  • This study empirically evaluated performance and preference of Hangul entry methods of five mobile phones through questionnaire and experiments. The questionnaire study revealed that 67% of respondents have been using SMS(short message service) more than six times a day, and that Hangul entry method is the most inconvenient thing when inputting Hangul characters. An experiment was conducted for assessing five Hangul entry methods in view of performance of entry time and errors, and subjective measures of satisfaction and preference. The results showed that Hangul entry method significantly affect objective performances as well as subjective measures at α=0.05 or 0.01. This study, in which real mobile phones were used, presented contrary result in terms of Hangul entry time, compared to the existing studies based on the conceptual models of Fitts' law or Hick-Hyman law.

  • Six recycling plants have started operation for recycling scrap home appliances since the spring of 2000 in Taiwan. The performance of the plants has not yet been measured during the 18-month period. The performance measurement, however, can be looked in several aspects. Because of the nature of these recycling plants, at least three aspects, namely government (representing general public), appliance manufacturers and owners of the recycling plants themselves should be considered in the performance evaluation. This study proposes various performance indices categorized in four groups: profitability, recyclability, automation and environment. The indices are different from the productivity and cost measures that are used in conventional manufacturing plants. Performances of three existing plants in Taiwan are evaluated as illustrative examples to demonstrate the use of the proposed measures. The practical implications of the performance indices are also discussed.

  • In this paper, the impact of channel sensing methods to IEEE 802.15.4 under the interference of IEEE 802.11b are analyzed. Two different channel sensing methods, energy detection and carrier sense, are considered. An average transmission delay, a throughput, and a power drain rate are used as performance measures. Those performance measures of IEEE 802.15.4 under the interference of IEEE 802.11b are analyzed mathematically. The simulation results are shown to validate the analytic results.

  • Recently, a variety of confidence measures for utterance verification has been studied to improve speech recognition performance by rejecting out-of-vocabulary inputs. Most of the conventional confidence measures for utterance verification are based primarily on hypothesis testing or an approximated posterior probability, and their performances depend on the robustness of an alternative hypothesis or the prior probability. We introduce a novel confidence measure called a search confusion rate (SCR), which does not require an alternative hypothesis or the approximation of posterior probability. Our confusion-based approach shows better performance in additive noise-corrupted speech as well as in clean speech.

  • The rapid development of microarray technologies enabled the monitoring of expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously. Recently, the time course gene expression data are often measured to study dynamic biological systems and gene regulatory networks. For the data, biologists are attempting to group genes based on the temporal pattern of their expression levels. We apply the consensus clustering algorithm to a time course gene expression data in order to infer statistically meaningful information from the measurements. We evaluate each of consensus clustering and existing clustering methods with various validation measures. In this paper, we consider hierarchical clustering and Diana of existing methods, and consensus clustering with hierarchical clustering, Diana and mixed hierachical and Diana methods and evaluate their performances on a real micro array data set and two simulated data sets.

  • In this study, we propose an alternative method for discriminant analysis using a multivariate empirical distribution function to express multivariate data as a simple one-dimensional statistic. This method turns to be the estimation process of the optimal threshold based on classification accuracy measures and an empirical distribution function of data composed of classes. This can also be visually represented on a two-dimensional plane and discussed with some measures in ROC curves, surfaces, and manifolds. In order to explore the usefulness of this method for discriminant analysis in the study, we conducted comparisons between the proposed method and the existing methods through simulations and illustrative examples. It is found that the proposed method may have better performances for some cases.

  • This paper proposes two distance measures between two cumulative hazard functions that can be obtained by comparing their difference and ratio, respectively. Then we estimate the measures and present goodness of t test statistics. Since the proposed test statistics are expressed in terms of the cumulative hazard functions, we can easily give more weights on earlier (or later) departures in cumulative hazards if we like to place an emphasis on earlier (or later) departures. We also show that these test statistics present comparable performances with other well-known test statistics based on the empirical distribution function for an exponential null distribution. The proposed test statistic is an omnibus test which is applicable to other lots of distributions than an exponential distribution.

  • Measures on poor process should be identified by reviewing analysis of planned progress and actual progress for successful performance of Process Control. However, the existing Process Control only performances follow-up measures on poor process but it cannot prevent poor process which is not occurred. To solve these problems, this study suggests the three types of methods of process prediction(Regression Analysis) by using a progress rate which consists of planned progress rate and Actual progress rate.

  • We investigate a Leaky Bucket(LB) scheme with a threshold in the data buffer, where leaky rate changes depending on the contents of data buffer. We use the fluid flow model for the analysis of the LB scheme with a threshold. We model the bursty input source as markov modulated fluid flow(MMFF) As performance measures we obtain loss probability and mean delay. We present some numerical results to show the effects of the level of a threshold, the rate of token generation, the size of token pool, and the size the data buffer on the performances of the LB scheme with a threshold.

  • To apply the queueing network theory in evaluating performances of flexible manufacturing systems, it is generally assumed that the processing times are distributed exponentially. However, in FMS, processing times are usually deterministic. In this study the performance measures of FMS are approximated under the assumption that processing times are usually deterministic. Multi-classes of parts and single server and multi-server stations are considered in the model. This study also that, in the numerical example, this approach yields better solutions than those obtained by the pure Linearizer algorithm, when the processing times are deterministic.
