectively. The morphology of the PK hollow fiber membranes was investigated using SEM. The pure water permeability and the durability test were conducted to understand the permeation properties of PK hollow fiber membranes. The tensile strength test was conducted for the property of mechanical strength. In this study, the fabrication of PK hollow fiber membranes with various diluents was discussed to understand the correlation between diluent and polymer in detail.
A sulfonated star branched poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) triblock copolymer (SSBS) was synthesized with varying degrees of sulfonation. The effective sulfonation on the butadiene block was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Ion exchange capacity by titration was used to determine the degree of sulfonation. The synthesized polymer observed enhanced water uptake and proton conductivity. At room temperature, the SSBS with 25 mol% degree of sulfonation showed an outstanding proton conductivity of 0.114 S/cm, similar to that of commercial membrane, Nafion. The effect of temperature at constant relative humidity on conductivity resulted to a remarkable increase in proton conductivity. Methanol permeability studies showed a value lower than Nafion for all the sulfonated membranes. Structural nature observed using AFM showed that the membranes observed microphase separated nanostructures and the connectivity of the interionic channels.
In this study, we tried to develop a method of accelerated degradation of the electrode by simply using a electronic loader without using a potentiostat to evaluate the durability of the electrode catalyst. To this end, the durability of the electrode was evaluated by repeating the stepwise voltage change using the self-generated voltage by introducing oxygen without introducing nitrogen into the cathode. For accurate electrode durability evaluation, that is, in order not to deteriorate the polymer membrane, the high voltage was lowered to 0.9 V in stepwise voltage change and the relative humidity was 100% to suppress degradation of the polymer membrane due to radicals. After 30,000 cycles (50 hours) of voltage change, the electrode active area decreased by 41.4%. It was confirmed that the electrode was deteriorated, but the polymer membrane was not deteriorated, that there was no increase in hydrogen permeability, no decrease in membrane thickness, and no increase in HFR(High Frequency Resistance).

The performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) is strongly related to the water flow and accumulation in the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and catalyst layer. Understanding the behavior of fluid from the characteristics of the media is crucial for the improvement of the performance and design of the GDL. In this paper, a numerical method is proposed to calculate the design parameters of the GDL, i.e., permeability, tortuosity, and effective diffusivity. The fluid flow in a channel filled with randomly packed hard spheres is simulated to validate the method. The flow simulation was performed by lattice Boltzmann method with bounce back condition for the solid volume fraction in the porous media, with different values of porosities. Permeability, which affects the flow, was calculated from the average pressure drop and the velocity in the porous media. Tortuosity, calculated by the ratio the average path length of the randomly injected massless particles to the thickness of the porous media, and the resultant effective diffusivity were in good agreement with the theoretical model. The suggested method can be used to calculate the parameters of real GDL accurately without any modification.
