In this paper, a node architecture of WDM metro network for connecting broadband access networks to converge wire/wireless networks. In consideration of the proposed node architecture and network requirements we proposed and evaluated medium access control protocols. We review WDM related technologies of sub-carrier multiplexing and optical components in order to resolve the bottleneck between optical backbone networks md access networks, and a access node architecture sharing common wavelength is introduced. Source-stripping (SS) MAC protocol Is evaluated under the proposed functional node architecture. DS+IS (Destination-Stripping and Source-Stripping) and DS+IS (Destination-Stripping and Intermediate-Stripping) MAC protocols are described to increase the slot-reuse factor which is low on SS MAC protocol. The key function of new MAC protocols regards the optical switch module of proposed node architecture and helps intermediate or source access nodes for dropping slots to destinations of different wavelength group. Thus, slot-reuse factor increases as the MAC protocols reduce the unnecessary ring-rotation of transferred slots. We use a numerical analysis to expect bandwidth efficiency and maximum throughput by slot-reuse factor Throughput network simulation, the verification of throughput, queuing delay, and transmission fairness are compared among MAC protocols.

In wireless communication networks, single-radio single-channel architecture degrades throughput and end-to-end delay due to half-duplex transmission of wireless node and route intra interference. Also, In contention-based MAC (Medium Access Control) architecture, channel contention reduces throughput and packet collision enlarges end-to-end delay. In this paper, we use multi-radio multi-channel architecture which will make wireless node to operate in full duplex mode, and exclude route intra interference. Based on this architecture, we propose a new link metric, ccf which reflects the characteristics of a contention-based wireless link, and propose a routing path metric MCCR considering channel switching delay and route intra interference. MCCR is compared with MCR by simulation, the performance of a route established by MCCR outperforms the performance of a route by MCR in terms of throughput and end-to-end delay.
In this paper, a parallel backoff delay procedure on multiple IEEE 802.15.4 channels and a channel searching method considering the frequency spectrum of WiFi traffic are studied for IEEE 802.15.4 nodes to avoid the interference from WiFi traffic. In order to search the channels being occupied by WiFi traffic, we analyzed the methods measuring the powers of adjacent channels simultaneously, checking the duration of measured power levels greater than a threshold, and finding the same periodicity of sampled RSSI data as the beacon frame by signal processing. In an wireless channel overlapped with IEEE 802.11 network, the operation of CSMA-CA algorithm for IEEE 802.15.4 nodes is explained. A method to execute a parallel backoff procedure on multiples IEEE 802.15.4 channels by an IEEE 802.15.4 device is proposed with the description of its algorithm. When we analyze the data measured by the experimental system implemented with the proposed method, it is observed that medium access delay times increase at the same time in the associated IEEE 802.15.4 channels that are adjacent each other during the generation of WiFi traffic. A channel evaluation function to decide the interference from other traffic on an IEEE 802.15.4 channel is defined. A channel searching method considering the channel evaluations on the adjacent channels together is proposed in order to search the IEEE 802.15.4 channels interfered by WiFi, and the experimental results show that it correctly finds the channels interfered by WiFi traffic.

The release of IEEE 802.15.4e specification significantly develops IEEE 802.15.4. The most inspiring improvement is the enhancement for medium access control (MAC) sublayer. To study the performance of IEEE 802.15.4e MAC, in this paper we first present an overview of IEEE 802.15.4e and introduce three MAC mechanisms in IEEE 802.15.4e. And the major concern here is the Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) mode that provides deterministic access and increases network capacity. Then a detailed analytical Markov chain model for TSCH carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA-CA) is presented. Expressions which cover most of the crucial issues in performance analysis such as the packet loss rate, energy consumption, normalized throughput, and average access delay are presented. Finally the performance evaluation for the TSCH mode is given and we make a comprehensive comparison with unslotted CSMA-CA in non-beacon enabled mode of IEEE 802.15.4. It can validate IEEE 802.15.4e network can provide low energy consumption, deterministic access and increase network capacity.

The MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol is needed for the OLT(Optical Line Termination) to allocate bandwidth to ONUs(Optical Network Units) and ONTs(Optical Network Terminations) dynamically in the ATM PON(Passive Optical Network). With the protocol, the OLT gathers ONUs' informations and provides grants efficiently to each ONU. Two important functions of the MAC protocol is the grant request procedure and the grant distribution algrithm. The latter has the greatest arithmetic portion in the TC(Transmission Convergence) module, occupies a relatively large portion of the overall chip area, has often been the limiting factor in terms of speed, and should be designed to guarantee the quality of service for various traffics. In this paper, we implement the MAC with the FPGA which can allocate grants dynamically according to the queue length information and the number of active ONUs and distribute grants uniformly to minimize the cell delay variation for each ONU. The structure of the MAC scheduler for the dynamic bandwidth assignment has a programmable look-up table. Also, it has a simple structure, the less chip area, and the lower delay time.

This paper presents the window-based permit distribution scheme for efficient medium access control to support multiclass traffic in APON(ATM over passive optical network). The proposed MAC protocol considers the characteristics of QoS(Quality of Service) for various traffic classes. A periodic RAU(request access unit) in upstream direction, includes dedicative request fields for each traffic category within the request slot. The transmission of upstream cell is permitted by the proposed window-based spacing scheme which distributes the requested traffic into several segments in the unit of one spacing window. The delay sensitive traffic source such as CBR or VBR with the stringent requirements on CDV and delay, is allocated prior to any other class. In order to reduce the CDV, so that the permit arrival rate close to the cell arrival rate, Running-Window algorithm is applied to permit distribution processing for these classes. The ABR traffic, which has not-strict CDV or delay criteria, is allocated flexibly to the residual bandwidth in FIFO manner. UBR traffic is allocated with the lowest priority for the remaining capacity. The performance of proposed protocol is evaluated in terms of transfer delay and 1-point CDV according to various offered load. The simulation results show that our protocol has the prominent improvement on CDV and delay performance with compared to the previous protocol.

In order to reduce end-to-end delay in EH-WSN (energy harvestin wireless sensor netowk), medium access control protocols using multi-hop routing technique have been studied. In a real environment, there are many situations where it is difficult to harvest enough energy than the energy consumed. Therefore, it is required to design a MAC protocol that allows nodes to reliably relay data without exhausting power in multi-hop transmission. In this paper, we propose a power-efficient MAC protocol that can select the relay node according to the residual power and the energy collection rate to increase network lifetime.
In wireless sensor networks (WSNs) duty cycling has been an imperative choice to reduce idle listening but it introduces sleep delay. Thus, the conventional WSN medium access control protocols are bound by the energy-latency tradeoff. To break through the tradeoff, we propose a radio wave sensor called radio frequency (RF) wakeup sensor that is dedicated to sense the presence of a RF signal. The distinctive feature of our design is that the RF wakeup sensor can provide the same sensitivity but with two orders of magnitude less energy than the underlying RF module. With RF wakeup sensor a sensor node no longer requires duty cycling. Instead, it can maintain a sleep state until its RF wakeup sensor detects a communication signal. According to our analysis, the response time of the RF wakeup sensor is much shorter than the minimum transmission time of a typical communication module. Therefore, we apply duty cycling to the RF wakeup sensor to further reduce the energy consumption without performance degradation. We evaluate the circuital characteristics of our RF wakeup sensor design by using Advanced Design System 2009 simulator. The results show that RF wakeup sensor allows a sensor node to completely turn off their communication module by performing the around-the-clock carrier sensing while it consumes only 0.07% energy of an idle communication module.

This paper presents a distributed precedence queue mechanism to resolve unexpected transmission delay of a lower priority transaction in a CAN based system, which keeps a fixed priority in data transaction. The mechanism is implemented in the upper sub-layer of the data link layer(DLL), which is fully compatible with the original medium access control layer protocol of CAN. Thus the mechanism can be implemented dynamically while the data transactions are going on without any hardware modification. The CAN protocol was originally developed to be used in the automotive industry, and it was recently applied for a broader class of automated factories. Even though CAN is able to satisfy most of real-time requirements found in automated environments, it is not to enforce either a fair subdivision of the network bandwidth among the stations or a satisfactory distribution of the access delays in message transmission. The proposed solution provides a superset of the CAN logical link layer control, which can coexist with the older CAN applications. Through the real experiments, effectiveness of the proposed mechanism is verified.
