  • A NLFE model was proposed to investigate the mechanical behavior of short columns, cast using plain or fibrous lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC), and subjected to elevated temperatures of up to $700^{\circ}C$. The model was validated, before its predictions were extended to study the effect of other variables, not studied experimentally. The three-dimensional NLFE model was developed using ANSYS software and involved rational simulation of thermal mechanical behavior of plain and fibrous LWAC as well as longitudinal and lateral steel reinforcement. The prediction from the NLFE model of columns' mechanical behavior, as represented by the stress-strain diagram and its characteristics, compared well with the experimental results. The predictions of the proposed models, considering wide range of lateral reinforcement ratios, confirmed the behaviors observed experimentally and stipulated the importance of steel confinement in preserving post-heating mechanical properties of plain and fibrous LWAC columns, being subjected to high temperature.

  • The effect of the material hardening model of the canister on a finite element vertical cask drop simulation is investigated for the strain-based acceptance evaluation. Three different hardening models are considered in this paper: the isotropic hardening model, the strain rate-dependent Johnson-Cook (J-C) hardening model, and the modified J-C model which are believed to be the most accurate. By comparing the results using the modified J-C model, it is found that the use of the J-C model provides similar or larger stresses and strains depending on the magnitudes of the strain and strain rate. The use of the isotropic hardening model always yields larger stresses and strains. For the strain-based acceptance evaluation, the use of the isotropic hardening model can produce highly conservative assessment results. The use of the J-C model, however, produces satisfactory results.

  • In this study, we propose an analytical model for studying magnetic fields in radial-flux permanent-magnet eddy-current couplings by considering the effects of slots and iron-core protrusions on the eddy currents. We focus on the analytical prediction of the air-gap field by considering the influence of eddy currents induced in conducting bars. In the proposed model, the permanent magnet region is treated as the source of a time-varying magnetic field and the moving-conductor eddy current problem is solved based on the resolution of time-harmonic Helmholtz equations. The spatial harmonics in the air gap and in slots, as well as the time harmonics are all considered in the analytical calculation. Based on the proposed field model, the electromagnetic torque is computed by using the Maxwell stress tensor method. Nonlinear finite element analysis is performed to validate the analytical model. The proposed model can be used for permanent-magnet eddy-current couplings with any slot-pole combination.

  • In this study, numerical and experimental analysis on the spray atomization characteristics of a GDI injector is performed. For numerical approach, four hybrid models that are composed of primary and secondary breakup model are considered. Concerning the primary breakup, a conical sheet disintegration model and LISA model are used. The secondary breakup models are made based on the DDB model and RT model. The global spray behavior is also visualized by the shadowgraph technique and local Sauter mean diameter and axial mean velocity are measured by using phase Doppler particle analyzer Based on the comparison of numerical and experimental results, it is shown that good agreement is obtained in terms of spray developing process and spray tip penetration at the all hybrid models. However, the hybrid breakup models show different prediction of accuracy in the cases of local SMD and the spatial distribution of breakup.

  • In this paper, we propose a design method of PID adaptive controller based on frequency domain analysis. The method is based on the estimation of a nonparametric process model in the frequency domain and the determination of the PID controller parameters by achieving partial model matching so as to minimize a performance function concerning to relative model error between the loop transfer function of the control system and the desired system. In the design method the process is represented only by a discrete set of points on the Nyquist curve of the process. Therefore it is not necessary to estimate a full order parameterized process model.

  • In the case of mechanical control systems, it is highly useful to be able to provide a compact model of the mechanical system to control engineers using the smallest number of variables, while still providing an accurate model. The reduced mechanical model can then be inserted into the complete mechanical control system models and used for system-level dynamic simulation. In this paper, a moment-matching based model order reduction (MOR) which reduces the number of degrees of freedom of an original finite element model via the Arnoldi process is considered to study the dynamic responses of a HDD actuator and suspension system.

  • In the case of control for mechanical systems, it is highly useful to be able to provide a compact model of the mechanical system to control engineers using the smallest number of state variables, while still providing an accurate model. The reduced mechanical model can then be inserted into the complete system models and used for extended system-level dynamic simulation. In this paper, moment-matching based model order reductions (MOR) using Krylov subspaces, which reduce the number of degrees of freedom of an original finite element model via the Arnoldi process, are presented to study the eigenvalue and frequency response problems of a HDD actuator and suspension system.

  • A theoretical model of the frost formation has been presented to investigate the characteristics of the growth of frost layer by considering molecular diffusion of water vapor and heat generation caused by sublimation of water vapor in the frost layer. The present model was compared with existing experimental data as well as a previous model. The difference between the present model and existing experimental data was found to be about 6 percent. An analysis for the behavior of frost formation using present model shows a good agreement with the trend for a number of experimentally observed features. The present analysis can also provide the physical understanding on the phenomena of the frost formation.

  • A simple Lagrangian pdf model is proposed with a new numerical algorithm for application in wall-bounded turbulent flows. To investigate the performance of the Lagrangian model, we minimize model's dependence on empirical constants by selecting the simplest model for turbulent dissipation rate. The effect of viscosity is also included by adding a Brownian random walk calculate the position of a particle. For the no-slip condition at the wall and correct nearwall behavior of velocity, we develop a new boundary treatment for the particles that strike the wall. By applying the model to a fully developed turbulent channel flow at low Reynolds number, we investigate the model's performance through comparison with direct numerical simulation result.

  • An integrated finite element-based model is presented for the prediction of the three dimensional tran-sient thermo-mechanical behavior of the work roll in hot strip rolling. The model is comprised of basic finite element models which are incorporated into an iterative solution procedure to deal with the inter-dependence between the thermo-mechanical behavior of the strip and that of the work roll which arises from roll-strip contact as well as with the interdependence between the thermal and mechanical behav-ior Demonstrated is the capability of the model to reveal the detailed aspects of the thermo-mechanical behavior and to reflect the effect of various process parameters.
