  • The purposes of this study are 1) to revalidate the developed Measuring Instrument Systems Thinking and 2) to compare systems thinking skills between gifted and non-gifted high school students. For the test, 116 gifted science students and 553 non-gifted students were sampled from high schools. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were performed and Independent t-test was performed using the average of the two groups. The finding of the exploratory factor analysis indicated 5 factors in the model with 4 items per single factor. The result of confirmatory factor analysis was generally appropriate and acceptable (5 factor model: ${\chi}^2/df$ : 2.765, TLI=.907, CFI=.929, IFI=.930, RMSEA=.044). The reliability for 20 items turned out to be high because the Cronbach's alphas were at .875 and .693~.751 per each factor. In addition, the result of t-test showed that systems thinking skills among gifted science students were significantly higher than non-gifted students. This study could be expanded to measuring systems thinking with qualitative research tools and to various school levels.

  • In this study, an image processing algorithm with Lab VIEW IMAQ Module is presented and discussed for the development of a microscopic gap measuring system using CCD sensor. LabVIEW IMAQ development application that is developed by National Instrument Co. Inc. has a graphical interface and many image processing functions, so that it provides an easier environment for the development of a measurement algorithm using the image data. Actual microscopic gap measuring experiment was executed using the algorithm developed in this study and it showed a promising result. Also, we could obtain the convenience of Lab VIEW IMAQ in developing the algorithm.

  • Using the New Fast Walsh Transform algorithm, we present a new algorithm which reduces the computational amount, and it can consequently calculate the real and imaginary components for current and voltage signals of power system in sampling intervals. The calculation amount is reduced to 2X(m-1) at m samples to measure full harmonics using developed algorithm. When in single harmonic measuring, it needs only 2(log2N-1)+1 additions and subtractions. We developed hardware device for testing, and tested the developed algorithm by measuring real and imaginary components.

  • Recently, various daylight evaluation methods for visual environment have been developed; simulation analysis methods, numerical calculation, and data monitoring methods. However, it is impossible for simulation analysis to make real scenes and visualize real images exactly. Also, a numerical calculation is considered as an out of date and time-consuming mean. Therefore, for acquisition of accurate results, many studies often use the monitoring data methods. Especially, most studies regarding discomfort glare are evaluated by measuring the physical quantity of luminance through traditional measuring Minolta Luminance meters as an instrument. But, this method has a difficulty in measuring several points at the same time because of the limitation of spaces and time when mapping. So, this study focused on the potential usefulness of High Dynamic Range photography technique as a luminance mapping tool. In order to evaluate the accuracy of proposed programs such as webHDR, Photomatix and PHOTOLUX, this paper has conducted an experiment by using Canon EOS 5D and NICON Coolpix8400 digital camera.

  • This paper presents a hook-type finger force measuring system with force sensors. The system is composed of a body, two three-axis force sensors, a hook, and so on. The two three-axis force sensors system was specially designed using FEM(Finite Element Method) and fabricated using strain-gages. The sensors measure the finger forces of both normal people and handicapped people in the system, and the forces are combined. The developed hook-type finger force measuring system can measure the pulling finger force of both normal and handicapped people. The pulling force tests of men and women were performed using the developed the system. It is thought that the developed system can be used to measure the pulling force of fingers.

  • Goldingham's measurement of the velocity of sound undertaken in the early nineteenth century was the first large-scale measuring enterprise which considered various meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, the direction of the wind, etc. Goldingham's successful performance of measuring the velocity of sound by employing the sounds of cannons as sound source in Madras (now Chennai), a colonial region of India, for one and a half years was supported by material, institutional and social resources. As the official astronomer at the Madras Observatory, he was benefitted by the undemanding employment of accurate measuring instruments under the support of the Madras Army enabled him to gain reliable data and his reputation as professional experimentalist facilitated the acknowledgment of their trustworthiness.

  • Sound and vibrations enter every aspect of our daily lives. Some, like music and verbal communications, soothe and relax us; others, such as the noise and vibration from traffic or machinery, can threaten our well being. The Rion Co., Ltd. was eslablished in 1944 as an affiliate of physics and acoustic pioneer, Kobayashi Institute of Physical Research. The RION lineup affords a full line of easy-to handle measuring, recording, and analyzing equipment with innumerable applications for monitoring and maintaining a comfortable environment. RION's concern takes in all manner of sound and vibration. Our activities extend from measuring reverberation time in concert halls and testing the soundproofing characteristics of housing materials to the control and maintenance of machine noise and vibration levels.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of color measuring instrument by measuring the color of dental composite resins. Nine shade light cured composite resin disks were prepared (diameter : 15 mm, thickness : 4 mm). CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color scale of each disk was measured with 3 different types of spectrophotometer [MiniScan XE plus (Model 4000S, Hunter Lab, USA), CM-3500d (Minolta, Japan) and Specbos 2100 Miniature VIS Reflection spectrometer (Serial No: 319416, JETI Technishe VIS Instrumentic GmbH. Germany)]. Miniscan XE Plus and CM-3500d using identical measuring geometry with different size of viewing aperture. But Specbos 2100 using different measuring geometry. Within the limitation of this study, there were color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) from 2.4 to 7.8 between Miniscan XE Plus and CM-3500d, but $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values showed the high correlation. However, there were great color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) in the extent of about 20 between instruments with the different measuring geometry. Therefore, color scale measured by color measuring instrument should be used as a relative value rather than an absolute value in the field of dentistry.

  • Stroke patients, etc. can't use their hands because of the paralysis of their fingers, and their fingers could be recovered by rehabilitating training. In order to judge the rehabilitating extent of their fingers, the patients should grasp a cylindrical object in hospital. At present, the used object in hospital is only a cylindrical object, and can't measure the force of fingers. Therefore, doctors judge the rehabilitating extent by touching and watching at their fingers. So, the four-finger force measuring system which can measure the force of their fingers should be developed. In this paper, four-finger force measuring system with four force sensors which can measure the grasping force is developed. The force sensors are designed and fabricated, and the force measuring device is designed and manufactured by using DSP(digital signal processing). Also, the grasping force test of men is performed by using the developed four-finger force measuring system. It was confirmed that the finger average force of right hand is about 214.6 N and that of left hand is about 212.8 N.

  • This study develops a new device system for measuring a slope of object with non-adhesive, non-contact and non-face-to-face, namely Inclinometer Slope Laser Measuring (ISLM), that is applicable in the field. This system includes cradle, laser, camera, and computer and the filming and is performed after laser projection at programmed intervals. After measuring the amount of displacement converted to numerical values, these values can then be transferred to the office using the selected data transmission method. The obtained results from the test carried out to verify the reliability of the ISLM system indicated that the ISLM system can measure with accurately level of 0.1mm/Pixel at 1m distance and when increasing the camera resolution, the precision might increase proportionally. Therefore, the proposed measure system may widely apply on-site for various constructions, especially, in the case of object with very high surface temperature where exhibits difficulty to directly measure the adjacent structures. However, due to the sensitive reaction to the illuminance, this method can be applied with caution at times of large changes in illuminance, such as at dawn and at dusk.
