Nanobeams are widely used as a structural element for nanodevices and nanomachines. The development of nano-sized machines depends on proper understanding of mechanical behavior of these nano-sized beam elements. Small length scales such as lattice spacing between atoms, surface properties, grain size etc. are need to be considered when applying any classical continuum model. In this study, Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is incorporated into classical beam model considering the effects of axial extension and the shear deformation to capture unique static behavior of the nanobeams under continuum mechanics theory. The governing differential equations are obtained for curved beams and solved exactly by using the initial value method. Circular uniform beam with concentrated loads are considered. The displacements, slopes and the stress resultants are obtained analytically. A detailed parametric study is conducted to examine the effect of the nonlocal parameter, mechanical loadings, opening angle, boundary conditions, and slenderness ratio on the static behavior of the nanobeam.

The microstructure and mechanical behavior of deformed silicon were characterized using transmission electron microscopy and nanoindentation. Structural defects such as stacking faults and dislocations were observed through the diffraction contrast in transmission electron microscopy. The mechanical properties of deformed Si and 111 Si wafer and mechanical behaviors during contact loading were also characterized using nanoindentation. The hardness values of silicon samples were ${\sim}10$ GPa and the elastic modulus were varied with indentation conditions. Elbow or pop-out behaviors were found in load-displacement curves of silicon samples during nanoindentation. Deformed silicon showed 'pop-out' behavior more frequently under the load of 10 mN, which is attributed to the structural defects in deformed silicon.

Fishes detect various sensory stimuli, which may be used to direct their behavior. Especially, the visual and water flow detection information are critical for locating prey, predators, and school formation. In this study, we examined the specific role of these two different type of stimulation (vision and vibration) during the obstacle avoidance behavior of carp, Cyprinus carpio. When a visual obstacle was presented, the carp efficiently turned and swam away in the opposite direction. In contrast, vibration stimulation of the left or right side with a vibrator did not induce strong turning behavior. The vibrator only regulated the direction of turning when presented in combination with the visual obstacle. Our results provide first evidence on the innate capacity that dynamically coordinates visual and vibration signals in fish and give insights on the novel modulation method of fish behavior without training.

An integrated finite element-based model is presented for the prediction of the three dimensional tran-sient thermo-mechanical behavior of the work roll in hot strip rolling. The model is comprised of basic finite element models which are incorporated into an iterative solution procedure to deal with the inter-dependence between the thermo-mechanical behavior of the strip and that of the work roll which arises from roll-strip contact as well as with the interdependence between the thermal and mechanical behav-ior Demonstrated is the capability of the model to reveal the detailed aspects of the thermo-mechanical behavior and to reflect the effect of various process parameters.

The estimation of the strength and other mechanical parameters characterizing the tensile behavior of granites can play an important role in civil engineering tasks such as design, construction, rehabilitation and repair of existing structures. The purpose of this paper is to apply data mining techniques, such as multiple regression (MR), artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machines (SVM) to estimate the mechanical properties of granites. In a first phase, the mechanical parameters defining the complete tensile behavior are estimated based on the tensile strength. In a second phase, the estimation of the mechanical properties is carried out from different combination of the physical properties (ultrasonic pulse velocity, porosity and density). It was observed that the estimation of the mechanical properties can be optimized by combining different physical properties. Besides, it was seen that artificial neural networks and support vector machines performed better than multiple regression model.
For shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) tunnel lining, the segment joint is the most critical component for determining the mechanical response of the complete lining ring. To investigate the mechanical behavior of the segment joint in a water conveyance tunnel, which is different from the vehicle tunnel because of the external loads and the high internal water pressure during the tunnel's service life, full-scale joint tests were conducted. The main advantage of the joint tests over previous ones was the definiteness of the loads applied to the joints using a unique testing facility and the acquisition of the mechanical behavior of actual joints. Furthermore, based on the test results and the theoretical analysis, a mechanical model of segment joints has been proposed, which consists of all important influencing factors, including the elastic-plastic behavior of concrete, the pre-tightening force of the bolts and the deformations of all joint components, i.e., concrete blocks, bolts and cast iron panels. Finally, the proposed mechanical model of segment joints has been verified by the aforementioned full-scale joint tests.
Continuous fiber ceramic composites (CFCCs) have advantages over monolithic ceramics : Silicon Nitride composites are not well used for application because of their low fracture toughness and fracture strength, but CFCCs exhibit increased toughness for damage tolerance, and relatively high stiffness in spite of low specific weight. Thus it is important to characterize the fracture resistance and properties of new CFCCs materials. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out for mechanical properties and the fracture resistance behavior of a SCS6 fiber reinforced Si$_3$N$_4$ matrix CFCC was evaluated. The results indicated that CFCC composite exhibit a rising R curve behavior in flexural test. The fracture toughness was about 4.8 MPa$.$m$\^$1/2 , which resulted in a higher value of the fracture toughness because of fiber bridging. Mechanical properties as like the elastic modulus, proportional limit and the ultimate strength in a flexural test are greater than those in a tensile test. Also a numerical modeling of failure process was accomplished for a flexural test. This numerical results provided a good simulation of the cumulative fracture process of the fiber and matrix in CFCCs.

Recently, fiber-reinforced composites have been widely used in various industrials fields. In this study, the mechanical behavior, especially fracture behavior, of biomimetic fiber-reinforced composites subjected to pressure loading was analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA). The fiber alignments in the biomimetic composites formed a helicoidal structure, wherein a stacking sequence involved a gradual rotation of each ply in the multi-layered laminated composites. For comparison, cross-ply composite samples with fibers arranged at 0° and 90° were prepared and analyzed. In addition, the mechanical behavior was analyzed based on combinations of the stacking sequence of carbon-fiber composites and glass-fiber composites. The FEA results showed that, when compared with the cross-ply samples, the mechanical properties of the biomimetic composites were considerably improved under pressure loading, which was applied to one side of the composites. Thus, the biomimetic helicoidal structure significantly improved the mechanical properties of the composites. Placing materials having high elasticity and strength in the outermost layers (the layer of the side on which pressure was applied and the opposite side layer) of the composites also significantly contributed to improving the mechanical properties of the composites.
The mechanical properties of biological materials depend on numerous factors. The majority of these relationships are still unknown today, especially with regard to their quantitative characteristics. The reason is that biological materials constitute biomechanical systems of very complex construction, whose behavior cannot be characterized by simple physical constants, as for example can that of engineering materials. The objectives of this investigation were to determine the compression creep and recovery properties of rice stalks at various levels of applied load The compression creep and recovery behavior of the rice stalk could be predicted precisely by rheological model which approached closely to the measured values. But the coefficients of the Burgers recovery model were different from those of the creep model. The Steady state creep behavior occurred at the higher level of force and the logarithmic creep behavior occurred at the lower level of force. The mechanical model being expected the creep behavior in relation with the level of applied load, which was well explained that the rice stalk might be visco-elastic material.
Micromechanics is a technique for the analysis of composites or heterogeneous materials which focuses on the components of the intended structure. Each one of the components can exhibit isotropic behavior, but the microstructure characteristics of the heterogeneous material result in the anisotropic behavior of the structure. In this research, the general mechanical properties of a 3D anisotropic and heterogeneous Representative Volume Element (RVE), have been determined by applying periodic boundary conditions (PBCs), using the Asymptotic Homogenization Theory (AHT) and strain energy. In order to use the homogenization theory and apply the periodic boundary conditions, the ABAQUS scripting interface (ASI) has been used along with the Python programming language. The results have been compared with those of the Homogeneous Boundary Conditions method, which leads to an overestimation of the effective mechanical properties. According to the results, applying homogenous boundary conditions results in a 33% and 13% increase in the shear moduli G23 and G12, respectively. In polymeric composites, the fibers have linear and brittle behavior, while the resin exhibits a non-linear behavior. Therefore, the nonlinear effects of resin on the mechanical properties of the composite material is studied using a user-defined subroutine in Fortran (USDFLD). The non-linear shear stress-strain behavior of unidirectional composite laminates has been obtained. Results indicate that at arbitrary constant stress as 80 MPa in-plane shear modulus, G12, experienced a 47%, 41% and 31% reduction at the fiber volume fraction of 30%, 50% and 70%, compared to the linear assumption. The results of this study are in good agreement with the analytical and experimental results available in the literature.
