  • The objective of this study is to understand bodily extension and identity in contemporary fashion art through the analysis of 'the fashion acting on the body' among the fashion theory excluding body and the conspicuous works on the opening and covering images as a fashion art as a body-space'. This study also investigated identity problems where there are poles apart in opening and closure their bodies and body-space in which its clothing types were distorted by being de-bodilization out of the traditional and ideological expression method in contemporary fashion art from a opening and closure point of view. Image of opening and closure among body-space in fashion art can be classified into opposing structure of opening and closure. Destroying the boundary between bodily opening and closure for a primary function of clothing and dismantling the role and boundary between body and clothing, opening body-space in appearance as a reemergence of body image or the border between inner and outer are being ambiguous because of transparent material. Being representative work of this study opening body-space was expressed as an opening space image using transparency. On the contrary, closure body-space was isolated from external environment and confined in the certain space, which could limit or restraint body- action. Excluding boundary of body and clothing on the whole or in part, boundary of work becomes body-space. However, these were appeared to be a work inducing unlimited curiosity and meaning from the audience. The interpretation of artistic and body-space in fashion art are indicating the role and function of the fashion art exceeding the suggestible dimensions in the every day life of fashion. The body-space of fashion art showing similar aspect of body art today could be understood that it is substituted into an metaphorical, critical space by seeing it as a symbol system connected with social space. Therefore, contemporary fashion art should be interpreted as an equivocal space looking at the body-space with open mind.

  • Elegance in dress has been mentioned as an important term for explaining a beauty of dress and a fashion image through the times in the history of dress. Nevertheless, it has been spoken indeterminately without analyzing the accurate meaning. In addition, almost all the scattered discourses of it were very limited to womenswear. The purpose of this study is to provide a framework for a better understanding of the concept of elegance and its aesthetic characteristics expressed visually on dress from the holistic viewpoint, focusing on male elegance in dress. To obtain the purpose, the documentary study and the practical analysis were carried out. Elegance in dress is based upon the idea of aristocratic taste cultivated by good breeding. It is expressed visually through not only the carefully contrived dress but also a sort of aura of dressed body with skillful ease. Its aesthetic values consist of luxury, nobility, refinement, femininity, harmony. Though male elegant styles had already existed throughout the history of dress, it was Mannerism in the 16th century which expressed ‘studied elegance’ for the first time. On the grounds of both the classification of periodic styles and the periodic values, they can be defined and categorized into Mannerism Elegance, Salon Elegance, Modern Elegance Since Dandyism, Aestheticism Elegance. In the late 20th century they can be recognised as Classic Dandyism Elegance, Soft Casual Elegance, Elaborate Heroic Elegance. Although male elegance in dress has been visualized in different ways depending on periodic values, it has essentially been a refined beauty of high class which was valued until recent years. Its common plastic features appear as soft shapes, subtle colors and delicate fabrics modulated with exquisiteness and well-adorned appearance, graceful behavior make elegant styles completed. All of elegant styles have m common with refinement, harmony as main aesthetic values.

  • Recently, consumers' evaluation and purchase of online design has been increasing due to the popularization of designing through personal computers, but there has not been enough studies on consumers' brain wave responses depending on the change of PC monitor's color. Therefore, this study investigated how brain waves changed when different background colors with gray patterns were presented through PC monitors. Six background colors with same tone of slightly low saturation were selected, including ivory, yellow, pink, green, blue and pure white as a base color. The brightness and characteristics of color used were analyzed using the luminance meter and color scales. Brain wave was measured by EEG measurement equipment. Brain wave measurement was carried out with 9 subjects at 6 points: F3, F4, T3, T4, O1, and O2. Stimuli were shown for 15 seconds each and black screens were displayed for 15 seconds between each stimulus. As results, the brain waves at O1 responded sensitively by different background colors, followed by F4 and T4. Brain index such as 'RT', 'RA', 'RG', 'RSA', and 'RAHB' showed significant differences depending on the background color at O1, whereas 'RST' differed at F4. Yellow and blue backgrounds pair was the only stimuli that showed significant differences in six brain indices mentioned. Yellow background had higher value of 'RG' at O1 and higher 'RST' at F4, indicating yellow background enhanced concentration. Blue background activated 'RT', 'RA', 'RSA', 'RAHB' at O1, meaning blue background induced calm and stable state.

  • Purpose: With particular focus on the analysis of elderly community space in local communities, this study aims to propose policies and points to consider in the planning and management of community space that can encourage the elderly to actively participate in community activities. Methods: The study explores five different Japanese community spaces that have been utilized as platforms for intergenerational interactions; the research was carried out by literature review, field work and interviews. Results: The results are as follows. First, the planning of the community space for the elderly must be combined with the space that the locals often use. Community space should not be seen as a place for a specific generation, but for everyone to interact with each other at any time; hence it must be fostered to be accessible for anyone regardless of age. Second, community space for the elderly requires to be planned as an accessible place for everyone such as cafes and restaurants. The adjacent areas require social infrastructure like libraries and public baths which are frequently used by people from various age groups. Third, in order to spark off the intergenerational community space as the stronghold of local communities, it needs to be a place where the elderly is given sufficient role and meaning as a member of the community. To achieve this, it is essential to support the locals to take active measures in creating job opportunities for the elderly and the disabled, and to develop voluntary self-sufficiency and volunteering programs.

  • When it comes to the architecture design, Kuma Kengo rejects a strong and violent subject-centered position and advocates the design that is object-oriented. As can be seen in 'gentle architecture', 'three lows principle', 'natural architecture', and 'connecting architecture', he clearly expresses the objective nature of architecture design in those terms. In this respect, the purpose of this study is to make a close inquiry into the meaning, effect and characteristics of objectivity. In particular, we try to identify the contents of 'impure architecture', which has a clear ambivalence to be an instrumental expression strongly settled in the objectivity, in an aesthetic standpoint. To do that, we systemized the concept of mimesis and the theory of subversive appropriation by Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno in to a frame of interpretation. By systemizing translation, subversion, verbalization and the dialectic structure of the aesthetics of negation, we interpreted the features of his works as an objective work and 'impure architecture'. His objectivity leads the situation by subversively appropriating the inherent elements of architectural conditions based on a dialectic solution in which inquiries on logical and scientific materials have played a critical role. Above all, through all these processes, he tried to suggest a language as a new technique for materials and structures. Ultimately, we could find out that this object oriented design sublates a subject oriented way that is monolithic and repetitive regardless of objects. Rather, it is a way that is effective in creating a new way of design by making a different approach to a new object rather unfamiliarly, yet deeply.

  • It is easier to objectify the designing process with the analysis of how users perceive any space depending on the purpose of space visiting in the interactions of them and images. This study analyzed the observation characteristics perceived through observation frequency and time depending on the purpose cafe customers to understand what effect the design factors constructing the space has on the observation characteristics which are the results obtained as information through visual perception. The followings are the results of this study. First, The time range for searching or wandering and the observation characteristics could be estimated by the meaning of observation time by grade with the setup of time-range out of the distribution of sections. Second, at the time distribution by section, when there was intention, the observation time was found to have higher occupation. Third, though the higher section frequency is likely to have more observation time, the grades of II/V had higher frequency of [Intention] and the time had higher [Non-Intention], which revealed that there is a tendency for the observation characteristics vary in a large degree depending on whether there was intention or not. Fourth, by the application of the observation characteristics of each grade for interrelation analysis depending on whether there is any intention to the space of cafe, the detailed space characteristics could be compared with observation tendency. The difference of obtained information has an effect on obtaining perceived information, and since the intention may affect any information which is obtained, it is necessary for design information suitable to visit purpose or users' observation intention to be transferred in the process of designing. Analyzing the effect of any change to designing factors on the sight inducing intention and synchronization will help to understand the emotional design focused on users.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the health hazards and to develop early diagnostic methods of the manganism in experienced welders and to know the meaning of signal intensities on the brain Magnetic Resonance images. It was carried out from December 1996 to february 1997 with 277 male welders, the duration of welding was at least 5 years or more. The study was consisted of a questionnaire, physical examination and measurements of blood & urine manganese concentrations. Brain Magnetic Resonance imaging was done on 19 study subjects by random sampling. As the duration of welding increases, the positive rates of clinical symptoms, neurological examinations and blood manganese concentrations were also increased. However, physical examinations and urine manganese concentrations were not statistically significant with the duration of welding. Authors couldn't observe any Parkinsonism-like diseases. There were statistically significant correlations between duration of welding and blood manganese concentration(r=0.16, p<0.01). There were not statistically significant correlations between duration of welding and urine manganese concentrations (r=0.06). There were statistically significant correlations between blood & urine manganese concentration(r=0.34, p<0.01). By viewing brain Magnetic Resonance images, 13 welders(68.4 %) among 19 welders were found to have signal intensities. The positive rates of clinical symptoms, physical examinations, neurological examinations and blood & urine manganese concentrations were not statistically different between those with signal intensities and those without signal intensities. We would like to suggest that some non-specific clinical symptoms and neurological signs are correlated with the duration of welding but any Parkinsonism-like diseases had not been observed with these welders. Next we suggest that the high signal intensities on TlWI of brain Magnetic Resonance images are not the sign of manganese intoxication but the sign of manganese deposition.

  • This study aides at investigating the chang of habit in 'the Korean Catholic Womens's Religious Society' and analyzing its characteristics during the period from 1888 up to now. The research was carried out by investigating a wide range of documents including those on museums of religious society, and by considering the questionnaires and interviews on the present habit. The religious habit changed as a result of the social, cultural, and religious influence of period. The characteristics of their habit are analyzed in terms of four differnt periods as follow; (1) From the arrival of 'the Congregation of Sistersof 57 Paul de Chartres' to the year of Korean Endependence. (1888-1945) : The western style religious habit was introduced and settled later in korea by the members of forign religious society. The design of this religious halite might be originated from the mediaval times. (2) From the year of Korean Independence througt before the Vatican Council ll (1946 -1965) : Traditional habit style had been slowly modified. In this periord, ancient style coexisted with the reformed style. Also ordinary clothing style were observed in the religious society. (3) After the Vatican Council II(after 1965) : 'Decree on the up-to-date renewal of religious life'of the Vatican Council II affected strongly the traditional habile design. This led to a change from the ancient habit design to practical, modern and hygienic one. In addition, the habit was suited to the time and place as well as to the need of the apostolate. (4) Currently Situation(1996) : Mostly religious habit of korea is maintaining the style changed after the Vatican Council II. Present style is very simplyfied than the traditional one. But many religious societies make efforts for keeping the symbolic meaning of religious habit. All over the world, religious societies allowing ordinary clothes, but most korean women's religious societies still hold on religious habit.

  • Through advanced computer technology, our physical environment became a flexible and liquid space that is a multi-functional space structure, hetero-alliance, formless, interactivity. We attempt to interpretate Deleuze's Other geometry as a space designer. Hence first, the aim of this study is to define the meaning of the Other and Other geometry. Second, to extract keywords out of the Other geometry to analyze the work. Third, to analyze the work using the space formative languages(blob, blurring, distortion, folding, layering, lightness, nesting, repetition, shear, transparency, twisting, unfolding, warping, waving, and weaving). The 13 works were selected which have been issued after year 2000 with the focus on liquid space studies. The methods of this study are literature research and contents analysis. The results of the analysis were as follows. First, the source is the Other who is a hidden potentials in the surrounding environment, and this source has the capability of making it part of reality anytime. Other geometry means it is a theory that is comprised of various lines that with the kind of experiences that one has in life. Second, the key words that were extracted from the theory of Deleuze's Other geometry were of (1)hetero-alliance(reflected in a sculptured shape or a fluid abstract form), (2)dis-form(by speculating the user's movements, and combining space elements with external forces), (3)interactivity (information was exchanged real time between the user and his environment where the space took on a sensory institution). Finally, after studying the works using the space formative languages, we found that blob, warping, waving were used externally, and repetition, warping and waving for mostly used internally.
