  • This study aims to examine how visitors in science centers interact with gesture-based exhibits from embodied cognition perspectives. Four gesture-based exhibits in two science centers were selected for this study. In addition, we interviewed a total of 14 visitor groups to examine how they perceived the property of gesture-based exhibit. We also interviewed four experts to further examine the benefits and limitations of the current gesture-based exhibits in science centers. The research results indicate that the total amount of interaction time between visitors and gesture-based exhibits was not high overall, implying that there was little of visitors' immersive engagement. Both experts and visitors expressed that the current gesture-based exhibits tend to highlight the novelty effect but little obvious impacts linking gestures and learning. Drawing from the key findings, this study suggests the following design considerations for gesture-based exhibits. First, to increate visitor's initial engagement, the purpose and usability of gesture-based exhibits should be considered from the initial phase of design. Second, to promote meaningful interaction, it is important to sustain visitors' initial engagement. For that, gesture-based exhibits should be transformed to promote intellectual curiosity beyond simple interaction. Third, from embodied cognition perspectives, exhibits design should reflect how the mappings between specific gestures and metaphors affect learning processes. Lastly, this study suggests that future gesture-based exhibits should be designed toward promoting interaction among visitors and adaptive inquiry.

  • Objective: This paper focuses on the new trend of applying NUI(natural user interface) such as gesture interaction into television and investigates on the design improvement needed in application. The intention is to find better design direction of NUI on television context, which will contribute to making new features and behavioral changes occurring in next-generation television more practically usable and meaningful use experience elements. Background: Traditional television is rapidly evolving into next-generation television thanks to the influence of "smartness" from mobile domain. A number of new features and behavioral changes occurred from such evolution are on their way to be characterized as the new experience elements of next-generation television. Method: A series of expert review by television UX professionals based on AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) was conducted to check on the "relative appropriateness" of applying gesture interaction to a number of selected television user experience scenarios. Conclusion: It is critical not to indiscriminately apply new interaction techniques like gesture into television. It may be effective in demonstrating new technology but generally results in poor user experience. It is imperative to conduct consistent validation of its practical appropriateness in real context. Application: The research will be helpful in applying gesture interaction in next-generation television to bring optimal user experience in.

  • The issues of compositionality, materialized ever since Frege (1982), are critically re-examined in language first mainly and then in all other possible representational systems such as thoughts, concept combination, computing, gesture, music, and animal cognition. The notion is regarded as necessary and suggested as neurologically correlated in humans, even if a weakened version is applicable because of non-articulated constituents and contextuality. Compositionality is crucially involved in all linguistically or non-linguistically meaningful expressions, dealing with at-issue content, default content, and even not-at-issue meanings such as implicatures and presuppositions in discourse. It is a constantly guiding principle to show the relation between representation and mind, still posing tantalizing research issues.

  • This paper presents a system which recognizes dynamic hand gesture for virtual reality (VR). A dynamic hand gesture is a method of communication for human and computer who uses gestures, especially both hands and fingers. Since the human hands and fingers are not the same in physical dimension, the produced by two persons with their hands may not have the same numerical values where obtained through electronic sensors. To recognize meaningful gesture from continuous gestures which have no token of beginning and end, this system segments current motion states using the state automata. In this paper, we apply a fuzzy min-max neural network and feature analysis method using fuzzy logic for on-line pattern recognition.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems of the rapidly increasing voice interface and to find out what results will be obtained when the new gesture interaction is applied to the product, and to suggest the improvement method for a better user experience. Through the literature review, I have conducted a theoretical review on the changes in the product interface used in the product and the difference between them, and then conducted in-depth interviews on the 20-30 users who used voice recognition as a product trigger. As a result, it was concluded that the decline in the reliability of accuracy leads to a decrease in the preference of voice recognition interactions and an needs of appropriate interface for the functional aspect of non-relavancy in physical distance as a product trigger. This study is meaningful in that it has found a problem with the study of the product trigger interface and suggested improvement measures, and hope to be helpful in follow-up study.

  • The emerging technologies for the natural computer interaction can give manufacturers new opportunities of product innovation. This paper is the study on a method of human communication about a finger gestures interaction. As technological advance has been so rapid over the last few decades, the utilizing products or services will be soon popular. The purpose of this experiment are as follows; What is the usefulness of gesture interaction? What is the cognitive impact on gesture interaction users. The finger gestures interaction consist of poking, picking and grasping. By measuring each usability in 2D and 3D space, this study shows the effect of finger gestures interaction. The 2D and 3D experimental tool is developed by using LeapMotion technology. As a results, the experiments involved 48 subjects shows that there is no difference in usability between the gestures in 2D space but in 3D space, the meaningful difference has been found. In addition, all gestures express good usability in 2D space rather than 3D space. Especially, there are the attractive interest that using uni-finger is better than multi-fingers.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify whether the concept of time conveys meanings similar to nonverbal communicative elements in foreign language education. This study surveys cultural traits of time from the French cultural education perspective. Anthropologist Edward T. Hall points out that each cultural community has developed a different perception of time and experience, and that time conveys the meaningful message nonverbally similar to the nonverbal elements such as space, gesture, eye movement, and facial expression. I investigated the time experiences of a drinking party in France and in Korea, from a cultural relativistic point of view. The subject of a drinking party was chosen on the ground that a drinking party is highly related to most people's daily lives and it also indicates how they have a relationship with others. I sought a new direction in foreign language cultural education by analyzing how cultural differences between the two communities, especially the relationships between individuals and organisations, ways to separate leisure and labor, and the nonverbal elements, are presented in the two drinking parties.
