Methods: The study was conducted with 288 paramedic students in Districts C and D from April 13 to May 4, 2024. The questionnaire was self-reported and collected by sending a URL to those who agreed to participate. Results: The mean scores for the variables were 3.03 for perception of death, 2.92 for awareness of biomedical ethics, and 3.16 for attitude toward death with dignity. Positive correlations were observed between the perception of death and awareness of biomedical ethics(r=.172, p=.004). Negative correlations were observed between the perception of death and attitudes toward death and dignity(r=-.289, p<.001). The factor that most influenced the attitude toward death with dignity was the perception of death(𝛽=-.219, p<.001). Conclusion: Biomedical ethics education suitable for the job is needed to promote a positive attitude toward death with dignity by promoting a positive perception of death and improving awareness of biomedical ethics.

  • Learning objectives for human and society-centered basic medical education to improve physicians' ability to practice in a Korean context were developed by the Korean Association of Medical Colleges in 2015-2016. The task-force committee identified eight domains for medical practitioners: human illness, reflection and self-improvement, patient safety, communication and collaboration, medical ethics, legal issues, social accountability, and professionalism. A total of 172 enabling learning outcomes and 42 terminal learning outcomes were identified by the workshop. The workshop members were representatives from 41 medical schools, the Korean Medical Association, and a scientific group (medical ethics, legal issues, and medical communication). The curriculum for "medical humanity and social medicine" was first published in 2007. The human and society-centered learning objectives that were developed will be revised annually.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the experiences and awareness of Korean Medicine professors towards research ethics issues and curriculum development. Methods: Electronic mails for requesting the survey participation were sent to 531 professors who were listed in the DB of Association of Korean Medicine. Professors who agreed to participate in the survey were connected to the self-administered questionnaire site, and the responses were stored in real time. Professors were asked the experience of research misconduct cases, the necessity, contents and evaluation method of research ethics education, etc. ANOVA was performed to test the differences of ethics education effects among sub-groups of respondents. Results: Of 137 professors who opened the e-mail, 127 completed the questionnaire. Most professors (87.4%) reported to witness the research misconduct cases, and felt the necessity of research ethics education for professors as well as students. 31.4% of respondents preferred the practice-focused course, and 43.3% preferred the PASS/FAIL basis evaluation system. Professors with shorter education career and professors majoring basic Korean Medicine expected higher effect of ethics education than others. For detailed items of research ethics education, 'ethical writing' and 'ensuring research integrity' were prioritized in the aspects of both personal ethics and social demand. Conclusions: In this study, detailed matters of research ethics education in Korean Medicine area were drawn. • The Act on Decisions on Life-Sustaining Treatment has been in effect since 2018 for end-of-life patients. However, only 20~25% of deaths of terminally ill patients comply with the law, while the remaining 75~80% do not. There is significant confusion in how the law distinguishes between those in the terminal stage and those in the dying process. These 2 stages can be hard to distinguish, and they should be understood as a single unified "terminal stage." The number of medical institutions eligible for life-sustaining treatment decisions should be legally expanded to properly reflect patients' wishes. To prevent unnecessary suffering resulting from futile life-sustaining treatment, life-sustaining treatment decisions for terminal patients without the needed familial relationships should be permitted and made by hospital ethics committees. Adult patients should be permitted to assign a legal representative appointed in advance to represent them. Medical records can be substituted for a patient's judgment letter (No. 9) and an implementation letter (No. 13) for the decision to suspend life-sustaining treatment. Forms 1, 10, 11, and 12 should be combined into a single form. The purpose of the Life-sustaining Medical Decisions Act is to respect patients' right to self-determination and protect their best interests. Issues related to the act that have emerged in the 3 years since its implementation must be analyzed, and a plan should be devised to improve upon its shortcomings.
