  • Process behavior in metal cutting results from the chip formation process which is not easily observable and measurable during machining. By means of the finite element method chip formation in orthogonal metal cutting is modeled. The reciprocal interaction between mechanical and thermal loads is taken into consideration by involving the thermo-viscoplastic flow behavior of workpiece material. Local and temporal distributions of stress and temperature in the cutting zone are calculated depending on the cutting parameters. The calculated cutting forces and temperatures are compared with the experimental results obtarned from orthogonal cutting of steel AISl 4140. The model can be applied in process design for selection of appropriate tool-workpiece combination and optimum cutting conditions in term of mechanical and thermal loads.

  • Controlling particle contamination is important to increase storage capacity as the flying height of a slider in a hard disk drive decreases. Since precise detection and analysis of particles are primary steps of particle control in a HDD, many researchers have used sampling methods. In this paper, we newly designed a particle sampler and conducted performance evaluation of the sampler. Also, we conducted particle sampling from the HDD using the particle sampler and analysis of sampled particles by SEM and AES. Experimental results show that the particles generated by the slide-disk interaction mainly came from the disk surface.

  • Support dynamics are often important in rotordynamic analyses. It may well happen in real situation of machines such as centrifugal pumps or turbines operating on flexible structure. This paper presents the applications of the impedance coupling method and the improved rotor model for including the support effects on the interaction with the rotor. The impedance coupling techniques are based on the FRFs of each substructure. Its dynamic stiffness matrix can be assembled to generate the system matrix, which satisfy the constraint conditions in the connection coordinates. And, the improved rotor uses the simplified spring-mass models as support properties. The equivalent support models are directly incorporated into the finite element rotor model. To verify the suggested analytical procedures, the results are compared to those of the pump system.

  • A theoretical analysis of an annular injection supersonic ejector equipped with a second-throat was developed under the assumption that the secondary flow is choked aerodynamically by interaction with primary flow in the mixing chamber. The predicted secondary flow pressure agrees reasonably well with the measurements. Using the analysis, the compression ratio, the secondary flow Mach number, and the location of the choking point were presented in terms of entrainment ratio.

  • Methods to predict fatigue crack growth are compared in a quantitative manner for crack growth test data of 2024- T351 aluninum alloy under narrow and wide band random loading. In order to account for the effect of load ratio, crack closure model, Hater's equation and NASGRO's equation have been employed. Load interaction effect under random loading has been considered by crack closure model, Willenborg's model and Wheeler's model. The prediction method using the measured crack opening results provides the best result among the prediction methods discussed for narrow and wide band random loading data.

  • A design methodology for control strategy and control structure gives a direct impact on wind turbine's performance and life cycle. A baseline control law which is a variable rotor speed and variable pitch control strategy is introduced, and a mathematic performance model of a wind turbine dynamics is derived. By using a numeric optimization algorithm, the steady state operating conditions of wind turbines are identified. Because aerodynamic interaction of winds with rotor blades is basically nonlinear, a linearization procedure is applied to analyze wind turbine dynamic variations for whole operating conditions. It turns out the wind turbine dynamics vary much depending on its operating condition.

  • In this paper, we address the numerical investigation on the effect of liquid compressibility onto the natural frequency of liquid-filled containers. Traditionally the liquid motion has been treated as an ideal fluid motion. However, from the numerical experiments for the axisymmetrical free-vibration of cylindrical liquid-storage tanks, we found that the relative difference in natural frequencies between ideal and compressible motions becomes remarkable, as the slenderness of tank or the relative liquid-fill height becomes larger. Therefore, in such cases of dynamic systems, the liquid compressibility becomes an important parameter, for the accurate vibration analysis. For the free-vibration analysis of compressible liquid-structure interaction we employed the coupled finite element formulation expressed in terms of the acoustic wave pressure and the structure deformation.

  • The stator tooth is a key component of the electromechanical integrated toroidal drive system. The stator tooth is spiral in shape and the calculation of its displacements is difficult. In this paper, using the coordinate transformation method, the displacements of the stator tooth in the local coordinate system are expressed as the function of the variable in the drive coordinate system. Using the minimum potential energy principle, the equations of the displacements of the stator tooth under the loads are deduced. The displacement distributions within the stator tooth are investigated and the changes of the displacement distributions along with the main parameters are analyzed. This research can offer the basis for the strength and stiffness design of the drive system.

  • This paper presents results of the effect of different bolt tightening sequences and methods on the performance of gasketed bolted flange joint using nonlinear finite element analysis. Bolt preload scatter due to elastic interactions, flange stress variation and bolt bending due to flange rotation and gasket contact stress variation is difficult to eliminate in torque control method i.e. tightening one bolt at a time. Although stretch control method (tightening more than one bolt at time) eradicates the bolt preload scatter, flange stress variation is relatively high. Flange joint's performance is compared to establish relative merits and demerits of both the methods and different bolt tightening sequences.
