  • The mechanical interaction between the fuel pellet and the cladding tube of a nuclear fuel rod is a very important for safety studies as this phenomenon could lead to fuel failure and release of radioactivity. To investigate the ductility of cladding tubes used in WWER type nuclear power plants, several mandrel tests were performed in the Centre for Energy Research (EK). This modified mandrel test was used to model the mechanical interaction between the fuel pellet and the cladding using a segmented tool. The tests were conducted at room temperature and at 300 ℃ with inactive as-received and hydrogenated cladding ring samples. The results show a gradual decrease in ductility as the hydrogen content increases, the ductile-brittle transition was seen above 1500 ppm hydrogen absorbed.

  • Underwater environmental pollution caused by microplastic particles is considered to be one of the most serious problems in many oceans and countries nearby. Previous academic studies or field technologies tried to remove the micro-sized particles are often energy-consuming and costly, so it is hard to be employed for the actual uses. In this study, the mechanism of removal of micro-sized polyethylene spheres (size in order of 100㎛) using a rising bubble is experimentally investigated. It is found that the particles are either affected by bubble wake, thus translocated close to the water surface, or pushed far away by the surrounding fluid flow, depending on their initial position relative to the bubble. By scrutinizing the visualized behaviors of bubble-particle interaction, we draw the governing parameter, i.e., the polar angle between the particle and the bubble, to determine the effective capturing of the particles with a rising bubble.

  • Formation of bound rubber depends on the filler-polymer interactions including physical adsorption, chemisorption, and mechanical interaction. Bound rubbers consist of tightly and loosely bound ones. Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is composed of styrene, 1,2-, cis-1,4-, and trans-1,4-units. Filler-polymer interactions of each components of SBR with fillers, carbon black and silica, were studied by analysis of microstructure of the bound rubber. Filler-polymer interaction of the 1,2-unit with the fillers was found to be stronger than those of the other components and this phenomenon was shown more clearly in the tightly bound rubber.

  • This article reviews recent developments in the emerging field of cellular-level biomedical ultrasonics with the specific focus on the mechanics of ultrasound-cell interaction. Due to the nature of the field at its relative infancy, the review poses more questions than it provides answers. Discussed are topics such as the basic structure of a biological cell, the origin of cell's elasticity, a theoretical framework for ultrasound-cell interaction, and shape deformation of cells and its measurement, Some interesting problems for future study are proposed.

  • Molecular dynamics simulation of nanolithography by AFM is conducted to study nucleation of various defects, and their subsequent development and interactions as well. During nanolithography via AFM, dislocation loops are emitted along the top surface, and resourceful defect interactions such as, formation of voids chain via the motion of a jog, and creations of extended nodes and Lomer-Cottrell Lock are observed.

  • This study has been performed to investigate the stress distribution around defects that behave as stress concentrators and fracture mechanical analysis for cracks initiatiating at stress concentrators. The stress distribution was analyzed using Finite Element Method and non dimensional stress intensity factor was determined by the mean stress method. In addition, stress interaction effects around defects and cracks were compared.

  • The nonlinear free vibration of a nanorod subjected to finite strain is investigated. The governing equation of motion in material configuration in terms of displacement is determined. By means of Galerkin method, the Fourier series solutions satisfying some typical boundary conditions are determined. The amplitude-frequency relationship and interaction between the modes are studied. The effects of nonlocal elasticity are shown for different length of nanotubes and nonlocal parameter. The results show that nonlocal effects lead to additional internal modal interaction for nanorod vibrations.
