  • The heat transfer characteristics of ice storage system of falling film type using sprial coil is investigated. The experimental facilities consisted of a water tank, spiral coils located above the tank, an upper water distributor, and a circulating water pump. Water is distributed uniformally over the spiral coils and it forms falling thin films. In the process of freezing, ice is formed on outside of the spiral coils through recirculation of tank water. In the process of melting, ice is melted with return water from the heat load, while the water is chilled again and drops into the tank. The results of falling film type of ice thermal storage system are as follows. The highly efficient shower flowrates for icing is near $3{\ell}/min$. Icing rates on spiral coils is rosed while brine flowrates is increased. Lower brine temperature is not only increased freezing rates but. also become higher total icing weight and overall heat transfer coefficient. Smaller shower flowrates is obtained lower water temperature on outlet for a long time. The amounts of quantity can be detected more accurately by measuring storage tank weight.

  • A mathematical model has been developed to describe heat transfer phenomena in a PCM (phase change material) module for development of an energy recovery system. The PCM module, melting point of which is around 1673 K, consists of silicon(96.8%), aluminium(2.7%) and marginal amounts of impurities such as Ca, Fe and Ti. The module is covered by a capsule that consists of SiC(58%) and graphite(42%). Physical properties that are required for model predictions were cited from the references. The apparent capacity method and the postiterative method wert used in the mathematical model to describe the phase changing mechanism. Temperature and velocity of fluid are the major variables in the model calculation. For the gas temperature of 1773 K that simulates real operating conditions, the prediction shows that PCM is rapidly melted to axial direction. However, for the gas temperature of 3000 K that is higher than the real conditions, PCM is melted rapidly to the radial direction. The gas velocity has no influence on the melting phenomena of the PCM except when the gas velocity is relatively low. At the low gas velocity asymmetry of the temperature profiles in PCM is obtained.

  • Two kinds of Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$, the sintering samples and zone melting samples, were heat treated under pure Ar at 95$0^{\circ}C$. The substitution of Nd ion for Ba ion in the Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ before and after the heat treatment were investigated by XRD. In order to know the effects of the heat treatment, the T$_{c}$ and J$_{c}$ of samples with the heat treatment and those without the heat treatment by Ar were comparatively studied. The results show that the substitution of Nd for Ba decreased, T$_{c}$, and J$_{c}$ increased after the treatment under Ar at 95$0^{\circ}C$. The Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ samples were oxygenated under pure oxygen at 30$0^{\circ}C$. From the XRD pattern it was found that the sample with x< 0.4 could transfer from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase after the oxygenation, but the sample with x>0.4 could not make the phase transition even after a long time oxygenation.ion even after a long time oxygenation.ation.n.ation.ation.

  • The operating thermal chracteristics of direct contact liquid-ice heat exchanger was experimentally investigated. In this paper, The effects of Ice Packing Factor(IPF), the inlet temperature and the flow rate of Heat Transfer Fluid(HTF) were stuided in the liquid-ice heat exchanger. Thermal stratification in liquid-ice heat exchanger was established clearly and faster at the higher inlet temperature and flow rate of HTF. At the end of melting of the lower flow rate is cleared the thermal stratification in liquid-ice heat exchanger. The temperature stratification is long with higher value of IPF of liquid-ice heat exchanger. The mean temperature of liquid-ice storage was changed rapidly with increasing flow rate and inlet temperature of HTF. The gradiant of ratio of total energy to latent energy was found higher with increasing inlet temperature and flow rate.

  • In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the evolution of weld pool geometry with moving free surface during low-energy density laser welding process. The free surface elevates near the weld pool edge and descends at the center of the weld pool if d$\sigma$/dT is dominantly negative. It is shown that the predicted weld pool width and depth with moving free surface are a little greater than those with flat weld pool surface. It is also believed that the weld pool surface oscillation during the melting process augments convective heat transfer rate in the weld pool. The present analysis with moving free surface should be considered when We number is very small compared to 1.0 since the deformation of the weld pool surface is noticeable as We number decreases.

  • Numerical simulations of the condition in the iron ore sintering bed are performed for various parameters. The sintering bed is modelled as an unsteady one-dimensional progress of solid material, containing cokes and iron ore. Bed temperature, solid mass and gas species distributions are predicted for various parameters of moisture contents, cokes contents and air suction rates, along with the various particle diameters of the solid for sensitivity analysis. Calculation results show that influences of these parameters on the bed condition should be carefully evaluated for achievement of the self-sustaining combustion without the high temperature section, which can cause the excessive melting in the bed. It suggests that the model should be extended to consider the bed structural change and multiple solid phase, which can treat the inerts and fuel particles separately.

  • Non-steady hot wire method was adopted to measure thermal coductivity of paraffin wax in the phases of liquid and solid for the utilization of thermal energy storage. The instrument was tested with the measurement of thermal conductivity of water at various temperatures. The reproducibility of the instrumetn was found to be ${\pm}2%$, in which the results for water agree with the literature values. The thermal conductivity of paraffin wax varies from 0.177 W/m C to 0.236 W/m C when the phase changes from liquid to solid near the melting temperature.

  • In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the evolution of weld pool geometry with moving free surface during low-energy density laser welding process. The free surface elevates near the weld pool edge if ${\partial}{\sigma}/dT$ is dominantly negative. On the contrary, the free surface rise at the center of weld pool in case of mainly positive ${\partial}{\sigma}/dT$. The predicted weld pool width and depth with moving free surface are 5∼15%$5{\sim}15%$ greater than those with flat weld pool surface. It is considered that weld pool surface oscillation during melting process augments convective heat transfer rate in the weld pool.

  • A computer simulation model of various smelting process for melting waste sand was developed by using energy and material balance concept. This model can predict the coal, flux and oxygen consumption and the volume and temperature of off-gas. The major critical variables for smelting process can be explained by using the analysis of energy and material balance. The major conclusions were as follows; 1. The most important variables for smelting process were high post-combustion ratio, high heat transfer efficiency and refractory protection technology. 2. For saving energy in this smelting process, selection of raw materials i.e coal, flux are very important, espacially using of low volatile coal is very profitable. 3. The treatment cost of waste sand is high and environmental restriction is severe, in this reason we must be concerned in the treatment of waste sand by smelting process.

  • During fuel irradiation tests, all parts of cylindrical structure with multiple holes act as heat sources due to fussion heal and ${\gamma}-flux$. The high temperature is especially generated over $2500^{\circ}C$ in the center of pellet. Due to the high temperature, many problems occur, such as melting of pellet and declining of heat transfer between cladding and coolant. [n this study, it is attempted 10 minimize the temperature of pellet using optimization method about geometric variables. For thermal and optimization analysis or structure. the finite element method code. ANSYS 5.7 is used. In this procedure. subproblem approximation method is used to the optimization methods. Through the optimum design process, the temperature of sealed basket type is reduced from $2537^{\circ}C$ to $2181^{\circ}C$ and the temperature of open basket type is reduced from $2560^{\circ}C$ to $2106^{\circ}C$.
