In this study, the apparent contact angle on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces with micropillars was studied. The previous researches showed that the Wenzel equation and the Cassie-Baxter equation were thermodynamically derived for the rough hydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces and generally referenced on the field of wetting phenomena. For the verification of both equations, the apparent contact angle on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces with micro-pillars was measured. In the comparison between the measured and estimated apparent contact angles with the equations, the differences between the apparent contact angles were analyzed. Conclusively, the available range and limitation of theoretical equations were investigated and further researches about the apparent contact angle on the rough surfaces were proposed.

Active regeneration in CDPF requires $O_2$ which regenerates soot at high temperature. However, small amount of NO can interrupt $O_2$ regeneration in CDPF. To verify this phenomena, soot oxidation experiments using a flow reactor with a $Pr/CeO_2$ catalyst are carried out to simulate Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filter (CDPF) phenomena. Catalytic soot oxidation with and without small amount of NO is conducted under tight contact condition. As the heating rate rises, the temperature gap of maximum reaction rate is increased between with and without 50ppm NO. To accelerate the $NO_2$ de-coupling effect, CTO process is performed to eliminate interfacial contact for that time. As CTO process is extended, temperature which indicates peak reaction rate increases. From this result, it is found that small amount of NO can affect tight contact soot oxidation by removal of interfacial contact between soot and catalyst.

This paper describes an improved design model that can be used to configure a non-contact pneumatic device to turn a large sheet at the in-line system. For rotational moving in the conveyor system, the conventional method is to turn the system itself. The improved non-contact pick-up system mainly uses 8 pairs of L-shaped latches and 12 swirl type heads. It is positioned above the upward air flow table. This system performs the non-contact gripping and side-edge contact support in the vertical and rotational directions to hold the self-weight of a large flat sheet. A non-contact air head can exert a sufficient gripping ability at 4N lower than the standard working pressure. The side latches support 60% of the lifting force required. Through structural and flow analysis, the working conditions were simultaneously considered in accordance with the deflection and flatness of the glass.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the load distribution and contact safety factor for the power take off (PTO) gear of a 71 kW class agricultural tractor. In this study, a simulation model of the PTO gear-train was developed using Romax DESGINER. The face load factor and contact safety factor were calculated using ISO 6336:2006. The simulation time was set at 2,736 hours considering the lifetime of the tractor, and the simulation was performed for each PTO gear stage at the engine rated power conditions. As a result of the simulation, the face load factors for the driving gear at the PTO 1st, 2nd and 3rd stages were 1.644, 1.632, and 1.341, respectively. The contact safety factors for the driving gear at the PTO 1st, 2nd and 3rd stages were 1.185, 1.216, and 1.458, respectively. As the PTO gear stage was increased, the face load factor decreased, and the contact safety factor increased. The load distributions for all the PTO gears were concentrated to the right of the tooth width. This causes stress concentrations and shortens the lifespan of the gears. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the face load factor and the contact safety factor with macro-geometry and micro-geometry.

Gerotor is a planar mechanism consisting of a rotor and lobes which form a closed space, namely a chamber. As active contact points between a rotor and lobes are subjected to very high contact stresses, wear in one or both of the rotor and lobe cannot be avoided. Therefore, in the design of Gerotor used in hydraulic motors a compromise between high torque output and contact stress is of great importance and a thorough analysis of design parameters should be conducted to achieve this compromise. In this study, a contact point is modelled as a linear spring in consideration of equivalent curvature to analyze the contact stress. As the contact stress calculation in this problem is a statically indeterminate type, a numerical iterative scheme has been adopted to obtain the solution. To fully understand the influence of design parameters on the contact stress, the relationship between pressure force, equivalent curvature, contact force and contact stress are analyzed. It is shown that the equivalent curvature of the contact point is a dominant factor that affects the maximum contact stress.

Ultrasonic atomic force microscopy(Ultrasonic-AFM) can be used to obtain images of the elastic properties of a subsurface and to evaluate the elastic properties by measuring the contact resonance frequency. When a tip is in contact with the sample, it is necessary to understand the cantilever behavior and the tip-sample interaction for the quantitative and reliable analysis. Therefore, precise analysis models that can accurately simulate the tip-sample contact are required; these can serve as good references for predicting the contact resonance frequency. In this study, modal analyses of the first four modes were performed to calculate the contact resonance frequency by using a spring model, and the deformed shapes of the cantilever were visualized at each mode. We presented the contact characteristics of the cantilever with a variety of contact conditions by applying the contact area, contact material thickness, and material properties as the parameters for the FEM analysis.
An integrated material removal model considering thermal, chemical and contact mechanical effects in CMP process is proposed. These effects are highly coupled together in the current modeling effort. The contact mechanics is employed in the model incorporated with the heat transfer and chemical reaction mechanisms. The mechanical abrasion actions happening due to the mechanical contacts between the wafer and abrasive particles in the slurry and between the wafer and pad asperities cause friction and consequently generate heats, which mainly acts as the heat source accelerating chemical reaction(s) between the wafer and slurry chemical(s). The proposed model may be a help in understanding multi-physical interactions in CMP process occurring among the wafer, pad and various consumables such as slurry.

In this paper, the contact stress and strain distributions in elastomer O-ring seals have been analyzed using a non-linear finite element method. The stress behavior of PTFE materials is assumed as Odgen model because the sealing clearance between the flange and the surface of the O-ring is not small and the sealing pressure of working fluids covers from the atmospheric pressure to high pressure of 15MPa. The contact normal force and stress in wavy O-rings in which is developed for this analysis are uniformly distributed along the flange and the wall of the rectangular groove. And the normal sealing forces are also kept high compared to other contact sealing models such as the conventional O-ring and X-ring, Thus, the FEM computed results indicate that the sealing characteristic of wavy O-rings is food compared with other contact seals.

One of the main causes of severe wear or crack initiation in wheel and rail is the contact stress due to wheel-rail contact. In this paper, the shape design based on more reasonable contact stress analysis rather than a general Hertzian contact theory is investigated in order to reduce the contact stress. The optimal design is performed using the simple 2-D finite element model and its results are verified by 3-D finite element analysis.

In this study, the resistance spot welding process of an aluminum alloy was analyzed through the numerical simulation including the electric contact resistance and the heat generation in the electrode. The finite element model was used to solve the electro-thermal responses in weld cycles. The resistance of the contact area was represented as the contact element modeling, but the thermal resistance between the contact surfaces was neglected. Welding tests of Alclad 2024-T3 aluminum alloy were made not only to get the input data for the numerical simulation, but also to compare the numerical results. The contact resistance was determined initially by the contact resistance tests and assumed to decay exponentially up to the solidus temperature. The temperature distributions and dynamic resistance obtained numerically were in good agreement with the experimental results. Numerical results revealed that nugget growth depends mainly on the heat generated in the workpiece and its contact area. The heat generated in the electrode has, however, only a little effect on the nugget growth, and the heat generation in the electrode-workpiece interface is initially high but decrease repidly.
