  • Recent advances in energetic materials modeling and high-resolution hydrocode simulation enable enhanced computational analysis of bio-medical treatments that utilize high-pressure shock waves. Of particular interest is in designing devices that use such technology in medical treatments. For example, the generated micro shock waves with peak pressure on orders of 10 GPa can be used for treatments such as kidney stone removal, transdermal micro-particle delivery, and cancer cell removal. In this work, we present a new computational methodology for applying the high explosive dynamics to bio-medical treatments by making use of high pressure shock physics and multi-material wave interactions. The preliminary calculations conducted by the in-house code, GIBBS2D, captures various features that are observed from the actual experiments under the similar test conditions. We expect to gain novel insights in applying explosive shock wave physics to the bio-medical science involving drug injection. Our forthcoming papers will illustrate the quantitative comparison of the modeled results against the experimental data.

  • Cerebrovascular accident(CVA) is a leading cause of death, and severe sequelae, like motor disturbance, mental disorder, dysphagia, recognition disorder, speech disorder(aphasia) often occur. Most of medical cure about CVA sequelae lay emphasis on motor disturbance, so speech disorder(aphasia) has been neglected. But speech disorder therapy is essential for social rehabiltation. Recently, inside and outside South Korea, various clinical approaches and potential medical cures for speech disorder (aphasia) have been researched. In Korean Medicine, papers pertaining to speech disorders have been but a few. In this study two cases of aphasic stroke patients who were treated for speech and language disorders through Korean medical therapy are reported.

  • The main aim of this study was to investigate the sterilization effects of microwave-induced argon plasma at atmospheric pressure on paper materials contaminated with fungi. Plasma-treated filter papers showed no evidence to an unaided eye of burning or paper discoloration due to the plasma treatment. All fungi were perfectly sterilized in less than 1 sec, regardless of strains. These results indicate that this sterilization method for paper materials is easy to use, requires significantly less time than other traditional methods and different plasma sterilization methods, and is also nontoxic.

  • This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate and compare the outcomes of robotic gastrectomy (RG) and laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) for treating gastric cancer. A systematic literature search was carried out using the PubMed database, Web of Knowledge, and the Cochrane Library database to obtain comparative studies assessing the safety and efficiency between RG and LG in May, 2013. Data of interest were analyzed by using of Review Manager version 5.2 software (Cochrane Collaboration). A fixed effects model or random effects model was applied according to heterogeneity. Seven papers reporting results that compared robotic gastrectomy with laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer were selected for this meta-analysis. Our metaanalysis included 2,235 patients with gastric cancer, of which 1,473 had undergone laparoscopic gastrectomy, and 762 had received robotic gastrectomy. Compared with laparoscopic gastrectomy, robotic gastrectomy was associated with longer operative time but less blood loss. There were no significant difference in terms of hospital stay, total postoperative complication rate, proximal margin, distal margin, numbers of harvested lymph nodes and mortality rate between robotic gastrectomy and laparoscopic gastrectomy. Our meta-analysis showed that robotic gastrectomy is a safe technique for treating gastric cancer that compares favorably with laparoscopic gastrectomy in short term outcomes. However, the long term outcomes between the two techniques need to be further examined.
