Modeling and experimental comparative analysis on the performance of small-scale wind turbines

  • This paper deals with the design, wind tunnel testing, and performance analysis of small wind turbines targeting low-power applications. Three different small-size blade designs in terms of size, shape, and twisting angle are considered and tested. We conduct wind tunnel tests while measuring the angular speed of the rotating blades, the generated voltage, and the current under varying resistive loading and air flow conditions. An electromechanical model is also used to predict the measured voltage and power and verify their consistency and repeatability. The measurements are found in qualitative agreement with those reported in previously-published experimental works. We present a novel methodology to estimate the mechanical torque applied to the wind turbine without the deployment of a torque measuring device. This method can be used to determine the power coefficient at a given air speed, which constitutes an important performance indicator of wind turbines. The wind tunnel tests revealed the capability of the developed wind turbines to deliver more than 1225 mW when subject to an air flow with a speed of 7 m/s. The power coefficient is found ranging between 26% and 32%. This demonstrates the aerodynamic capability of the designed blades to extract power from the wind.

  • This research suggested a development of a Data Acquisition System for strain gauge sensor which enables the usage of portable device in the various engineering field that includes, a strain indicator which is frequently used in civil and mechanical engineering, and a GUI function of data acquisition device. The developed system can record 16 channels of strain gauges at a time and its resolution is over 16 bits which can be used effectively in the actual field.

채터진동 검출 및 회피를 위한 가상 동적 가공시스템 구축 (Virtual Dynamic Machining System for Chatter Detection and Avoidance)

  • This study presents a chatter vibration avoidance program for the milling process. Chatter vibration has a negative effect on workpieces and spindle-tools. When chatter vibration occurs, the cutting tool is loaded dynamically, a chatter pattern is generated on the workpiece, and the tool life is reduced. The developed program is composed of various modules such as an FFT analyzer, an impact test analyzer, a chatter vibration indicator, and a spindle speed recommender. The proposed program is verified using an AISI D2 cutting experiment in milling process. The effect of chatter vibration on the machining condition can be simulated by the suggested method, and successfully exploited to avoid chatter vibration.

수막을 가지는 선형 젖음성 패턴 표면에서의 액적 거동 특성 (The Behavioral Characteristics of a Droplet on the Line Patterned Surface Including Water Film)

  • Herein the water film was introduced to the hydrophilic area on the line patterned surface to solve the contradiction caused by surface roughness (high different wettability has advantage to control the droplet but high roughness for that high wettability difference causes obstruction of droplet moving). Thus the droplet on the water film could not be hindered to line direction but restricted to orthogonal direction, effectively. In addition, droplet behaviors according to droplet volume and line thickness were studied. Droplet fell off the line with narrowing the interface between the droplet and the water film on the line. When the droplet fell off the line, the plate angle was designated as a critical plate angle and it used as an indicator of surface capability to control the droplet. As a result critical plate angle increases as droplet volume decreases and line thickness increases.

운항실습선에 적용한 CO2 배출량 저감대책 (Countermeasures for reduction for CO2 emission from training ship)

  • 지구온난화에 대한 심각성이 대두되면서 선박부문의 온실가스 배출에 관한 연구가 전 세계적으로 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 이에 반하여 국내 연구 수준은 기초에 그치고 있다. 본 논문에서는 선박으로부터 배출되는 이산화탄소의 여러가지 저감대책 중에서 운항손실과 투자비용을 최소화하면서 수행할 수 있는 방법으로 전자제어엔진 사용, 트림 최적화, 프로펠러 연마 및 친환경 방오도료의 사용을 선정하였다. 선정된 저감대책들을 운항실습선에 적용하여 시험 운항을 실시하였고 연료소비율에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 각 대책들은 약 1~5%의 연료소비율 저감 효과가 있었고 이를 에너지효율운항지수 산출에 적용하면 약 1~5%를 감소시키는 것을 알 수 있었다. 향후 국제적 환경규제를 제정할 때 우리나라에게 유리하도록 대응하기 위해서는 에너지효율운항지수에 대한 연구에도 지속적인 노력이 필요하다고 사료된다.

  • This paper describes the new modal analysis method to detect the presence of the breathing crack in a general rotor system with disk asymmetry and stator anisotropy. It is proposed that the modal analysis using directional frequency response functions (dFRFs), which, accounting for the directivity in modes, clears the heavily over-lapping of other harmonics occurring from non-isotropic properties in addition to those due to crack, can provide an effective method to detect the modes by a crack. The simulations from the simple general rotor model show that the r-dFRFs (reverse dFRFs) for asymmetry confirms a good indicator of the presence of the breathing crack and the instability is primarily influenced by the shaft asymmetry than the breathing crack.

인공 심장판막 하류 유동의 in vitro 연구 (In vitro study of downstream flow passing through heart valve prostheses)

  • The left ventricular filling flow is now considered as an indicator which can be used for early diagnosing of cardiovascular diseases. Because the understanding of left ventricular flow physics is critical for this purpose, the downstream flow characteristics of the artificial heart valve are investigated using particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. In this study, we investigated the wake characteristics of flows passing through three different artificial valves (St.Jude medical bileaflet mechanical valve. Bjork-Shiley monostrut mechanical valve and St.Jude medical Biocor bio valve). The downstream flow field has remarkably altered according to the different valves. SJM MHV has the flow field similar to the pulsating circular jet and BS MHV has oblique pulsating jet. SJM BHV shows the similar flow field of clinical data of normal heart.

Effects of Formaldehyde to Urea Mole Ratio on Thermomechanical Curing of Urea-Formaldehyde Resin Adhesives

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of formaldehyde to urea (F/U) mole ratio on thermomechanical curing of UF resin adhesives with different F/U mole ratios. Thermomechanical curing of these UF resin adhesives was characterized using parameters of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) such as the gel temperature, maximum storage modulus, and peak temperatures of storage and loss modulus. As the F/U mole ratio decreased, the gel temperature of UF resin adhesives increased. The maximum storage modulus as an indicator of the rigidity of UF resin adhesives decreased with decreasing F/U mole ratio. The peak temperature of tan $\delta$ increased with decreasing F/U mole ratio, indicating that the vitrification occurred faster for high F/U mole ratio of UF resin adhesives than for the one of lower F/U mole ratio. These results partially explained the reason why UF resin adhesives with lower F/U mole ratio resulted in relatively poor adhesion performance when they were applied.

유비쿼터스기반 디지털 수도미터 옥외검침시스템 개발 (Walk-by Meter Reading System of Digital Water Meter Based on Ubiquitous)

  • In terms of water meter reading, the majority of 16 million houses use mechanical water meter in korea. So, a member of the utility's staff needs to access periodically the water meter and the value of the metered volume. However, due to the use of mechanical water meter, many issues have been appeared as cost, time, errors, accessibility, and readability. To settle these issues, we developed the walk-by meter reading system of digital water meter and outside indicator based on ubiquitous. And we could get the characteristics and the economical efficiency for water meter reading system. Thus, this study shows that the system can be widely used to the block system and the meter reading system for stable water supply.

병렬기구형 공작기계의 보정 시스템 개발 (Development of Kinematic Calibration System for a Parallel-typed Machining Center Tool)

  • This research develops a low-cost and high accurate kinematic calibration method for a parallel typed machining center tool. A planar table is used for a mechanical fixture restricting the platform to place at the constrained pose and a low-cost and high accurate digital indicator is employed for a device checking if the constrained movement is satisfied within the established range. The kinematic parameters calibrated with respect to a single plane aren't influenced from the misalignment of the plane. A parameter observability is successfully obtained even through one planar constraint, which guarantees that the kinematic parameters is estimated by minimizing the cost function.
