  • The flow inside an axial turbomachinery must be unsteady. Rotor-stator interaction by two blade rows influences performance, the generation of noise and vibration. So, it will be necessary to study the rotor-stator interaction for the design of an axial fan in which the axial gap between two blade rows is small. In this study, rotor-stator interaction is investigated by experimental methods. The research fan has one stage which consists of 24 rotor blades and 22 stator blades. Three-dimensional velocities measured using $45^{\circ}$ slanted hot wire probe and total pressure is measured using Kiel total pressure probe between rotor and stator with the axial 25%, 55%, 145% of chord length,. This study describes the influence of rotor-stator gap on the flow pattern, performance and loss. The efficiency curve show that the change of the rotor-stator gap make difference in the efficiency. And, the 3-dimensional velocity distribution show that the potential interaction between the rotor and the stator have a great effect on the flow field downstream of rotor, where there are wake flow. various vortices in hub region and leakage vortex in casing region etc.

  • Inspired by the energy harvesting eel, a flexible flag behind a D-shape cylinder in a uniform viscous flow was simulated by using the immersed boundary method (IBM) along with low-speed wind tunnel experimentation. The flag in the wake of the cylinder was strongly influenced by the vortices shed from the upstream cylinder under the vortex-vortex and vortex-body interactions. Geometric and flow parameters were optimized for the flexible flag subjected to passive flapping. The influence of length and bending coefficient of the flexible flag, the diameters (D) of the cylinder and the streamwise spacing between the cylinder and the flag, on the energy generation was examined. Constructive and destructive vortex interaction modes, unidirectional and bidirectional bending and the different flapping frequency were found which explained the variations in the energy of the downstream flag. Voltage output and flapping behavior of the flag were also observed experimentally to find a more direct relationship between the bending of the flag and its power generation.

  • This paper proposes a refined electro-mechanical beam formulation. Lagrange-type polynomials are used to interpolate the unknowns over the beam cross section. Three- (L3), four- (L4), and nine-point(L9) polynomials are considered which lead to linear, bi-linear, and quadratic displacement field approximations over the beam cross-section. Finite elements are obtained by employing the principle of virtual displacements in conjunction with the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). The finite element matrices and vectors are expressed in terms of fundamental nuclei whose forms do not depend on the assumptions made. Additional refined beam models are implemented by introducing further discretizations, over the beam cross-section. Some assessments from bibliography have been solved in order to validate the electro-mechanical formulation. The investigations conducted show that the present formulation is able to detect the electro-mechanical interaction.

  • A multi-MW wind turbine is a huge mechanical structure, of which the rotor diameter is more or less than 100 m. Rotor blades experience unsymmetric mechanical loads caused by the interaction of incoming wind with the tower and wind shear effect. These mechanical loads are transferred to the entire structure of the wind turbine and are known as the major reasons for shortening the life span of the wind turbine. Therefore, as the size of wind turbine gets bigger, the mitigation of mechanical loads becomes more important issue in wind turbine control system design. In this paper, a concept of an individual pitch control(IPC), which minimizes the mechanical loads of rotor blades, is introduced, and simulation results using IPC are discussed.

  • A high-fidelity model of a tracked vehicle traversing a flexible ground terrain with a varying profile is presented here. In this work, we employed a recursive formulation to model the track subsystem. This method yields a minimal set of coordinates and hence, computationally more efficient than conventional approaches. Also, in the vehicle subsystem, the undercarriage frame is assumed to be connected to the chassis by a revolute joint and a spring-damper unit. This increase in system mobility makes the model more realistic. To capture the vehicle-ground interaction, a Winkler-type foundation with springs-dampers is used. Simulation runs of the integrated tracked vehicle system for vibrations for four varying ground profiles are provided.

  • The stability of turbulent nonpremixed interacting flames is investigated in terms of nozzle configuration shapes and kind of fuels. Four nozzle arrangements - cross 5, matrix 8, matrix 9 and circle 8 nozzles - are used in the experiment. There are many parameters affecting flame stability in multi-nozzle flames such as nozzle separation distance, fuel flowrates and nozzle configuration etc. Key factors to enhance blowout limit are the nozzle configuration and the existence of center nozzle. Even nozzle exit velocity equal 204 m/s, flame is not extinguished when there is not a center nozzle and s/d=15.3∼27.6 in matrix-8 and circular-8 configurations. At these conditions, recirculation of burnt gas is related with stability augmentation. Fuel mole fraction measurements using laser induced fluorescence reveal lifted flame base is not located at the stoichiometric contour.

  • In this paper the CSCM type upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method has been applied to study the ARL-SL19 supersonic/transonic compressor cascade flow. H-type grid was chosen for its simplicity in applying cyclic tridiagonal matrix algorithm along with conventional slip/no-slip boundary conditions. The thin-layer algebraic model of Baldwin-Lomax was employed for the calculation of turbulent flows. The test case inlet Mach No. was 1.612 and inlet/exit pressure ratio($P_2/P_1$) was 2.15. The results were compared with experimental results from current method were compared well in suction surface with the experiments and other computational results; however, not well in pressure surface. It might be due to the complex flowfields such as shock/boundary layer interaction, turbulence, and flow separation, etc. In the future, a proper turbulence modelling and adaptive grid system will be studied to improve the solution quality.

  • A theoretical model has been developed to analyze the jet-edge interaction and the sound radiation. The edge responding to the sinuous impinging jet is regarded as an array of dipoles and their strength is determined by the boundary condition on the edge surface. The surface pressure distribution and the edgeforce are estimated using these dipoles. Then the pressure amplitude and directivity of the sound field is obtained by summing the radiating sounds from the dipole sources. It is found that the effective source is located a little distance downstream from the edge tip. And the directivity of the sound radiation is cardioid pattern near the edge but dipole pattern far from the edge. The theoretical model is confirmed by comparing the theoretical prediction of the edgeforce and sound pressure level with available experimental data.

  • The three dimensional numerical method using actuator disk blade row model is applied for calculating the flowfield interaction between an outlet guide vane (OGV) and a pylon in a typical civil turbofan engine. The static pressure distortion produced by the pylon is decaying upstream but is still felt at the turbofan exit, and hence can significantly affect the fan performance. The OGV amplifies the static pressure perturbation decaying upstream. The calculation results show that cyclic OGV which consists of three types of blades with different exit angles can reduce more than half of the asymmetries of total pressure and static pressure propagated through the OGV with uniform exit blade angle.

  • The interaction of a travelling shock with the shear layer of a flat plate is studied computationally. The Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically on quadrilateral unstructured adaptive grids. The flat plate is installed horizontally on the central axis of a shock tube. The shear layer is first created by two shock waves at different speeds splitted by a flat plate. A series of small vortices is developed as a consequence in the shear layer. The shock wave reflected at the end wall impinges the shear layer. The complicated shock dynamics in the evolution to the pseudo-steady state is represented with the morphological transformation of a planar shock into an oblique shock.
