The ventilation effectiveness is evaluated as a function of air exchange rate and supply / extract locations in a simplified model chamber using a tracer gas technique of CO$_2$ gas injected into a supply duct. Ventilation systems consist of supply and extract fans, a CO$_2$gas generator, a CO$_2$gas analyzer and a test chamber. The ventilation effectiveness is evaluated using a step-down method based on ASTM Standard E741-83. The room mean age of the model chamber is decreased with increasing air exchange rate fanged from 6to 10 air changes per hour. The ventilation effectiveness of the mechanical inlet/natural extract system is better than that of the mechanical extract system.
Background: This study was conducted to provide background information for the proper management of radon contamination in apartments using mechanical ventilation facilities in residential environments. Objectives: To this end, this study compared and evaluated changes in radon concentrations based on different operating intensities of mechanical ventilation with or without natural ventilation. Methods: For the continuous measurement of radon concentrations, an RAD7 instrument was installed in four apartments equipped with a ventilation system. The measurements were done for comparison of ventilation types and different ventilation intensities ("high", "middle", "low"). Results: The results confirmed that both mechanical and natural ventilation sufficiently reduced the radon concentration in the apartments. In particular, mechanical ventilation at "high" intensity was the most effective. Natural ventilation combined with mechanical ventilation and then natural ventilation alone were the second and the third most effective, respectively. Conclusions: When using ventilation to reduce indoor radon concentrations, it is most effective to operate mechanical ventilation ("high") or natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation at the same time. In cases where mechanical ventilation is available alone, it is recommended to operate it at a minimum of "middle" intensity.
In this paper, thermal comfort and ventilation performance characteristics in the lecture room with the ventilation system and two different air-conditioning systems, system air-conditioner or fan coil unit, were evaluated by experimental and numerical methods. We compared the measured data with the computational results of the predicted mean vote and carbon dioxide concentration. Additionally the ventilation effectiveness was calculated numerically. From a viewpoint of the uniformity of PMVs in the lecture room, the thermal distribution performance of the system air-conditioner was more effective than the fan coil unit. Carbon dioxide concentration and ventilation effectiveness were barely affected by the type of the air-conditioning system.
Ventilation system is being recommended as an effective tool to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) in apartment houses. Recently, in Korea, apartment house suppliers must establish ventilation system in apartment houses in law. In this study, improvement of IAQ by establishing mechanical ventilation system at apartment house was investigated by mockup test. Seven apartment houses were arranged for the test and improvement of IAQ was examined under the various conditions of ventilation rates, ventilator type and duct works. The results of this study show that IAQ in the test houses which were established mechanical ventilation system was improved about from 30% to 40% compared with IAQ in the apartment house which was not established ventilation system. However, there were no apparent concentration differences between the cases of changing ventilation rates, ventilator types and ductworks.
A hybrid ventilation system was introduced to predict the ventilation performance of the apartments. This ventilation system was composed of the natural supply-air inlet and the forced exhaust-air outlet. Analysis was conducted by CFD technique and was performed on three ventilating flow rates; 30, 60, 120 $m^3/h$. As the results, residents feel comfortable thermally and in air flow conditions for 60 $m^3/h$. But the case of 30 $m^3/h$ shows 1100ppm of $CO_2$ concentration due to the deficient of air flow rate. In the case of 120 $m^3/h$, however, residents feel uncomfortable thermally and in air currents. In this study the energy saving for space heating is also an important factor. A detailed prediction for more complicated whole apartment space will be investigated in the future.
This experiments are perfol1ned to investigate the effect of ventilation velocity on a high pressure water mist tire suppression in train. The experiment is conducted in half scale modeled train of a steel-welled enclosure (5.0m${\times}$2.4m${\times}$2.2m). The ventilation velocity is controlled by the ventilation duct through an inverter in the range of 0 to 3m/s. The coverage-radius and an injection angle of an high pressure water mist system are measured. The mist nozzle with 5-injection holes is operated with pressure 60bar. The heptane pool fires are used. The fire extinguishment times and the temperature are measured for the ventilation velocities. In conclusion, because the momentum of injected water mist is more dominant than that of ventilation air, the characteristics of water mist, the fire extinguishment times and the temperature are affected very little by ventilation velocity.
The recent on indoor air problem has led to many studies on the methods and effects of ventilation for better indoor air quality. Although natural ventilation is the most effective and energy-saving method in residental housings, the small size of openable window has been a problem in high-rise residential buildings to ventilate only through natural ventilation. Consequently, the installation of mechanical ventilation system has been a requirement in residential buildings, and has caused other problems such as increase of energy consumption and SBS. Hybrid ventilation which uses forces of both natural and mechanical power has been introduced to solve the problem of increase in energy consumption with natural ventilation. In this paper, two types of hybrid ventilation systems in residential building were introduced. One type was with natural ventilation through vent grille in the window, and another type was with natural ventilation through ceiling duct while both types used mechanical ventilation system with the outlets. The indoor temperature distribution and pollution density distribution in summer while operating the ceiling air conditioner were analyzed through CFD simulation. In this paper, the optimal location of diffusers to achieve thermal comfort would be proposed.
This study is to estimate the ventilation volume by the traffic that originated from driving automobiles for two tunnels (Kugi tunnel and Kumhwa tunnel) that adopted natural ventilation system among tunnels of Seoul, and on the basis of which, we estimated the ventilation velume at various conditions. With the result of the estimation, we will present the basic method that can be operated with the optimum condition for the ventilation system. Estimating the predicted ventilation volume in the tennel by the pollutant concentration, we used traffic volume and CO emission data by the automobile speed and CO concentration in the tunnel. And, when we estimated the traffic ventilation volume by natural and traffic ventilation force, we used traffic volume, automobile speed, tunnel area, automobile area data and so on. As the result of simple regression between predicted ventilation volume and traffic ventilation volume, we attained the regression coefficient 0.88, and achieved the relation form that predicted ventilation volume equal 0.12x traffic ventilation volume-92, 000. Using this equation, we estimated the ventilation volume to satisfy the enviromnental standards of several space, and calculated the required volume for mechanical ventilation. Incase of Kumhwa Tunnel, there is a need of mechanical ventilation all day long to satisfy air quality standard 9 ppm for 8 hours average and 10 ppm for the indoor air quality standard of public facilities.

On this work, the importance of industrial ventilation was investigated and examined the theoretical point and problems about general ventilation of factory exposed on high temperature during summer. As a case study, the ventilation planning of the printed circuit board (PCB) etching process for an electronic company was carried out and each of those characteristics were compared by installing actual ventilation systems and measuring the changing state of the working environment in accordance with ventilation method during summer. The purpose of the study is to present an efficient ventilation method for a factory with a closed structure under high temperature environment. In summary, for a factory with a sealed structure such as the target PCB manufacturing factory in this study, the forced supply and exhaust method was the most appropriate ventilation method for maintaining a low.
In these days, the green building movement caused by the energy crisis is increasing, passive design is getting mere and more attention as it provides many possibilities for energy conservation. Moreover, with the increasing social intention for healthy life, the demand for indoor air Quality is increasing in Korea. As result, the ventilation system which can provide the sound outdoor air constantly has been obliged in Korea. So, the hybrid system which using natural power and mechanical power and makes up for the shortage of mechanical and natural ventilation attracts people's attention in Korea. As a hybrid ventilation system, in this study, the stack effect driven hybrid ventilation system in high-rise residential building will be suggested. And in this paper, the theoretical review for hybrid ventilation system suggested in this study will be addressed. Especially, the characteristics of pressure distribution and airflow caused by stack effect in high-rise residential building and the possibility of natural ventilation as results of stack effect will be described.
