  • The deep foundation is frequently used for the infrastructures. Since the quality control of the cast-in-place concrete foundations such as CIP piles and slurry walls is not so easy as that of the ready made PC(prestressed concrete) piles, it is necessary to get the information on the integrity of the concrete of the foundation. The depth estimation of foundations whose depths are unknown is also very important in repair and reinforcement works or in safety inspection and assessment to the big structures. The cross-hole sonic logging(CSL) system and the single channel reflection seismic measurement system were developed to test the integrity of pile. The former is well applied to CIP structures, while the later to all kinds of piles with less accurate result compared to that of CSL. To estimate the depth of the deep foundations, parallel seismics, borehole RADAR, and borehole magnetics can be used.

  • Although 3D stereoscopic movies had been paid attention to a few times since the 1900's, the interest had not been last. Most researchers pointed out the reason came from human factors because the early in the 3D technology growth had to develop technological possibility to realize 3D videos and ignore the importance viewers' perspective. In the 2D video research, many studies have explored the factors which make people got immersed or involved and felt visual fatigue, but they have not been the main issues in the 3D research until now. The present research believes human factor issue is one of the most important parts to accelerate 3D industry and thus, we try to make reliable and valid assessments to evaluate 3D video which are perceived characteristics, impression, and presence.

  • CCTV-applied monitoring is an effective measure to suppress potential crimes and record objective relationship; however, there is no methodology that can quantitatively compare and assess the afore-mentioned effects. Thus, this study intended to construct the methodology and analysis application that can measure the changes in the space-corresponding performance of CCTVs depending on installation measures by using 3-dimenstional virtual simulation technology. For analysis, the raster-based Isovist theory was 3-dimensionally expanded and the amount of incident sight line to each point was accumulated. At the same time, the amount of overlapped monitoring in the CCTV cameras that were connected to each measurement node was accumulated for cross-analysis. By applying the examples and analyzing the results, it was possible to construct an analysis application in use of collision detection model and quantify the changes of monitoring performance depending on positioning alternative of the cameras. Moreover, it enabled intuitive review and supplementation by reproducing visible shadow areas in a graph.

  • PURPOSES : This study estimated the load effect of a single heavy truck to develop a live load model for the design and assessment of bridges located on an expressway with a limited truck entry weight. METHODS : The statistical estimation methods for the live load effect acting on a bridge by a heavy vehicle are reviewed, and applications using the actual measurement data for trucks traveling on an expressway are presented. The weight estimation of a single vehicle and its effect on a bridge are fundamental elements in the construction of a live load model. Two statistical estimation methods for the application of extrapolation in a probabilistic study and an additional estimation method that adopts the extreme value theory are reviewed. RESULTS : The proposed methods are applied to the traffic data measured on an expressway. All of the estimation methods yield similar results using the data measured when the weight limit has been relatively well observed because of the rigid enforcement of the weight regulation. On the other hand, when the estimations are made using overweight traffic data, the resulting values differ with the estimation method. CONCLUSIONS : The estimation methods based on the extreme distribution theory and the modified procedure presented in this paper can yield reasonable values for the maximum weight of a single truck, which can be applied in both the design and evaluation of a bridge on an expressway.

  • Purpose: The cow's milk-related-symptom-score (CoMiSS) tool was developed as an awareness tool for the assessment of cow's milk-related symptoms in infants or children. Fecal calprotectin (FC) is a noninvasive biomarker of gut inflammation that can be measured in serum and stool. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between FC levels and CoMiSS scores in infants with cow's milk protein allergy. Methods: Infants (aged 6-12 months) who were allergic to cow's milk protein were enrolled prospectively. Following completion of the CoMiSS scoring, the infants were divided into group 1 (positive CoMiSS scores ≥12) and group 2 (negative CoMiSS scores <12). FC was measured using immunoassay. Results: Of the 120 infants enrolled in this study, 60 (50.0%) had positive CoMiSS scores (group 1), while 60 (50.0%) had negative scores (group 2). The mean FC level was higher in the infants in group 1 than those in group 2 (2,934.57 ㎍/g vs. 955.13 ㎍/g; p<0.001). In addition, there was a positive correlation between FC and CoMiSS scores (R=0.168, p<0.0001). A FC level of 1,700 ㎍/g provided a sensitivity of 98.3%, specificity of 93.3%, and accuracy of 95.8% for the diagnosis of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). Conclusion: FC measurement may have a role in the assessing infants with CMPA.

  • Objectives: This study assessed the reliability of digital color measurements using images of resin composite specimens captured with a cellphone. Materials and Methods: The reference color of cylindrical specimens built-up with the use of resin composite (shades A1, A2, A3, and A4) was measured with a portable spectrophotometer (CIELab). Images of the specimens were obtained individually or pairwise (compared shades in the same photograph) under standardized parameters. The color of the specimens was measured in the images using RGB system and converted to CIELab system using image processing software. Whiteness index (WID) and color differences (ΔE00) were calculated for each color measurement method. For the cellphone, the ΔE00 was calculated between the pairs of shades in separate images and in the same image. Data were analyzed using 2-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (α = 0.05). Linear regression models were used to predict the reference ΔE00 values of those calculated using color measured in the images. Results: Images captured with the cellphone resulted in different WID values from the spectrophotometer only for shades A3 and A4. No difference to the reference ΔE00 was observed when individual images were used. In general, a similar ranking of ΔE00 among resin composite shades was observed for all methods. Stronger correlation coefficients with the reference ΔE00 were observed using individual than pairwise images. Conclusions: This study showed that the use of cellphone images to measure the color difference seems to be a feasible alternative providing outcomes similar to those obtained with the spectrophotometer.

  • This research delves into the evaluation of the suitability of ultrasonic pulse velocity as a diagnostic tool for early detection of frost damage in concrete. The investigation involves the measurement of compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity concerning the depth of freezing for individual mortar specimens, followed by an analysis of their microstructure and their interrelation. The findings indicate a consistent decrease in both compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity with increasing freezing depth. Furthermore, a correlation between compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity concerning the depth of early frost damage is established. Consequently, the study asserts the potential of utilizing the ultrasonic pulse velocity method for early detection of frost damage in concrete, with prospects for quantifying the depth of damage through further research endeavors.

  • It was analyzed to identify the cause of $PM_{2.5}$ concentration changes for the fall in 2016 and 2017 in South Korea using ground measurement data such as meterological variables and $PM_{2.5}$, AOD from GOCI satellite, and WRF-CMAQ modeling system. The result of ground measurement data showed that the $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations for the fall in 2017 decreased by 12.3% ($3.0{\mu}g/m^3$) compared to that of 2016. The difference of $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations between 2016 and 2017 mainly occurred for 11 Oct. - 20 Oct. (CASE1) and 15 Nov. - 19 Nov. (CASE2) when weather conditions were difficult to long-range transport from foreign regions and favored atmospheric ventilation in 2017 compared to 2016. Simulated $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in 2017 decreased by 64.0% ($23.1{\mu}g/m^3$) and 35.7% ($12.2{\mu}g/m^3$) during CASE1 and CASE2, respectively. These results corresponded to the changes in observed $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations such as 53.6% for CASE1 and 47.8% for CASE2. It is implied that the changes in weather conditions affected significantly the $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations for the fall between 2016 and 2017. The contributions to decreases in $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations was assessed as 52.8% by long-range transport from foreign regions and 47.2% by atmospheric ventilation effects in domestic regions during CASE1, whereas their decreases during CASE2 were affected by 66.4% from foreign regions and 33.6% in domestic regions.

  • The major focus of this study is to evaluate a newly developed stream naturalness index system 'Habitat-riparian Indexing System (HIS).' There have been many studies that have assessed stream naturalness in order to provide information required for restoration. The results of these studies were enough for the purpose of the studies; however, the methodologies were limited especially with respect to rapid measurement and the representation of ecological habitats. Therefore, we derived crucial variables from a popularly utilized method and merged them with other criteria obtained from overseas approaches, resulting in the development of the HIS method. The stability of HIS was evaluated by comparing the results with the Stream Naturalness Index (SNI) of Cho (1997). We monitored 100 stream sites in the Nakdong River system using the two different methods for two sampling periods (spring and autumn), and the results were compared using statistical analyses. The determination coefficients between the index values from two methods were c.a. 0.6 for both seasons, and statistics revealed that HIS had a relatively higher stability, providing index values for stream environments. The results of this work suggest a possibility of the utility of HIS for other stream habitats.
