In recent years, hybrid neural network approaches which combine neural networks and mechanistic models have been gaining considerable interests. These approaches are potentially very efficient to obtain more accurate predictions of process dynamics by combining mechanistic and neural models in such a way that the neural network model properly captures unknown and nonlinear parts of the mechanistic model. In this work, such an approach was applied in the modeling of a full-scale coke wastewater treatment process. First, a simplified mechanistic model was developed based on the Activated Sludge Model No.1 and the specific process knowledge, Then neural network was incorporated with the mechanistic model to compensate the errors between the mechanistic model and the process data. Simulation and actual process data showed that the hybrid modeling approach could predict accurate process dynamics of industrial wastewater treatment plant. The promising results indicated that the hybrid modeling approach could be a useful tool for accurate and cost-effective modeling of biochemical processes.
Recent progress in the computational fluid dynamics methods of two- and multiphase phase flows has already started opening up new exciting possibilities for using complete multidimensional models to simulate boiling systems. Combining this new theoretical and computational approach with novel experimental methods should dramatically improve both our understanding of the physics of boiling and the predictive capabilities of models at various scale levels. However, for the multidimensional modeling framework to become an effective predictive tool, it must be complemented with accurate mechanistic closure laws of local boiling mechanisms. Boiling heat transfer has been studied quite extensively before. However, it turns out that the prevailing approach to the analysis of experimental data for both pool boiling and forced-convection boiling has been associated with formulating correlations which normally included several adjustable coefficients rather than based on first principle models of the underlying physical phenomena. One reason for this has been the tendency (driven by practical applications and industrial needs) to formulate single expressions which encompass a broad range of conditions and fluids. This, in turn, makes it difficult to identify various specific factors which can be independently modeled for different situations. The objective of this paper is to present a mechanistic modeling concept for both pool boiling and forced-convection boiling. The proposed approach is based on theoretical first-principle concepts, and uses a minimal number of coefficients which require calibration against experimental data. The proposed models have been validated against experimental data for water and parametrically tested. Model predictions are shown for a broad range of conditions.

Resent advances in computer technology have introduced a sophisticated capability for computing the biological fate of toxicants in a biological system. This methodology, which has drastically altered risk assessment skill in toxicology, is designed using all the mechanistic information, and all claim better accuracy with extrapolating capability Iron animal to people than conventional pharmacokinetic methods. Biologically based mathematical models in which the specific mechanistic steps governing tissue disposition(pharmacokinetics) and toxic action (pharmacodynamics) of chemicals are constructed in quantitative terms by a set of equations loading to prediction of the outcome of specific toxicological experiments by computer simulation. pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic models are useful in risk assessment because their mechanistic biological basis permits the high-to-low dose, route to route and interspecies extrapolation of the tissue disposition and toxic action of chemicals.

The smart farm is recognized as a solution for future farmers having positive effects on the sustainability of the poultry industry. Intelligent microclimate control can be a key technology for broiler production which is extremely vulnerable to abnormal indoor air temperatures. Furthermore, better control of indoor microclimate can be achieved by accurate prediction of indoor air temperature. This study developed predictive models for internal air temperature in a mechanically-ventilated broiler house based on the data measured during three rearing periods, which were different in seasonal climate and ventilation operation. Three machine learning models and a mechanistic model based on thermal energy balance were used for the prediction. The results indicated that the all models gave good predictions for 1-minute future air temperature showing the coefficient of determination greater than 0.99 and the root-mean-square-error smaller than 0.306℃. However, for 1-hour future air temperature, only the mechanistic model showed good accuracy with the coefficient of determination of 0.934 and the root-mean-square-error of 0.841℃. Since the mechanistic model was based on the mathematical descriptions of the heat transfer processes that occurred in the broiler house, it showed better prediction performances compared to the black-box machine learning models. Therefore, it was proven to be useful for intelligent microclimate control which would be developed in future studies.
Under the current African swine fever (ASF) epidemic situation, a science-based ASF-control strategy is required. An ASF transmission mechanistic model can be used to understand the disease transmission dynamics among susceptible epidemiological units and evaluate the effectiveness of an ASF-control strategy by simulating disease spread results with different control options. The force of infection, which is the probability that a susceptible epidemiological unit becomes infected, could be estimated by applying an ASF transmission mechanistic model. The government needs to plan an ASF-control strategy based on an ASF transmission mechanistic model.
In view of the complex geometric structure of the rod bundle channel and the limitation of the current CHF visualization experiment technology, it is very difficult to obtain the rod bundle CHF mechanism directly through the phenomenon of the rod bundle CHF visualization experiment. In order to obtain the applicable CHF mechanism assumption for rod bundle channel, firstly, five most representative DNB type round tube CHF mechanistic models are obtained with evaluation and screening. Then these original round tube CHF mechanistic models based on inlet conditions are converted to local conditions and coupled with subchannel analysis code ATHAS. Based on 5 × 5 full-length rod bundle CHF experimental data independently developed by Nuclear Power Institute of China (NPIC), the applicability research of each model for CHF prediction performance in rod bundle channel is carried out, and the commonness and difference of each model are comparatively studied. The CHF mechanism assumption of superheated liquid layer depletion that is most likely to be applicable for the rod bundle channel is selected and two directions that need to be improved are given. This study provides a reference for the development of CHF mechanistic model in rod bundle channel.

The purpose of this study is to analyze mechanistic reasoning in Fabre's inquires and to develop mechanistic reasoning model. To analyze the order of the process elements in mechanistic reasoning, 30 chapters were selected in book. Inquiries were analyzed through a framework which is based on Russ et al. (2008). The nine process elements of mechanistic reasoning that was presented in Fabre's inquires were as follows: Describing the Target Phenomenon, Identifying prior Knowledge, Identifying Properties of Objects, Identifying Setup Conditions, Identifying Activities, Conjecturing Entities, Identifying Properties of Entities, Identifying Entities, and Organization of Entities. The order of process elements of mechanistic reasoning was affected by inquiry's subject, types of question, prior knowledge and situation. Three mechanistic reasoning models based on the process elements of mechanistic reasoning were developed: Mechanistic reasoning model for Identifying Entities(MIE), Mechanistic reasoning model for Identifying Activities(MIA), and Mechanistic reasoning model for Identifying Properties of entities (MIP). Science teacher can help students to use the questions of not only "why" but also "How", "If", "What", when students identify entities or generate hypotheses. Also science teacher should be required to understand mechanistic reasoning to give students opportunities to generate diverse hypotheses. If students can't conjecture entities easily, MIA and MIP would be helpful for students.

Based on the bubble coalescence adjacent to the heated wall as a flow structure for CHF condition, Chang and Lee developed a mechanistic critical heat flux (CHF) model for subcooled flow boiling. In this paper, improvements of Chang-Lee model are implemented with more solid theoretical bases for subcooled and low-quality flow boiling in tubes. Nedderman-Shearer's equations for the skin friction factor and universal velocity profile models are employed. Slip effect of movable bubbly layer is implemented to improve the predictability of low mass flow. Also, mechanistic subcooled flow boiling model is used to predict the flow quality and void fraction. The performance of the present model is verified using the KAIST CHF database of water in uniformly heated tubes. It is found that the present model can give a satisfactory agreement with experimental data within less than 9% RMS error.
In the past, the development of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) models for quantitating the time course of drug responses was mainly based on two types of models, the empirical effect compartment model that simply accounts for the delay between effect and plasma concentration (hysteresis) and the mechanism-based so-called indirect response model. The first approach traces back to a paper by Segre (1) and its application was popularized by Holford and Sheiner (2); indirect response models were introduced by Jusko's group (3). (omitted)
