  • Roll drafting, a mechanical operation attenuating fiber bundles to an appropriate thickness, is an important operation unit for manufacturing staple yams. It influences not only the linear density regularity of the slivers or staple yams that are produced, but also the quality of the textile product and the efficiency of the thereafter processes. In this research, the dynamic states of the fiber bundle in the roll drafting zone were analyzed by simulation, based on the mathematical model that describes the dynamic behavior of the flowing bundle. The state variables are the linear density and velocity of the fiber bundles and we simulated the dynamics states of the bundle flow, e.g., the profiles of the linear density and velocity in the draft zone for various values of the model parameters and boundary conditions, including the initial conditions to obtain their influence on the dynamic state. Results showed that the mean velocity profile of the fiber bundle was strongly influenced by draft ratio and process speed, while the input sliver linear density has hardly affected the process dynamics. Velocity variance of individual fibers that could be supposed to be a disturbing factor in drafting was also influenced by the process speed. But the major disturbance occurred due to the velocity slope discontinuity at the front roll, which was strongly influenced by the process speed. Thickness of input sliver didn't play any important role in the process dynamics.

  • The tidal river is a river affected by tide, which causes the water level to rise and fall two times everyday periodically. The local velocity across the river could be very fast because of the cross-sectional characteristics of the river even though it's not a rainy season. Therefore extreme local scour could take place around hydraulic structures such as piers and caissons due to backward flow velocity. For the construction of pier foundation of Ilsan-bridge In the Han River, the field observations were performed to get the velocity and water level. The numerical analysis was performed by HEC-RAS(UNET). The relationship between measured maximum velocity and calculated mean velocity is achieved, which is used to estimate the velocity and water level as the construction is proceeding. Countermeasures for scour were designed with the results of the hydraulic analysis to avoid potential damage during construction work. According to the results of monitoring, the velocity increase after temporary road embankment was negligible, from which it is considered that the degradation of main channel compensated for the constriction of cross-section by embankment.

  • The flow characteristics of film coolant issuing into turbulent boundary layer developing on a convex surface have been investigated by means of flow visualization and three-dimensional velocity measurement. The Schlieren optical system with a spark light source was adopted to visualize the jet trajectory injected at 35° and 90° inclination angles. A five-hole directional pressure probe was used to measure three-dimensional mean velocity components at the injection angle of 35°. Flow visualization shows that at the 90° injection, the jet flow is greatly changed near the jet exit due to strong interaction with the crossflow. On the other hand, the balance between radial pressure gradient and centrifugal force plays an important role to govern the jet flow at the 35° injection. The velocity measurement shows that at a velocity ratio of 0.5, the curvature stabilizes downstream flow, which results in weakening of the bound vortex structure. However, the injectant flow is separated from the convex wall gradually, and the bound vortex maintains its structure far downstream at a velocity ratio of 1.98 with two pairs of counter rotating vortices.

  • With an aim to assess the wind damage to urban trees in more realistic conditions, the nonlinear dynamics of structured trees subjected to strong winds with different levels is investigated in the present paper. For the logical treatment of dynamical behavior of trees, material nonlinearities of green wood associated with tree biomechanics and geometric nonlinearity of tree configuration are included. Applying simulated fluctuating wind velocity to the numerical model, the dynamical behavior of the structured tree is explored. A comparative study against the linear dynamics analysis usually involved in the previous researches is carried out. The failure wind velocity of urban trees is then defined, whereby the failure percentages of the tree components are exposed. Numerical investigations reveal that the nonlinear dynamics analysis of urban trees results in a more accurate solution of wind-induced response than the classical linear dynamics analysis, where the nonlinear effect of the tree behavior gives rise to be strengthened as increasing of the levels of wind velocity, i.e., the amplitude of 10-min mean wind velocity. The study of relationship between the failure percentage and the failure wind velocity provides a new perspective towards the vulnerability assessment of urban trees likely to fail due to wind actions, which is potential to link with the practical engineering.

  • Turbulent characteristics of turbulent pulsating flows were studied experimentally in a square duct. Velocity waveforms, velocity profiles, and turbulent intensity of turbulent pulsating flow were investigated by using a hot-wire anemometer with data acquisition and a processing system in a square duct with a ratio of 1 ($40mm{\times}40mm$) to 4,000mm long. Turbulent components were shown to be larger in decelerating than in accelerating regions and also larger for a large phase of velocity and U'rms distribution of turbulent flow. The effect of velocity amplitude ratio does not exist for specified time [${\theta}(z^{\prime})$], amplitude ratio (${\mid}U^{\prime}_{rms.os.1}{\mid}/{\mid}U_{m.os.1}{\mid}$), and phase difference (${\Delta}U^{\prime}_{rms.os.1}-{\Delta}U_{m.os.1}$) in either turbulent oscillating or cross-sectional mean velocity components. The effect of dimensionless angular frequency for specified time [${\theta}(z^{\prime})$] can be disregarded because the dimensionless angular frequency does not affect the specified time. The velocity distributions of turbulent pulsating flows for various time-averaged Reynolds numbers are in approximate agreement with the velocity distributions for equivalent Reynolds numbers and 1/7th power law of steady flow.

  • Background and Purpose: To evaluate the blood flow velocity using doppler ultrasound of the carotid artery, vertebral artery, and basilar artery in stroke patients Material and Methods: To evaluate the blood flow, I measured the peak systolic velocity and mean velocity of the common carotid artery(CCA), internal carotid artery(ICA), external carotid artery (ECA). vertebral artery(VA), and basilar artery(BA) in 44 stroke patients and 15 healthy adults. To investigate the difference between ischemic stroke patients and normal healthy adults, I selected 44 ischemic stroke patients diagnosed by brain CT and brain MRI, and 15 healthy adults who did not have any symptoms of stroke, hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes melitus. Results: Peak velocity in normal adults was 50.6${\pm}$1.6cm/sec in the CCA, 67.2${\pm}$1.7cm/sec in the ICA, 62.5${\pm}$2.4cm/see in the ECA, 45.5${\pm}$1.9cm/sec VA. and 50.5${\pm}$3.5cm/sec in the BA. Mean velocity in normal adults was 26.9${\pm}$1.1cm/sec in the CCA, 43.7${\pm}$1.4cm/sec in the ICA, 26.7${\pm}$1.3cm/sec in the ECA. 31.6${\pm}$1.9cm/sec in the VA and 33.0${\pm}$2.6cm/sec in the BA. In this study, there was a significant increase in the velocity of ICA, ECA, and VA of ischemic stroke patients in comparison with normal healthy adults. And the blood flow velocity of this study in the CCA and ECA was different from other reported foreign values and the other known values in my country. Conclusion: There was a significant difference in the blood flow velocity between ischemic stroke patients and normal healthy adults. And the blood flow velocity of this study was different from other reported foreign values and the other known values in my country. Therefore, it needs more detailed studies about old aged Korean and ischemic stroke patients than previous studies.

  • In this paper, COP (center of pressure) during quiet standing and squat-and-stand movement was analyzed to compare the postural control of young and elderly subjects with special interest in the elderly females who were reported to have higher fall rate than the elderly males. Subjects include the young subjects (10 males: $21.8{\pm}2.6yrs$, 10 females: $20.4{\pm}0.3yrs$) and the elderly subjects (8 males: $75.5{\pm}4yrs$, 8 females: $72.3{\pm}3.5yrs$). Analysis parameters were the mean of the distance between the instantaneous COP and the average COP (COP distance) and the mean of the COP movement velocity (COP velocity) in both AP (anterio-posterior) and ML (media-lateral) directions. During quiet standing, the COP distance in ML direction of elderly females was significantly greater than that of elderly males and the COP velocity of elderly females in both ML and AP direction were significantly greater than those of all the other groups. During squat and stand movement, the COP distance of elderly females was not significantly different with that of the elderly males. However, the COP velocity of elderly females was significantly greater than that of all the other groups. The large lateral weight shift (COP distance) of elderly females during quiet standing may explain their greater fall rate. However, this does not apply to squat-and stand movement. In contrast, COP velocity results show that the elderly females' COP is rapidly trembling compared to that of elderly males during both quiet standing and squat and-stand movement. This results suggest that rapid trembling or postural sway may reflect the reduced postural control ability and the risk of falling.

  • The purpose of this study is to apply pressurized plenum under floor air conditioning system to office areas to understand characteristics of indoor thermal environment based on forms of diffusers. For doing this, the author conducted experiment of module measurement, and based on the results, analyzed indoor temperature distribution and velocity distribution based on direction of diffusion by using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD), and estimated the Predicted Mean Vote(PMV) of residents based on forms of diffusers to present the optimal air conditioning of the pressurized plenum under floor air conditioning system in heating. The results of this study are as follows. First, as for forms of diffusers, distributed diffusers rather than conical and grill diffusers were favorable in maintaining $24^{\circ}C$, the established temperature in heating, were active in velocity flowing, and were wide in a radius of diffusion. Second, as for position of pressurizing, the difference between upper and lower temperature was wider in center, lateral, and dispersed pressurizing (in order). As for velocity distribution, the velocity was more increased in lateral, center, and dispersed pressurizing(in order), indicating that dispersed pressurizing maintained uniform thermal environment. Third, as for diffusion direction, mixed direction showed less difference between upper and lower temperature and the difference in velocity between center and lateral part was 0.01m/1, indicating that it maintained uniform thermal environment. Fourth, as for the PMV of residents based on the forms of diffusers, the dispersed type showed(+) values above (0) when applied variably based on the position of diffuser, presenting thermal feeling of "being comfortable" to residents.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze bradykinesia of toe tapping movement in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) as compared to those of normal subjects. 39 PD patients (age: $65.5{\pm}11.2$ yrs, H&Y stage:$2.3{\pm}0.5$), 14 eldelry subjects with comparable mean age ($65.0{\pm}3.9$ yrs) and 17 healthy young subjects ($24.1{\pm}2.1$ yrs) participated in this study. Angular velocity during repetitive toe tapping movement was measured in both feet using a gyro sensor system. Suggested quantitative measures of bradykinesia were root-mean-squared (RMS) angular velocity, RMS angle, peak power and total power which were derived from the angular velocity signal. ANOVA showed that all measures were significantly different among three groups (p<0.001). Subsequent post-hoc test revealed that all measures in PD patients were significantly smaller than in healthy elderly and healthy young subjects (p<0.02). All measures were significantly correlated with UPDRS scores(r=-0.689~-0.825). These results suggest that the developed system can be used as quantitative measures of the lower limb bradykinesia in PD patients.
