Objective : Rod-screw fixation systems are widely used for spinal instrumentation. Although many biomechanical studies on rod-screw systems have been carried out, but the effects of rod contouring on the construct strength is still not very well defined in the literature. This work examines the mechanical impact of straight, $20^{\circ}$ kyphotic, and $20^{\circ}$ lordotic rod contouring on rod-screw fixation systems, by forming a corpectomy model. Methods : The corpectomy groups were prepared using ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene samples. Non-destructive loads were applied during flexion/extension and torsion testing. Spine-loading conditions were simulated by load subjections of 100 N with a velocity of $5mm\;min^{-1}$, to ensure 8.4-Nm moment. For torsional loading, the corpectomy models were subjected to rotational displacement of $0.5^{\circ}\;s^{-1}$ to an end point of $5.0^{\circ}$, in a torsion testing machine. Results : Under both flexion and extension loading conditions the stiffness values for the lordotic rod-screw system were the highest. Under torsional loading conditions, the lordotic rod-screw system exhibited the highest torsional rigidity. Conclusion : We concluded that the lordotic rod-screw system was the most rigid among the systems tested and the risk of rod and screw failure is much higher in the kyphotic rod-screw systems. Further biomechanical studies should be attempted to compare between different rod kyphotic angles to minimize the kyphotic rod failure rate and to offer a more stable and rigid rod-screw construct models for surgical application in the kyphotic vertebrae.

Many processes such as machining, injection-moulding and metal-forming are usually operated by hydraulic servo-systems. The dynamic characteristics of these systems are complex and highly non-linear and are often subjected to the uncertain external disturbances associated with the processes. Consequently, the conventional approach to the controller design for these systems may not guarantee accurate tracking control performance. An effective neuro-fuzzy controller is proposed to realize an accurate hydraulic servo-system regardless of the uncertainties and the external disturbances. For this purpose, first, we develop a simplified fuzzy logic controller which have multidimensional and unsymmetric membership functions. Secondly, we develop a neural network which consists of the parameters of the fuzzy logic controller. It is show that the neural network has both learning capability and linguistic representation capability. The proposed controller was implemented on a hydraulic servo-system. Feedback error learning architecture is adopted which uses the feedback error directly without passing through the dynamics or inverse transfer function of the hydraulic servo-system to train the neuro-fuzzy controller. A series of simulations was performed for the position-tracking control of the system subjected to external disturbances. The results of simulations show that regardless of inherent non-linearities and disturbances, an accuracy tracking-control performance is obtained using the proposed neuro-fuzzy controller.

The remeshing is a method to replace a distorted mesh by a new mesh without interrupting the finite element calculation. The remeshing procedure in this paper refers to the rezoning, for which a sm oothing process is developed to alleviate the distortions of mesh. In the paper, an automatic finite element rezoning system with tetrahedral elements for large deformation analysis has been developed. Our smoothing process is composed of two steps, a surface smoothing and a volume smoothing. In the surface smoothing, checking the dihedral angle and projection on surface patch reduced the change of shape and nodes penetrating die. The constrained Laplacian smoothing has been employed for the volume smoothing process. The state variables are mapped from old mesh to new mesh by using volume coordinates within a tetrahedral element. All these procedures have been linked to the NIKE3D program As illustrated in the examples the overall strategy ensures a robust and efficient rezoning scheme for finite element simulation of metal-forming processes.

This paper presents the performance characteristic of a Francis hydro turbine with an inline casing. This turbine is designed for city water supply system. Due to large changes in ground elevation with high points and low points, some systems may experience larger-than-normal required pressures in areas with low ground elevations. One way to dissipate these excess pressures is by the use of an inline-turbine instead of an inline-pressure reducing valve. For best applicability and minimal space consumption, the turbine is designed with an inline casing instead of the common spiral casing. As a characteristic of inline casing, the flow accesses to the runner in the radial direction, showing a low efficiency. The installation of vanes improves the internal flow and gives the positive encouragement to the output power. For the power transmission to the outside of the turbine casing from the runner axis, a belt passage is designed in the inline casing, as its influence, the region after the belt passage shows a relatively low output power. The clearance gap in the runner side space is considered, in which a small volume of flow is contracted into the clearance gap, forming the leakage flow. The leakage flow leads to a decrease in the efficiency.

Experimental study for supersonic co-flowing fluidic thrust vectoring control utilizing the secondary flow is performed. The characteristics of the thrust vectoring of two dimensional supersonic flow (Mach 2.0) are studied by Schlieren flow visualization and highly-accurate multi-component force measurements using the load cells. It is observed that the thrust deflection angle initially decreases and increases again forming a V-shaped variation as the pressure of the secondary flow increases. Characteristics of the performance coefficients of the system are also studied, and the detailed operating conditions for higher performance of the technique are suggested.

This paper presents the development process for a bicycle monocoque frame using bolt fastening. Traditionally, bicycle frames have been constructed with metal tubes joined at their ends by welding. These frames have been brazed or soldered onto metal lugs, forming the frame. Because stress loads become greatest at the joint of the bicycle tube frame, joint construction strongly influences frame design and construction. To avoid the inherent problems of material discontinuity at frame joints, numerous designers have attempted to reduce or eliminate the number of joints in tube frames. Nevertheless, the manufacture of high quality, reliable, one-piece and jointless frames has proven difficult and expensive. In this study, a new monocoque frame adapted to a hybrid bike is proposed. The advantage of the monocoque frame, is theat is has a rechargeable battery system that is built into the frame; as a result, the emotional quality for the customer is improved. In order to estimate the design compatibility compared with that of tube frames, structural analysis is performed using finite element method. A prototype based on a modified design has also been made and stability testing has been carried out.
For the optimal net shape forging of S semi-solid materials (SSM), it is important to predict the deformation behavior and defects of materials. Among these defects, liquid segregation is detrimental to produce products with good mechanical properties. Moreover, to apply a numerical method to thixoforging, it is very important to prevent a liquid segregation during forming process. The liquid segregation phenomena in deformation behavior of semi-solid material with variation of test specimen size were studied. The SSM compression tests were performed by dynamic material test system with a furnace. Stress-strain curves and microstructures of SSM were investigated, and Porosities were analyzed to evaluate the effects of experiment parameters on liquid segregation.

This study describes a new maskless nano-fabrication technique of Si (100) using the combination of nanometer-scale mechanical forming by nano-indenter XP and KOH wet etching. First the surface of a Si (100) specimen was machined by using the nano-machining system, which utilizes the mechanism of the nano-indenter XP. Next, the specimen was etched by KOH solution. After the etching process, the convex structure or deeper hole is made because of masking or promotion effect of the affected layer generated by nano-machining. On the basis of this interesting fact, some sample structures were fabricated.

In the process of draw die design for stamping automotive press panels, the addendum surfaces generated in metal forming simulation software cannot be used in downstream processes such as machining and making draw dies because simulation tools use simple discrete models for the surface geometry. The downstream processes require more precise and continuous geometric models such as NURBS surfaces. Generally, automotive die engineers manually regenerate the addendum surface geometry using the discrete model. This paper presents an automated geometric modeling process for generating addendum surfaces using draft surface models. The design parameters of the section curve for the addendum surfaces are extracted automatically from the draft geometry. Using the extracted design parameters, smooth addendum surfaces are generated automatically as NURBS surfaces. The generated surfaces are $G^1$ continuous with the part surface and the binder surface, and can be used in downstream processes.
