  • This experiment was carried out to identify the proper transplanting time at reclaimed saline land in the southwestern area of Korea from 2006 to 2007. The rice cultivars tested were Unkwangbyeo(Early maturing one), Gopumbyeo(Medium maturing one) and Samgwangbyeo, Sindongjinbyeo, Cheonghobyeo, Hopyeongbyeo(Mid-late maturing one). The results are summarized as follows. No. of spikelet per the unit area was lower at transplanting on May 20 and wasn't different in those of the other transplanting time. The ripened grain rate was high transplanted May 20 in Unkwangbyeo, but high transplanted from June 1 to June 20 in Mid-late maturing Cultivar. The yield of head rice was high transplanted June 10 and June 20 in Unkwangbyeo, Sindongjinbyeo, Hopyeongbyeo, but June 1 and June 20 in Samgwangbyeo, Cheonghobyeo. The protein content was high transplanted early in Unkwangbyeo, Samgwangbyeo, and late in Gopumbyeo, Sindongjinbyeo, Cheonghobyeo, but wasn't differ among transplanting time in Hopyeongbyeo. Considering the rice growth, the rice good quality, the yield of milled and head rice, the proper transplanting time was June 10 in Unkwangbyeo, Sindongjinbyeo, whereas was June 10 in Samgwangbyeo, Cheonghobyeo, Hopyeongbyeo.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of different sowing dates and cultivars on the forage yield and quality of winter rye (Secale cereale L.). The experiment was conducted in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots consisted of two sowing dates such as early (15 September) and late (30 September). The subplots consisted of rye cultivars of five different maturity groups such as 'Kodiak' (Late), 'Koolgrazer' (Early), 'Danko' (Late), 'Homil22' (Medium) and 'Olhomi1' (Early). Dry matter (DM) content at early sowing (19.7%) was higher than those at late sowing (17.8%), while crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) contents at early sowing (16.6% and 61.6%) were lower than those at late sowing (16.8% and 63.1%). Although DM content of early maturing cultivars (Koolgrazer and Olhomi1) was higher than the other cultivars, CP and TDN contents of those were lower compared to other cultivars. The contents of fiber components (ADF, NDF and cellulose) at early sowing were higher than those at late sowing, while ADL and hemicellulose at early sowing were lower than those at late sowing. ADF and cellulose of early maturing cultivars were higher than those of the other cultivars, while ADL and hemicellulose of Danko were higher than that of the other cultivars. DM, CP, In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and TDN yields at early sowing were higher than those at late sowing, and early maturing cultivars were higher than those of the other cultivars. Results of this study indicate that forage production technology in combination with early sowing and use of early maturing rye cultivar could enhance both production and quality of rye.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the varietal and ecological difference of rice in heading date by night illumination. The degree of delay in heading date and days from heading initiation to full heading (DHIF) of rice were in the order of mid-late maturing cultivars (MLC)> medium maturing cultivars (MEC) >early maturing cultivars (EAC) >very early maturing cultivars (VEC). However, the MEC showed significant variation in days to heading; Kwanganbyeo delayed significantly, but Ansanbyeo did not. The comparative sensitivity of different rice ecotypes per lux in delayed heading was 0.09-0.10, 0.14-0.26, 0.16-0.58, and 0.35-0.54 day in VEC, EAC, MEC, and MLC, respectively; the shortest ion Odaebyeo (0.09 day), moderate in Daeanbyeo (0.35 day), and the longest in Kwanganbyeo (0.58 day). Difference of DHFI was 0.-1 day in VEC, -l-2 days in EAC, 0-l6 days in MEC and 6-18 days in MLC under 50-70 lux compared to 2 lux; Daejinbyeo (-1 day), Hwaseongbyeo (6 days), Chucheongbyeo (9 days), Kwanganbyeo (16 days), and Ilpumbyeo (18 days).

  • The agronomic, morphologic and nutritive measurements were determined for ten varieties of the early-, medium- and late- maturing rice from five types of soil in south of China. The results are shown that (1) The higher contents of neutral detergent fibre (NDF), cellulose (CEL), hemicellulose (HC) and lignin (LIG), but lower crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent solubles (NDS) contents were noted for the whole plant of rice straw during maturation; (2) As far as the feed nutritive value, segments (S) is highest, then leaf blades (LB), leaf sheaths (LS) lowest. However, LB and LS are constituted about 75% of whole plant, the nutritive value of rice straw is depended upon the nutritive quality of LB and LS; (3) The dry matter disappearances (DMD) values of different spots of rice straw are different, the eary-maturing highest, then the medium; the late- lowest; (4) The DMD value of different fractions is different, S highest, then LB, LS lowest; (5) The different retention time in rumen, the DMD value of rice straw is different. As time following, the DMD value increased gradually, during 48-72 h, the DMD value achieves close to highest; (6) The grain yield (r = -0.91), plant height (r = -0.87) and full-filling grain percent (r = -0.75) are correlated negatively with DMD value, but the leaf/stem (r = 0.59) and the proportion of stem (r = 0.58) are correlated positively with DMD value. The relations between chemical compositions and DMD value are: Early-: DMD = 7.372 + 0.055 DM - 0.532 CP - 2.487 NDF + 1.143 ADF + 0.214 CEL + 1.456 HC + 0.718 LIG (r = 0.61). Medium-: DMD = 333.927 + 2.026 DM - 0.224 CP - 4.602 NDF + 4.524 ADF + 0.149 CEL + 2.923 HC + 0.035 LIG (r = 0.79). Late-: DMD = 133.284 + 0.282 DM - 3.455 CP - 22.185 NDF + 24.267 ADF + 0.316 CEL - 23.288 HC + 0.945 LIG (r = 0.79). Therefore, it is possible to predict the nutritive value of rice straw on the basis of the agronomic, morphologic measurements and chemical compositions and the relationship with DMD value.

  • Gelatinization characteristics of 111 glutinous rice varieties were evaluated by Rapid Visco Analyzer. Gelatinization viscosity of glutinous rice tested varied with ecotypes or varietal groups: indica, japonica, and Tongil type. Indica rice showed the highest average value of initial pasting temperature. The average values for peak, hot, and cool viscosities were highest in Tongil-type rice, and lowest in japonica rice. Japonica showed the lowest breakdown and consistency, but the highest setback value. Indica was lower in alkali digestion value (ADV), and shorter in gel length after gelatinization thanjaponica and Tongil-type. Glutinous rices tested could be divided into six groups by cluster analysis based on their gelatinization characteristics. Group I-A was mostly early maturing japonica varieties while I-B was mostly indica and Tongil-type rices. Groups II-A and II-B were consisted of very early maturingjaponica, and III-A and III-B included medium or medium late maturingjaponica varieties. Group III-A showed the lowest average values of peak, hot, cool, and consistency viscosities, and also in breakdown and setback ratios. Group I-B revealed the highest values in peak, hot, cool, breakdown, and consistency viscosities. ADV was low in groups I-A, I-B, and II-B, and gel consistency was not different among the six varietal groups. Principal component analysis using seven traits related with gelatinization produced four effective components, and the first and second components were highly correlated with all the gelatinization characters evaluated.

  • To make of basic date for the progressive global brand of Korean rice, we compared with characteristics of Calrose and two Korean rice cultivar, Chucheongbyeo(medium-late maturing cultivar) and Odaebyeo(early-maturing cultivar). General characteristics of rice, pasting property of rice flour by Rapid visco Analyser, determination of optimal ratio of water to rice for cooking by electric and pressure cooker and eating quality(sensory evaluation) of Calrose with that of Korean rice cooked at the optimal cooking conditions were measured. One kernel length of Calrose, Chucheongbyeo and Odaebyeo were 6.00, 4.73 and 5.22 mm, respectively. Calrose showed higher viscosity(195 RVU) in all parameters than Korean rices(Chucheongbyeo 176 RVU, Odaebyeo 178 RVU), of which the values were similar. These data imply that the properties of starch of Calrose may be different from that of Korean rice. In general, it is agreed, in Korea and Japan, that the balance of hardness and stickiness of cooked rice is very important. However, stickiness and overall eating quality for cooked Calrose was significantly poorer than Korean rices. Cooked Calrose did not significantly different in hardness, stickiness and overall eating quality compared with those of Korean rices. Calrose cooked with the ratio of water to rice of 1.4 with electric cooker was less sticky than Korean rices and thus was poorer in eating quality compared with Korean counterparts. Calrose cooked with the ratio of water to rice of 1.3 with pressure cooker had the same eating quality with Korean rices.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of light shading around the heading stage on grain yield and its components of rice. Early, medium, and late-maturing varieties were trected with the light shading of 50% and 75% from the reduction division stage to 20 days after heading date. Heading date were delayed 2-3 days, whereas the mid -late varieties, Sangpung- byeo, and Bongkwang- byeo were no significantly affected. Culm length was increased and panicle exsersion was reduced as the shading treatments become higher, and the degree of the shading effect was more intensive at 75% of shading. The rate of spikllet degeneration was higher at the secondary rachis branches than the primary rachis branch. The early maturing varieties showed the higher rate of spikelet degeneration. Spikelet number was reduced 12-15, spikelet sterility was increased and ripening rate was declined by the shading treatments. Grain yield was decreased by 30-40% at the shading treatment of 50%, and 50% at the shade treatment of 75%.

  • We studied oocyte steroidogenesis in the blackfin flounder Glyptocephalus stelleri as a region-specific species, in the East Sea of Korea during the spawning season. Maturing oocytes (0.76, 0.82, 0.88, and 0.91 mm in oocyte diameter) were incubated in vitro in the presence of [$^3H$] $17{\alpha}$-hydroxyprogesterone ($[^3H]17{\alpha}$-OHP) as a precursor. Steroid metabolites were extracted from the incubated medium and oocytes, and the extracts were separated and identified by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC/MS). The major metabolites produced from $[^3H]17{\alpha}$-OHP were androgens [androstenedione (A4) and testosterone (T)] and estrogens [$17{\beta}$-estradiol (E2) and estrone (E1)] and progestins [$17{\alpha},20{\alpha}$-dihydroxy-4-pregen-3-one ($17{\alpha}20{\alpha}P$) and $17{\alpha}20{\beta}$-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one ($17{\alpha}20{\beta}P$)] in maturing oocytes. The metabolic rate of $17{\alpha}20{\beta}$ was elevated (29.04%) in oocytes measuring 0.88 mm (nucleus migration stage following the induction of germinal vesicle breakdown), but was very low in oocytes measuring 0.76, 0.82, and 0.91 mm (0.42, 0.67, and 2.62%, respectively). From these results, we suggest that $17{\alpha}20{\beta}P$ acts as a maturation-inducing steroid in the blackfin flounder.
