  • In this article. the specifications of a future container crane for a 18,000 TEU megaship are investigated After studying the transitions of containerships through the past half century, the characteristics of the past and current container cranes are outlined. together with various research trends throughout the world Upon these results, the size and performance of the container crane that will be used beyond the year 2014 are forecast. Specifically, the structure, trolley and hoist mechanism, control method, outreach. backreach, rail gage, loading capacity, stability, durability, and others are summarized.

Faint Dwarf Galaxies along the Leo Large Scale HI Gas Ring

  • The Leo ring in the M96 group is unique in its morphology and size among the intergalactic gas features found in nearby universe. Its ring-like structure of 200 kpc on diameter appears to be orbiting around the M105-NGC 3384 pair with $1.67{\times}109\;M{\odot}$ of HI gas. While the origin of the ring - whether it is primordial or tidally stripped - is yet unclear, the optical and gas properties of dwarf galaxies associated with the gas ring help us to understand the formation process of this large scale intergalactic HI cloud. At the first step, we present the optical catalog of dwarf galaxy candidates in the Leo ring using deep optical images with MegaCam on the CFHT. Image convolution method is used in order to detect very faint dwarf galaxies. Comparing the ALFALFA HI data from the literature, we have identified that 4 dwarf candidates coexist with HI clumps. There are also 27 HI dwarfs with no optical counterpart and 12 optical dwarfs with no HI clump. In this work, we probe the optical and global gas properties of these dwarfs.

  • By the end of 2014, the number of completed and under-construction supertall buildings above 250 meters in China reached 90 and 129, respectively. China has become one of the centers of supertall buildings in the world. Supertall buildings in China are getting taller, more slender, and more complex. The structural design of these buildings focuses on the efficiency of lateral resisting systems and the application of energy dissipation. Furthermore, the research, design, and construction of high-performance materials, pile foundations, and mega-members have made a lot of progress. Meanwhile, more and more challenges are presented, such as the improvement of structural system efficiency, the further understanding of failure models, the definition of design criteria, the application of high-performance materials, and construction monitoring. Thus, local structural engineers are playing a more important role in the design of supertall buildings.

  • Recently, the number of complex construction projects, such as high-density development and long-span mega structure construction, has been increasing globally. Therefore, the construction duration has become an even more important factor for success. Nevertheless, in domestic residential construction projects, it usually takes more time than twice as much as North American cases. The long construction duration causes a number of problems, for example growth of financial costs, fall in productivity, and weakness of competitiveness. If the framework construction duration can be shortened to 3 ~ 4 days, then it is also expected to complete the finish work of building in shorter duration, be led to reduce the entire construction duration, and eventually to save a great deal of indirect costs. For shortening the construction duration, previous researches pointed out that the development of simplified plan design should precedes. But, in reality, lack of experience of new design and innovative techniques tends to be the obstacle to wide adoption of the simplified plan design in construction fields. In this paper, a simplified structural plan design is proposed, and the construction cost is quantitatively compared between when traditional construction technique is applied to the traditional plan and when the duration-shortening key technique is applied to the developed plan.

Improvement of the Code Classification Structure in Piping Material Management for Petrochemical Plant Projects (석유화학 플랜트의 효율적 배관자재 관리를 위한 코드분류체계 개선)

  • The objective of this study is to improve the classification structure of commodity code for piping material management which is considered as the fundamental of commodity code and piping material management system. It enhances the efficiency of piping material management directly or indirectly affecting the engineering, procurement and construction in a petrochemical plant projects. To establish an improved code classification structure, this study identifies the problems of former code classification structure in details, as well as the characteristics of other domestic and global EPC company's code classification structures and presents the improved direction considering the recently mega-sized and specialized projects. Accordingly, to efficiently enhance piping material management, the improved code classification structures have been derived from defining suitable code classification structure for specific piping component, adding more standard attribute, expanding the number of code digits and classifying code hierarchy. The results of applying the improved classification structure of commodity code to on-going project have led to reduce the rate of rework from 4.98% to 2.48% for developing purchase description and also have saved working time for executing piping design by 3D modeling from 6 months by two persons to 4 months by a person which is decreased 67% consequently. In addition, the structures of pyramid code management have resulted to accumulation and analysis of the various piping data for other disciplines such as procurement and estimation team which require commodity code information through the company's material control system.

Economic Integration and Structural Changes in the International Agro-Food Trade Network (경제통합과 농식품 교역의 국가 간 네트워크 변화)

  • This paper examines the characteristics of structural change in the international agro-food trade network with a global trend of the FTA diffusion. By focusing on the centralities and the community structure to identify the agro-food trade network, we use the social network analysis and the trade data contained of 07, 08, 20, and 21 at the 2-digit HS product level among 45 countries over the last 15 years. The main analytical results are as follows: 1) Not only has intra trade network intensified more than inter-regional trade, but also, there is no doubt that inter-regioanl trade by linking has steadily increased. 2) EU countires have the high indices of centrality, which have already been highly integrated. 3) Intraregional agro-food trade network for fresh vegetables and processed food sector in Asia is shown to be strongly integrated. This finding suggests that the processes of economic integration will help strengthen the trade network for agro-food in a culturally homogeneous region. 4) The case of Korea's participation in the RCEP and TPP, Korea's power in the agro-food network tends to be reinforced, especially in the processed food sector. Overall, there is a need for establishment of spatial strategies and policies across the different regions for Mega FTAs.

  • This paper deals with demand surveys for big science and technology research facilities and equipments to advance national S'||'&'||'T research infrastructure. We perform surveys thrice based on applied Delphi method on the future demand of big S'||'&'||'T research facilities and equipments among Korean scientists and engineers. We employ the concept of big S'||'&'||'T research facilities and equipments as follows: \circled1 The operating size of it is equivalent to that of an institute or research center, and/or \circled2 The users in various disciplines are many, and/or \circled3 The application areas or spill-over effects are large, and/or \circled4 The scale and scope of research objects is equivalent to that of mega science area such as earth.oceanography.space, and/or \circled5 The expenses for installing and operating it are to be supported by government, and/or \circled5 The facilities are expected as necessary for international joint research, and/or \circled7 It is necessary for promoting creative basic science and developing creative technology. We ask the respondents to answer the following questionnaire: - How to prioritize the equipments according to the degree of importance\ulcorner $\square$ Promotion of basic science and mega science, the development of the technologies to enhance the public welfare, the competitiveness of industrial technologies, the job creation for the S'||'&'||'T personnel, and international cooperation. - Who should be in charge of acquisition and operation of the equipments\ulcorner $\square$ Industry, Government Research Institutes, Academy, ERC and SRC. - When shall we acquire the equipment\ulcorner $\square$ Within 2000, 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017. - How shall we acquire the equipments\ulcorner $\square$ International Joint Development, Domestic Development, Acquisition from Overseas, - How much will the equipment generate spill-over effects to national competitiveness\ulcorner $\square$ Promotion of basic science, contribution to the economy, supply of S'||'&'||'T personnel, and international cooperation. Species Identification and Genetic Structure of Octopus minor from Korea and China on the Basis of Partial Sequences of Mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (미토콘드리아 Cytochrome Oxidase I 유전자 마커에 의한 한국.중국 낙지의 종판별 및 집단분석)

  • The nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene of octopus groups collected from Muan, Taean, Yesu, Jeju in Korea and Youngsung, Daeryen in China were analyzed for the identification of species and populations. Six haplotypes were identified from the analyzed 60 individuals. All of the individuals (N = 10) from Jeju showed the A haplotype which was not observed from other groups, and could be classified as a distinct group. The analyzed groups could form two separate clade in MEGA4 analysis. The individuals from Muan, Taean, Yesu in Korea and Daeryen in China form a clase and the others from Jeju in Korea and Youngsung in China formed the other clade. The analysis of relationship among the groups showed the same results. Individuals belong to the group A (Muan, Taean, Yesu and Daeryen) showed closer relationship than individuals belong to the group B (Jeju and Youngsung). Although the CO1 universal primers used in this study was useful as a marker for species identification among Octopus, analysis of population was limited because of few variations in the partial sequences of CO1 analyzed in this study. However, it was possible to show the limited gene flow among the groups which is resulted from the spatial separation and differences in their habitats.

A Study on Elasto-Plastic Behavior of Column-to-Beam Welded Connection with 600MPa Class High Performance Steel (600MPa급(SM 570 TMC) 고성능강 기둥-보 용접접합부의 탄소성 거동에 관한 연구)

  • While the recent high demand for mega-tall buildings has led to the development of high-performance and high-strength steels, the requirements for architectural-structure-performance steel have been raised as engineers recognize the potential damage that an earthquake can wreak on a tall building. A 600MPa-class steel has emerged to meet such need, and many studies are currently exploring its practical applications on civil engineering works and mega-tall buildings. The available data on the horizontal-force behaviors of structures built with such new steel, however, are still insufficient. There is an urgent need to look into its design data, especially its toughness, and to compare the plastic strain ratios of column-to-beam connections using high-strength steel and regular steel. One of the first studies on the behavior of a column-to-beam connection using 600MPa-class steel (SM570 TMC), this thesis analyzes such steel's structural performance by conducting a structural test on seismic resistance on a full-scale column-to-beam welded connection with non-scallop and recommended-scallop details. Compared with the previous studies on SM490, this thesis evaluates the weldability of SM570 TMC and presents the latter's seismic design data for use in testing its practical application.

Community structure of Macrobenthic Fauna under Marine Fish Culture Cages near Tong-yong, Southern Coast of Korea (통영 인근 가두리 양식장 지역의 저서동물군집구조)

  • Benthic environments and composition of macrobenthic fauna around the marine fish culture cages were studied to clarify the effect of fish farming near Tongyong from August, 1995 to february, 1996. Sediment grain size and bottom dissolved oxygen under the fish cages were similar to that of a control site, but organic content was higher under the cages. Fewer species were found under the fish cages than under the control site, but conspicuously higher density was obtained under cages. Capitella capitals, Nebalia bipes were dominant infauna, and Asterina pertinifera and Astelias amurensis were dominant epifauna under the fish cage whereas Lumbrineris longifolia and Anphioplus sp. dominated in the control site. Diversity index showed seasonal variation under the fish cages, but showed little variation at the control site. The benthic fauna under the fish cages showed different community structures from the control site. As results, the fish culture cages affected the benthic environment and the community structure of benthic fauna by input of the organic content and biological effects such as dead shells.
