  • Smaller size and higher integration of electronic systems make narrower interconnect pitch not only in chip-level but also in package-level. Moreover electronic systems are required to operate in harsher conditions, that is, higher current / voltage, elevated temperature/humidity, and complex chemical contaminants. Under these severe circumstances, electronic components respond to applied voltages by electrochemically ionization of metals and conducting filament forms between anode and cathode across a nonmetallic medium. A Study on Characteristics of the Electrochemical Corrosion of Weld Zone for Refrigerating and Heating Systems Pipe (냉난방용 배관 용접부의 전기화학적 부식특성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper was studied on the electrochemical corrosion characteristics of weld zone for refrigerating and heating systems pipe. Austenitic stainless steel is widely applied to various fields of industry, because it is good to corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. But STS 304 is reliable to sensitization by heat cycle on welding. Therefore, in this study, electrochemical polarization test of STS 304 steel pipe manufactured by arc welding in tap water was carried out. And then polarization resistance behavior, uniform and local corrosion behaviors of base metal(BM), weld metal(WM) and heat affected zone(HAZ) for STS 304 pipe were investigated. The corrosion current density of STS 304 steel pipe is high in order of BM(153nA/cm2) < WM(614nA/cm2) < HAZ ($1.675{\mu}A/cm2$). The pitting potential of HAZ(238mV/SCE) for STS 304 is lower than BM(1206mV/SCE) and WM(369mV/SCE). Therefore, the local corrosion like pitting corrosion, galvanic corrosion and crevice corrosion of HAZ for STS 304 is more sensitive than BM and WM.

  • Li-ion batteries are energy sources that are widely used in applications such as notebooks, cellular phones, power tools, and vehicles. They are devices in which stored chemical energy is changed to electrical energy by electrochemical reactions. They have a high energy density, small size, and are lightweight. In particular, power tools and vehicles require high charge/discharge rates. Therefore, in this paper, we perform electrochemical simulations using a commercial finite-element analysis program to determine the high discharge-rate characteristics of Li-ion cells. In addition, by performing high discharge-rate simulations, we found that the limited discharge current was 63 A. Based on the results obtained, we investigate the behavior of Li-ion cells with a high rate of discharge.

  • Coal modified by acid treatment was investigated to analyze the correlation between the cell performance and electrochemical parameters in a direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC). The fuels were subjected to thermogravimetry analysis, gas adsorption test, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the fuel properties and surface characteristics. After the treatment of raw coal, the thermal reactivity of the treated fuels increased, and the specific surface area decreased, though the mean pore diameters of three fuels were similar. The coal treated by $HNO_3$ showed the highest ratio of oxygen to carbon, and also an increase in the surface oxygen groups on the fuel surface. Through comparison between the fuel surface properties and electrochemical performance, it was confirmed that the surface oxygen groups have an influence on the improvement in the DCFC performance.

  • Small FRP(fiber-reinforced polymer) fishing ships have numerous problems with the point of the environmental and recycling perspectives. In light of these aspects, aluminum can be used as a material for ship building. It is environmental friendly, easy to recycle, and provides a high added value to fishing boats. In this paper, we report on mechanical and electrochemical characteristics of welding parts for friction stir welded 5456-H116 Al alloy. In friction stir welded at various traveling speeds under the rotation speed of 500 RPM, the best characteristics presented in traveling speed of 15mm/min. The anodic polarizations of base metal and welding metal were observed tendency which current density from the open circuit potential suddenly increase. The cathodic polarization presented concentrated polarization caused by the dissolved oxygen reduction reaction and activation polarization caused by hydrogen generation. From result of Tafel analysis, the corrosion potential of 5456 alloy(Base metal) was lower than that of friction stir welded part, as were its corrosion current densities.

Heat transport characteristics by heat generation of electrochemical reactions in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (고분자전해질 연료전지에서 전기화학반응 열생성에 의한 열전달특성)

  • In proton exchange membrane fuel cell, the heat is generated at the catalyst layer as result of exothermic electrochemical reaction. This heat increases temperature of gas diffusion layer and membrane whose conductivity is very sensitive to humidity, function of temperature. So it is very important to analysis heat transfer through fuel cell to maintain temperature at specified range. In this paper numerical simulation was done including reversible, irreversible, ionic resistance, water formation loss to source term of energy equation. Results show that irreversible and water formation loss contributes mainly to energy source term and as current density increases, all of energy source terms become increased and Nusselt number is increased as results of more heat generation. Particularly irreversible loss is found to be predominant among the all energy source and water formation at cathode channel influences the temperature distribution of fuel cell greatly.

Investigation of Corrosion Characteristics with Zn, PTFE Hybrid Coating for SS400 in Sea Water (Zn, PTFE 복합 코팅에 의한 SS400 강의 해수 부식 특성 변화 연구)

  • The severe corrosion environment makes the steel product lifecycle short while Cu-alloys with anti-corrosion characteristic used in sea water are too expensive. This study shows that the Cu-alloy(Cu-37.25% Zn-0.67%Al) used in sea water environment can be superseded by SS400 with various coating process, evaluating electrochemical characteristics. Three coating processes were applied to SS400 such as PTFE + Zn coaing, Zn + PTFE coating and only Zn electrogalvanizing coaing. Various electrochemical experiments such as open circuit potential measurments, potentiodynamic polarization tests and analyses of Tafel constants. Mechanical properties were also measured by tensile test and hardness tests. As a result, Zn + PTFE coating for SS400 steel presented the excellent anti-corrosion characteristic in sea water.

  • The covalently cross-linked sulfonated polyetheretherketone (CL-SPEEK) membrane was prepared by four-step synthesis of sulfonation-sulfochlorination, partial reduction, lithiation, and cross-linking, and its electrochemical and mechanical properties were investigated for water electrolysis application. The prepared ion exchange membranes showed good electrochemical and mechanical properties; proton conductivity of 0.116 S/cm at $80^{\circ}C$, water uptake of 44.6%, ion exchange capacity of 1.75 meq/g-dry-memb., tensile strength of 64.25 MPa and elongation of 61.11%. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with homemade membranes were prepared by non-equilibrium impregnation-reduction (I-R) method. Especially, the electrochemical surface area (ESA) and roughness factor of CL-SPEEK electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry method were 23.46 $m^2/g$ and 307.3 $cm^2-Pt/cm^2$, respectively. The prepared MEA was used in the unit cell of water electrolysis and the cell voltage was 1.81 V at 1 A/$cm^2$ and $80^{\circ}C$, with platinum loadings of 1.31 mg/$cm^2$.

  • [ $PSCF3737(Pr_{0.3}Sr_{0.7}Co_{0.3}Fe_{0.7}O_3)$ ] is a good candidate cathode material for IT-SOFC(intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell) because of high MIEC(mixed ionic electronic conductor) conductivity. In this study, the characteristics of PSCF3737 was investigated and optimizations of sintering temperature and thickness for $PSCF3737(Pr_{0.3}Sr_{0.7}Co_{0.3}Fe_{0.7}O_3)$ was carried out. Impedance responses were divided into two parts by frequency region. Middle frequency part (${\sim}10^2\;Hz$) was concerned with oxygen reduction reaction on surface and low frequency part (${\sim}10^{-1}\;Hz$) was related with oxygen diffusion. The reasonable sintering temperature and thickness of cathode were $1200^{\circ}C$ and about $27\;{\mu}m$ with regard to EIS(electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). ASR(areas specific resistance) of optimized cathode is $0.115\;{\Omega}\;cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$.

Nickel Phosphide Electroless Coating on Cellulose Paper for Lithium Battery Anode

  • Here we report our preliminary results about nickel phosphide (Ni-P) electroless coating on the surface of cellulose paper (CP) and its feasibility as the anode for lithium (Li) batteries. In particular, CP can act as a flexible skeleton to maintain the mechanical structure, and the Ni-P film can play the roles of both the anode substrate and the active material in Li batteries. Ni-P films with different P contents were plated uniformly and compactly on the microfiber strands of CP. When they were tested as the anode for Li battery, their theoretical capacity per physical area was comparable to or higher than hypothetical pure graphite and P film electrodes having the same thickness. After the large irreversible capacity loss in the first charge/discharge process, the samples showed relatively reversible charge/discharge characteristics. All samples showed no separation of the plating layer and no detectable micro-cracks after cycling. When the charge cut-off voltage was adjusted, their capacity retention could be improved significantly. The electrochemical result was just about the same before and after mechanical bending with respect to the overall shape of voltage curve and capacity.
