Autophagy is a tightly regulated lysosome-mediated catabolic process in eukaryotes that maintains cellular homeostasis. A distinguishable feature of autophagy is the formation of double- membrane structures, autophagosome, which envelopes the intracellular cargoes and finally degrades them by fusion with lysosomes. So far, many structures of Atg proteins working on the autophagosome formation have been reported, however those involved in autophagosome maturation, a fusion with lysosome, are relatively unknown. One of the molecules in autophagosome maturation, TECPR1, has been identified and recently, structural studies on both ATG5-TECPR1 and ATG5-ATG16L1 complexes revealed that TECPR1 and ATG16L1 share the same binding site on ATG5. These results, in combination with supporting biochemical and cellular biological data, provide an insight into a model for swapping ATG5 partners for autophagosome maturation.
During development lymphoid tissue inducer (LTi) cells are the first hematopoietic cells to enter the secondary lymphoid anlagen and induce lymphoid tissue neogenesis. LTi cells induce lymphoid tissue neogensis by expressing a wide range of proteins that are associated with lymphoid organogenesis. Among these proteins, membrane-bound lymphotoxin (LT) $\alpha1\beta2$ has been identified as a critical component to this process. LT$\alpha1\beta2$ interacts with the LT$\beta$-receptor on stromal cells and this interaction induces up-regulation of adhesion molecules and production of chemokines that are necessary for the attraction, retention and organization of other cell types. Constitutive expression of LT$\alpha1\beta2$ in adult LTi cells can result in the formation of a lymphoid-like structure called tertiary lymphoid tissue. In this review, we summarize the function of fetal and adult LTi cells and their involvement in secondary and tertiary lymphoid tissue development in murine models.

Thermal bubbles find their diverse application areas in the MEMS (MicroElectroMechanial Systems) technology, including bubble jet printers, microactuators, micropumps, etc.. Especially, microactuators and micropumps, which use a microbubble growing by a controlled heat input, frequently involve mechanical and thermal interaction of the bubble with a solid structure, such as a cantilever beam and a membrane. Although the concept is experimentally verified that an internal pressure of the bubble can build up high enough to deflect a thin solid plate or a beam, the physics of the entire process have not yet been thoroughly explored. This work reports the experimental study of the growth of a thermal bubble while deflecting a thin cantilever beam. A physical model is presented to predict the elastic response of the cantilever beam based on the experimental measurements. The scaling law constructed through this work can provide a design guide for micro- and nano-systems that employ a thermal bubble for their actuation/pumping mechanism.
In order to search for the anti-HIV agents from natural products, eighty MeOH extracts of medicinal plants were applied to a syncytia formation inhibition assay which is based on the interaction between the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120/gp41 and the cellular membrane protein CD4 of T lymphocytes. Among them, Ailanthus altissima showed a potent virus-cell fusion inhibitory activity. Repeated column chromatoghaphy of the methylene chloride fraction of A. altissima afforded compounds 1$({\beta}-sitosterol-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside)$, 2(tetramethoxycoumarin), and 3(ocotillone). Virus-cell fusion inhibitory activity of compound 3(ocotillone) was $70.76{\pm}4.09%$ at the concentration of $100\;{\mu}g/ml$.
The effects of UV-B and commercial grade pesticides (butachlor and carbofuran), individually and in combination, were studied on a variety of physiological processes of rice field cyanobacterium Anabaena doliolum. Butachlor was found to be $2-12\%$ more toxic than carbofuran and $4-24\%$ than UV-B on the growth, photosynthesis, lipid peroxidation, membrane permeability, and nitrogenase activity of the test cyanobacterium. Of the three photosynthesis inhibitors, the butachlor-induced inhibition of whole chain was approximately 3 and $21\%$ higher than carbofuran and UV-B, respectively. Although the interaction of the stress factors caused a significant inhibition (P<0.01), it was still less than the additive effect on the parameters investigated, except for PSI.
Tumor cell interaction with the extracellular matrix is defined as the critical event of tumor invasion that signals the initiation of a metastatic cascade. Sesquicillin has been identified as an inhibitor of melanoma cell adhesion to the components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in cultured broth of fungal strain F60063. Sesquicillin strongly inhibited the adhesion of B16 melanoma cells to laminin, fibronectin, and typeIV collagen. It also inhibited B16 melanoma cell invasion of reconstituted basement membrane Matrigel in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that sesquicillin is a new class of nonpeptidic ECM adhesion inhibitor having anti-invasive activity.

Ultrathin polyelectrolyte (PE) multilayer films prepared by the versatile layer-by layer (LbL) assembly method have been utilized for the preparation of light-emitting diodes, electrochromic, membrane, and drug delivery system, as well as for selective area patterning and particle surface modification because the various materials with specific properties can be inserted into the film with nano-level thickness irrespective of the size or the shape of substrate. Since the introduction of the LbL technique in 1991 by Decher and Hong, various hydrophilic materials can be inserted within LbL films through complementary interactions (i.e., electrostatic, hydrogen-bonding or covalent interaction). In this study, it is demonstrated that LbL SA multilayer films based on nucleophilic substitution reaction can allow the preparation of the highly efficient magnetic and/or optical films and nonvolatile memory devices.

Combined analysis is required for the concrete dome and ring beam of containment structure due to the interaction in section forces. In this study, an efficient design procedure is proposed that can be used to determine the preliminary sections of the dome and ring beam as well as a proper level of prestress in the ring beam, prior to a detailed design. The procedure applies the membrane theory of the shell of revolution.

The most profound technologies are those that disappear. Silicon-based information technology, in contrast, is far from having become part of the environment. The idea of integrating computers seamlessly into the world at large runs counter to a number of present-day trends. Ubiquitous computing is not just aiming nomad multimedia. Rather, this computing environment lets us free to use computers without thinking and so to focus beyond them on new goals. In that context, Mom is such a fundamental membrane through which humans can interact with the environment. An embodied interaction paradigm, based on Mom, is investigated. Mom, space. sensing/perception, ubiquitous computing, and interactive technology are some of the key ideas to explore.
Hydrophobins are surface active proteins that are produced by filamentous fungi including mushrooms. Their ability to self-assemble into an amphipathic membrane at any hydrophilic-hydrophobic interface is most intriguing. These small secreted proteins comprise of eight conserved cysteine residues which form four disulfide bridges and an extraordinary hydrophobic patch. Hydrophobins play critical roles in fungal (and/or mushrooms) growth as structural components and in the interaction of fungi and mushrooms with the environment. The biophysical and biochemical properties of the isolated proteins are remarkable, such as strong adhesion, high surface activity and the formation of various self-assembled structures. With the increasing demands of hydrophobins from fungi and mushroom sources, production and purification in large scale is under challenge. Various applications, ranging from food industries, cosmetics, nanotechnology, biosensors and electrodes, to biomaterials and pharmaceuticals are emerging and a bright future is foreseen.
