From this point of view, he had denied the preceding medicine books, since there was no distinction between the food that raise the body and the poison that attack the poison of illness in the preceding medicine books. In addition, Every medicine has the respective results and one medicine treats one disease, otherwise, in the preceding medicine books, one medicine deals with more than one illness and also they have denied that the characters of medicines are cold or hot because they couldn't be proven by tasting or seeing.

  • Objectives : The paper raises an objection to the word '涕' being used to refer to nasal discharge, and proposes a word for nasal discharge upon studying a set of medical books. Methods : The author finds and confirms the dictionary definition of '涕' and studies how they are used differently in medical books. Through this study, the author shows how the word '涕' is used incorrectly and makes deductions for its reason. The author takes a look at the old form of the word '涕', its etymological origin, takes a guess as to the real word that should have been used to refer to nasal discharge, and find examples of instances where this correct word for nasal discharge are more appropriate. Results & Conclusions : In medical books such as Huangdineijing Suwen, '涕' is used to mean nasal discharge, but the word's dictionary definition does not validate such usage. Yugunryeombu (劉君廉夫), in its commentary for Somun, used '?' and '鼻夷' for '涕', and '?' means nasal discharge and used as same as '涕' when its used to mean tear. This is a phenomenon that originated from '弟' and '夷' being used interchangeably which led to the incorrect usage of '?'. If someone were to refer to nasal discharge, he needs to use '?'. '鼻夷' is believed to be the same word as '弟鼻', which is the old form of '?', and it means both tear(pronounced 'Che') and nasal discharge(pronounced 'Je'). However, the pronunciation different between 'Che' and 'Je', and its definition as tear, is divided in later periods into '涕' following the shape of '弟'. Following the shape of '夷', the meaning of nasal discharge remains in '?' while retaining the pronunciation of 'yi'. Therefore, the word '涕' used to mean nasal discharge is an incorrect form of '?', and should all be re-written to '?'.

Aside from that, medical books wrote at that time and relevant records were additionally investigated. Results : King Sukjong cauterized CV12 or other CV12 related acupoints with moxa 21 years out of his 31 years from 1684 to 1714. The cautery period was usually between late January and mid February. He had 100 pieces of moxa for cautery. On the last day of his moxibustion, he cauterized ST36 with moxa. The moxibustion process consisted of the following steps: suggestion or requirement of moxibustion, decision of date and time, and moxa cautery. In 1684, the reason why King Sukjong cauterized CV12 with moxa was to treat his joint pain and nauseous symptoms. The effect can be found in Donguibogam, many other Korean medical books, and other general books at that time. In 1685, he began to cauterize CV12 with moxa to prevent diseases. Since then, most moxa cautery on CV12 had been performed in the same context. Conclusions : For 21 years, King Sukjong repeatedly cauterized CV12 with moxa. The moxa therapy was conducted to prevent diseases mostly. And King Sukjong had a lot of interest in the therapy. For the reasons, the therapy had repeatedly been performed so long.

  • In this study, we research the tendency of medical text publication by examining the period of the great measles outbreak and the period of the publication of specialized smallpox texts. Using the National Institute of Korean History database for the Annals of Joseon Dynasty, the Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty and Bibyeonsadeunglok, we will compare all records of measles occurrence. Measles and smallpox (Majin in Korean) have similar symptoms and treatment methods. In East Asia, when measles occurred it spread to Joseon and Japan, which are verified by records of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty, the Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty and Bibyeonsadeunglok. The medical books related to measles are; Ryuhasinbang, Majinpyeon, Geupyubang, Yimsinyeokbang, Eulmisinjeon, Majingbang, Jinyeokbang, Magwahoetong, Majingibang, Susengsingam, Hongjinsinbang. Measles and Majin are the same disease. During the period of measles occurrence, measles-related medical books were published, and this relation of measles occurrence and measles-related medical text publication is verified by several national records.
