The cross-sections of continuous multi-span beams sometimes suddenly increase, or become stepped, at the interior supports of continuous beams to resist high negative moments. The three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) was used to analytically investigate the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of stepped beams subjected to linear moment gradient and resulted in the development of design equations. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered for the analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. First, the distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995), and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The new proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.
According to the capacity design concept underlying current steel seimsic provisions, the braces in concentrically braced frames should dissipate seismic energy through cyclic tension yielding and compression buckling. On the other hand, the beams and the columns in the braced bay should remain elastic for gravity load actions and additional column axial forces resulting from the brace buckling and yielding. However, due to the difficulty in accumulating the yielding and buckling-induced column forces from different stories, empirical and often conservative approaches have been used in design practice. Recently a totally different approach was proposed by Cho, Lee, and Kim (2011) for the prediction of column axial forces in inverted V-braced frames by explicitly considering brace buckling. The idea proposed in their study is extended to X-braced seismic frames which have structural member configurations and load transfer mechanism different from those of inverted V-braced frames. Especially, a more efficient rule is proposed in combining multi-mode effects on the column axial forces by using the modal-mass based weighting factor. The four methods proposed in this study are evaluated based on extensive inelastic dynamic analysis results.

The nonlinearity of a cable-stayed bridge results in the large displacement of main girder due to a long span, the large axial forces reduce the catenary action of cables and the flexural stiffness. Therefore, the static and dynamic behavior of pylon for a cable-stayed bridge plays an important role in determining its safety. This study was performed to find the behavior of pylon of cable-stayed bridge for the first-order analysis considering of axial load only and for the second-order analysis considering of lateral deflection due to axial load. The axial force and moment values of pylon were different from the results of the first-order analysis and second-order analysis according to pylon shape and cross beam stiffness when the pylon was subjected to earthquake and wind loads. In the second-order analysis, comparing the numerical values of the member forces for the dynamic analysis, types 3 and 4 (A type) were relatively more advantageons types than types 1 and 2 (H type). Considering the stability for pylon of cable-stayed bridge (whole structural system), types 3 and 4 (A type) with pre-buckling of girder were proper types than types 1 and 2 (H type) with buckling of pylon.
This work aims to study the effect of stiffener ties in the behavior of intermediate length open section Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) Columns under axial compression. A comparative study on the behaviour and strength of Cold Formed Steel Columns by changing the direction of projection of lips (i.e., inwards or outwards) are also done. In this work two types of sections were considered Type-I section with lip projecting outwards (hat) and Type-II section with lip projecting inwards (channel). The length of the columns is predicted by performing elastic buckling analysis using CUFSM software. The theoretical analysis is performed using DSM - S100;2007, AS/NZ: 4600-2005 and IS: 801-1975. The compression tests are carried out in a 400 kN loading frame with hinged-hinged end condition. The non-linear numerical analysis is performed using Finite Element software ANSYS 12.0 to simulate the experimental results. Extensive parametric study is carried out by varying the width and spacing of the stiffener ties. The results are compared; the effects of stiffener ties on behaviour and load carrying capacity on both types of columns are discussed.

This study discusses the inelastic behavior of single-layer latticed dome, composed of tubular truss member and newly proposed joint sections, through loading test on the scale-down structure. The loading test was performed under displacement control conditions, using loading transfer system for the same value of point loads on all joints. Maximum applied load was nearly 1.6 times of the design load, and inelastic buckling occured beyond compressive yeilding in some members. The displacement of structure was maimtained upto the limit of oil jack. The behavior of latticed dome from the loading test was analyzed on the view of structural design practice.
This research suggest method to calculate more accurate shearing and bending force on corrugated steel plate that it is produced domestically. This research analyze limitation of former formula on domestic design standard and existing research. In addition The strength calculation formula on corrugated steel plate was proposed according to result of the experiment and FEM analysis. In this study, the result that compare experiment with analysis using the proposed shear buckling coefficient and limit width to thickness ratio indicate similar behavior. As the result of the research, It is judged that the structural member design and performance evaluation of the corrugated steel plate was conveniently applied.
A new form of construction utilizing structural steel as the boundary elements in ductile flexural concrete walls is proposed to solve the bar congestion problems in such a heavily reinforced region, while maintaining the ductility and energy absorption capacity comparable to their traditional form. Two wall specimens containing rectangular hollow structural sections (HSS) and channels at their ends respectively, and one companion standard reinforced concrete wall specimen with concentrated end reinforcement were constructed and tested under reversed cyclic loading to evaluate the construction process as well as the structural performance. Initially, all three specimens were chosen and detailed with some caution to have approximately the same flexural capacity without change of the original shape and dimension of a rectangular cross section correction. Analysis and comparison of test results indicated that the reversed cyclic responses of three walls showed similar hysteretic properties, but in those with steel boundaries, local buckling of the corresponding steel webs and flanges following significant yielding was a dominant factor to determine the hysteretic response. The monotonic and cyclic responses predicted based on a sectional approach was also presented and found to be in good agreement with measured results. Design recommendations considering local instability of the structural steel elements and the interaction between steel chords and a concrete web member in such a composite wall are presented.
Recently, CFT column has been well-studied and reported on, because a CFT column has certain superior structural properties as well as good productivity, execution efficiency, and improved rigidity over existing columns. However, CFT column still has problems clearing the capacity evaluation between its steel tube member and high-strength concrete materials. Also, research on concrete has examined numerical values for high-strength concrete filled steel square tube columns (HCFT) to explain transformation performance (M-${\phi}$) when a short-column receives equal flexure-moment from axial stress. Moment-curvature formulas are proposed for HCFT columns based on analytic assumption described in this paper. This study investigated structural properties (capacity, curvature), through a series of experiments for HCFT with key parameters, such as strength of concrete mixed design (58.8 MPa), width-thickness ratio (D/t), buckling length to sectional width ratio (Lk/D) and concrete types (Zeolite, Fly-ash, Silica-fume) under eccentric loads. A comparative analysis executed for the AISC-LRFD, AIJ and Takanori Sato, etc. Design formulas to estimate the axial load (N)-moment (M)-curvature (${\phi}$) are proposed for HCFT columns based on tests results described in this paper.

As industry is developed, the faster transportation of freight train is demanded. The optimum design of a structure requires the determination of economical member size and shape of a structure which will satisfy the design conditions and the functions. In this study, it is attempted to minimize the dead weight of bogie frame. From the numerical results in the shape and size optimization of the bogie frame, it is known that the weight can be reduced up to 17.45% with the displacement, stress, first natural frequency and critical buckling-load constraints. The first natural frequency and the critical buckling load of the optimized model is larger than that of the lowest design value. Stress and displacement conditions are also satisfied within the design conditions. From the results, the optimal model is stable and useful for the improvement of railway carriages.

In simply supported composite beams, the neutral axis of the composite cross section is usually located near the top flange of the steel H-shape, so that the top flange does not impart much strength to the member. This suggests that omitting the top flange entirely could be a means to lower the cost of the beam without greatly reducing the strength. However, It is not easy for inverted T-shaped composite beam to construct and to apply continuous beam which has negative bending moment. As a result, it would get more workability and decrease capability of lateral buckling and local buckling, if the bottom flange of inverted T-shaped steel used as a form. Therefore. the objectives of this study are to investigate strength and behaviors of inverted T-shaped composite beam which web is encased by concrete and to grasp bending capacity and efficiency of composite by comparing and analyzing in test piece.
