Development of Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry for the Determination of Essential Fatty Acids in Food Supplemental Oil Products

  • A gas chromatography/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) method was developed as a candidate reference method for the accurate determination of essential fatty acids (linoleic acid, ${\alpha}$- and ${\gamma}$-linolenic acids) in food supplemental oil products. Samples were spiked with three internal standards (stearic acid-$d_{35}$, $^{13}C_{18}$-linoleic acid, and $^{13}C_{18}$-${\alpha}$-linolenic acid). Samples were then subject to saponification, derivatization for methylation, and extraction by organic solvent. For GC/MS measurement, an Agilent HP-88 column, designed for the separation of fatty acid methyl esters, was selected after comparing with other columns as it provided better separation for target analytes. Target analytes and internal standards were detected by selected ion monitoring of molecular ions of their methyl ester forms. The GC/MS method was applied for the measurement of three botanical oils in NIST SRM 3274 (borage oil, evening primrose oil, and flax oil), and measurement results agreed with the certified values. Measurement results for target analytes which have corresponding isotope-labeled analogues as internal standard were calculated based on isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) approach, and compared with results calculated by using the other two internal standards. Results from the IDMS approach and the typical internal standard approach were in good agreement within their measurement uncertainties. It proves that the developed GC/MS method can provide similar metrological quality with IDMS methods for the measurement of fatty acids in natural oil samples if a proper fatty acid is used as an internal standard.

An Approach for the Uncertainty Evaluation of the Overall Result from Replications of Measurement: Separately Combining Individual Uncertainty Components According to their 'systematic' and 'random' Effects

  • In our previous articles, an approach has been proposed for the evaluation of the uncertainty of overall result from multiple measurements. In the approach, uncertainty sources were classified into two groups: the first including those giving same 'systematic' effect on each individual measurement and the second including the others giving 'random' effect on each individual measurement and causing a variation among individual measurement results. The arithmetic mean of the replicated measurements is usually assigned as the value for the overall result. Uncertainty of the overall result is determined by separately evaluating and combining an overall uncertainty from sources of the 'systematic' effect and another overall uncertainty from sources of the 'random' effect. This conceptual approach has been widely adopted in chemical metrology society. In this study, further logical proof with more detailed mathematical expressions is provided on the approach.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop standards to ensure nursing process-based care of oxygen therapy and airway suctioning and to develop a performance measurement tool to evaluate the care applied according to the standards, and finally to determine validity of the standards and the tool. Methods: The standards and the tool were reviewed by a panel of experts and refined based on the panel's suggestions. Validity of the standards and the tool were examined through surveying a total of 366 hospital nurses. Results: The mean validity scores of the performance measurement standards and the tool were 3.58 and 3.55, respectively, out of 4.00. So the performance measurement standards and the tool in this study were found to be acceptable in evaluating quality of nursing care provided at patient admission and discharge. Conclusion: This result indicates that the performance measurement standards and the tool developed in this study are valid instruments to monitor and improve quality of nursing care for oxygen therapy and airway suctioning.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop standards ensuring nursing process-based fluid intake/output and tube care, and to develop a performance measurement tool evaluating the level of care according to the standards, and finally to determine validity of the standards and the tool. Methods: The standards and the tool were reviewed by a panel of experts and refined based on the panel's suggestions. Validity of the standards and the tool were examined using a survey of 293 hospital nurses. Results: The mean validity scores of the performance measurement standards and the tool were 3.86 and 4.02, respectively, out of 5.00. So the performance measurement standards and the tool in this study were found to be acceptable in evaluating quality of nursing care for fluid intake/output and tubes. Conclusion: This result indicates that the performance measurement standards and the tool developed in this study are valid instruments to monitor and improve quality of nursing care for fluid intake/output and tube interventions, such as intravenous catheters, nasogastric tube and urinary catheters.

Methods: The standards and the tool were reviewed by a panel of experts and refined based on the panel's suggestions. Validity of the standards and the tool were examined through surveying a total of 302 hospital nurses. Results: The mean validity scores of the performance measurement standards and the tool were 4.11 and 4.09, respectively, out of 5.00. So the performance measurement standards and the tool in this study were found to be acceptable in evaluating quality of nursing care provided at patient admission and discharge. Conclusion: This result indicates that the performance measurement standards and the tool developed in this study are valid instruments to monitor and improve quality of nursing care for patient admission and discharge.

  • This paper describes a CCM key comparison of low absolute-pressure standards at seven National Measurement Institutes that was carried out during the period March 1998 to September 1999 in order to determine their degrees of equivalence at pressures in the range 1 Pa to 1000 Pa. The Korea Research Institutes of Standards and Science(KRISS) participated from 10 Pa to 1000 Pa pressure range in 1999. The primary standards, which represent two principal measurement methods, included five liquid-column manometers and four static expansion systems. The transfer standard package consisted of four high-precision pressure transducers, two capacitance diaphragm gauges to provide high resolution at low pressures, and two resonant silicon gauges to provide the required calibration stability.

  • 본 연구에서는 폐광지역 지반침하 관리시 토목분야(도로, 철도 등)의 계측관리기준을 그대로 준용하고 있는 현행 계측수행 상의 문제점을 개선하기 위해 광산분야에서 적용할 수 있는 새로운 정량적 계측관리기준을 제시하였다. 광해관리공단의 협조를 얻어 폐광지역에서 수행된 지반침하 관련 자료들을 수집하였고, 이 중 현장에서 실측된 수동계측자료들을 토대로 새로운 계측관리기준치 설정에 대한 여러 기법들에 대해 연구하였다. 그 결과, 계측치들의 평균값, 3사분위수, 95% 신뢰도, 최대값 등의 통계량을 통해 계측항목별 계측관리기준치를 설정, 제안하였다.

  • Heart consists of myocardium cells and the electrophysiological activity of the cells generate magnetic fields. By measuring this magnetic field, magnetocardiogram (MCG), functional diagnosis of the heart diseases is possible. Since the strength of the MCG signals is weak, typically in the range of 1-10 pT, we need sensitive magnetic sensors. Conventionally, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID)s were used for the detection of MCG signals due to its superior sensitivity to other magnetic sensors. However, drawback of the SQUID is the need for regular refill of a cryogenic liquid, typically liquid helium for cooling low-temperature SQUIDs. Efforts to eliminate the need for the refill in the SQUID system have been done by using cryocooler-based conduction cooling or use of non-cryogenic sensors, or room-temperature sensors. Each sensor has advantage and disadvantage, in terms of magnetic field sensitivity and complexity of the system, and we review the recent trend of MCG technology.

  • This study deals with the motion modeling by the unit motion of robots and the work measurement through classification of robot motions and standardization. The proposed approach is to scrutinize the Predetermined Time Standards(PTS) methods for measurement of manual tasks performed by people and the basic motions for accomplishing that tasks. And then, it constructs the unit motion models as subsets composed with the basic motions. It apply together with movements distance as a time variable, too. These results are used for the work measurements of robots by the unit motion models.
