It was verified at Part Ⅰ of this investigation that there is a minimum wettability between molten iron and graphite, which was preliminarily coated with magnesium, and thus the spheroidization of graphite might have resulted from the lack of wettability between magnesium-adsorbed graphite and iron matrix. Being continued from the last work, the wettability between pure iron and graphite, coated with the various thickness of cerium, are measured at melting point of pure iron in vacuum and 200 mmHg argon gas atmosphere. The result indicates the presence of a minimum wettability at a critical thickness of cerium film as was proved in the case of magnesium. The experimental analysis shows that, the minimum wettability could be attributed entirely to a minimum work of adhesion between liquid iron and graphite at a critical concentration of cerium in the iron-graphite interface.
The mesophase pitch was prepared by adding 1~10 wt% of the borane-pyridine complex (BPC) to decant oil. It was prepared in a reactor held at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in $N_2$ atmosphere. The mesophase pitches were analyzed using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), melting point apparatus, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarized optical microscope. The coke yield, softening point, toluene insoluble, density and content of anisotropy in the mesophase pitches were increased with BPC contents. The XRD profiles did not show any effect of addition of BPC on the formation of mesophase pitch, while the crystallinity of mesophase pitches was increased when the materials were heat treated with boron compound.
The oxidation behavior of Ti-Nb alloys was studied in dry atmosphere. After vacuum arc melting and hot rolling treatment, Ti-Nb alloys were oxidized at $450^{\circ}C$∼$750^{\circ}C$. The oxidation behaviors between matrix and oxide scale were analyzed by SEM, XPS and XRD. Ti-Nb alloys had higher oxidation resistance than pure Ti at $750^{\circ}C$. XPS analysis of oxide film revealed that $TiO_2$ oxide was formed on the top of surface. The weight gains during the oxidation increase rapidly at temperature above $600^{\circ}C$ which obey the parabolic law.
Nanotube morphology change of Ti-Ta-Zr alloy as Zr content increase has been researched using various experimental methods. Ti-Ta-Zr(3, 7 and 15 wt%) alloys were prepared by arc melting and nano-structure controlled for 24 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. Formation of oxide nanotubes are conducted by anodizing a Ti-Ta-Zr alloy in $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes with small amounts of fluoride ions at room temperature. Electrochemical experiments were carried out with conventional three-electrode configuration with a platinum counter electrode and a saturated calomel reference electrode. The samples were embedded with epoxy resin, leaving a square surface area of $10mm^2$ exposed to the anodizing electrolyte, 1.0M $H_3PO_4$ containing 0.8wt% NaF.
In this paper, we studied on the growing characteristics of dendrite structure of melted wire deteriorated by over current. Electric wire was melted by Jolue's heat. By using HSIS(High Speed Imaging System), we found out a lot of melted parts of wire were dispersed and radiated. Electric wire had narrow melted areas in case of short fusing time. A lot of very small dots generated around the grain of copper cross-section and they were changed into dendrite structure. Dendrite structure appeared at the values lower than 2.5[A/sec]. In case of very short fusing time, fusing current was calculated by empirical formula. The Preece equation was not enough to analyze a variety of characteristics of melted wire because it did not consider melting time, atmosphere, etc.
In this study, we investigated electrochemically formed nanotube shape on ternary Ti-25Ta-xHf alloys with Hf contents. Ti-25Ta-xHf (x=0~15 wt.%) alloys were manufactured by vacuum arc-melting furnace. The obtained ingots were homogenized in an argon atmosphere at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2h and then water quenching. The specimens were cut from ingots to 4 mm thickness and first ground and polished using SiC paper (grades from #100 to #2000). The anodization treatments on Ti-25Nb-xHf alloys were carried out at room temperature for experiments. The formation of nanotubular film was conducted by electrochemical method in mixed electrolytes with 1 M $H_3PO_4$ + 0.8 wt. % NaF at 30 V for 2 h. The morphologies of nanotube depended on the Hf content in Ti-25Ta-xHf ternary system.
The purposed of this work was to determine surface charateristics of anodized Ti-30Nb-xTa alloys with Ta content. Samples were prepared by arc melting, followed by followed by homogenization for 12 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. The electrolyte for anodization treatment was prepared by mixing 465ml $H_2O$ with 35M $H_3PO_4$ and anodized at 180V to 220V. The microstructures of the alloys were examined by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and optical microscopy (OM). Surface characteristics of anodized Ti-30Nb-xTa alloys was investigated by potentiodynamic test and potentiostatic in 0.9% Nacl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. It was observed that the changed ${\alpha}$ phase to ${\beta}$ phase with Ta content.
There has been a great interest in the use of titanium for fixed and removable prostheses in recent because of its excellent biocompatibility. However the high melting temperature and chemical reactivity of titanium necessitates casting systems different from those used in conventional casting. The current titanium casting systems are based on an electric-arc design for melting the metal in an argon atmosphere and its exclusive investment. Despite the new developments in Ti casting systems, inadequate mold filling and internal porosity are frequently observed casting defects. Therefore, the study on the fabrication technique including sprue design to solve these casting defects is still necessary. In this study to evaluate the effect of sprue design on the castability of simulated cast titanium crowns, 10 cylindrical cast crowns for each group with four different sprue design(Single group. Double group, Runner bar group. Reservoir group) were fabricated. An impression of the entire casting margin was made and cut at $90^{\circ}$ intervals, and the sections were photographed in a microscope at $100{\times}$ magnification to record marginal discrepancy. The internal porosities of the cast crowns were disclosed by radiographs. Within the limits of this study. the following conclusions were drawn. 1. The overall mean marginal discrepancies for each group were as follows: Double group, $43.65{\mu}m$; Reservoir group, $50.27{\mu}m$; Single group, $54.17{\mu}m$; Runner bar group, $58.90{\mu}m$ (p<0.05). 2. The mean of marginal discrepancies for wax patterns was $10.65{\mu}m$. 3 The numbers of internal porosity showed the most in Runner bar group followed by Single group, Reservoir group, and Double group.
Molybdenum (Mo) is one of the representative refractory metals for its high melting point, superior thermal conductivity, low density and low thermal expansion coefficient. However, due to its high melting point, it is necessary for Mo products to be fabricated at a high sintering temperature of over $1800-2000^{\circ}C$. Because this process is expensive and inefficient, studies to improve sintering property of Mo have been researched actively. In this study, we fabricated Mo nanopowders to lower the sintering temperature of Mo and tried to consolidate the Mo nanopowders through ultra high pressure compaction. We first fabricated Mo nanopowders by a mechano-chemical process to increase the specific surface area of the Mo powders. This process includes a high-energy ball milling step and a reduction step in a hydrogen atmosphere. We compacted the Mo nanopowders with ultra high pressure by magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) before pressureless sintering. Through this process, we were able to improve the green density of the Mo compacts by more than 20 % and fabricate a high density Mo sintered body with more than a 95 % sintered density at relatively low temperature.
