This paper presents the results of a detailed experimental examination of fully developed asymmetric flows between annular tubes with square-ribbed surface roughness. The main emphasis of the research has been on establishing the turbulence structure, particularly in the central region of the channel where the two dissimilar wall flows interact. Measurements have included profiles of time mean velocities, turbulence intensities, turbulent shear stresses, triple velocity correlations, skewness, and flatness. The region of greatest interaction is characterized by strong diffusional transport of turbulent shear stress and kinetic energy from rough toward the smooth wall region, giving rise to an appreciable separation between the planes of zero shear stresses depending on positions of roughness on the walls.

Four turbulent $k-{\varepsilon}$ models (i.e., standard model, modified models with streamline curvature modification and/or preferential dissipation modification) are applied in order to analyze the turbulent flow of wall-attaching offset jet. For numerical convergence, this paper develops a method of slowly increasing the convective effect induced by skew-velocity in skew-upwind scheme (hereafter called Partial Skewupwind Scheme). Even though the method was simple, it was efficient in view of convergent speed, computer memory storage, programming, etc. The numerical results of all models show good prediction in first order calculations (i.e., reattachment length, mean velocity, pressure), while they show some deviations in ·second order (i.e., kinetic energy and its dissipation rate). Like the previous results obtained by upwind scheme, the streamline curvature modification results in better prediction, while the preferential dissipation modification does not.

An experimental study on the flow over the axisymmetric backward-facing step was carried out. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of the boundary layer thickness at the separation point on the reattachment length and to understand the structure of the recirculating flows. Local mean and fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separating and reattaching axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over the wall of convex cylinder placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. The study demonstrated that the reattachment length increases with increasing boundary layer thickness. It was also observed that the reverse flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy decrease with an increase in the momentum thickness at the separation point. The measured velocity field suggests that the boundary layer thickness at the separation can affect definitely on the formation of corner eddy.
A study to obtain the enhancement of turbulence at low Reynolds number is carried out by adding ultrasonic force into the jet flow field of a coaxial circular pipe which can afford the sufficient data of flow characteristics with the shear flow and turbulence flow in spite of its simple shape. A coaxial circular flow field is made vertically in a large and transparent acryl tank. The time mean velocity vector, distribution, kinetic energy and turbulence intensity formed in the complex flow field of turbulence enhancement are investigated, observed and discussed at Reynolds number of 2,000, 3,000 and 5,000 by using PIV measurement, in results, the validity of ultrasonic to obtain the enhancement of turbulence is certified.

This paper reports the characteristics of the three dimensional turbulent flow in the 180 degree bends with decreasing cross-sectional area by numerical method. Calculated pressure and velocity, Reynolds stress distributions are compared to the experimental data. Turbulence model employed are low Reynolds number k-epsilon model and algebraic stress model. The results show that the main vortex generated from the inlet part of the bend maintained to outlet of the bend because of the contraction of cross-sectional area. The rate of increase of turbulent kinetic energy through the bend are lower than that of mean flow. Secondary flow strength of the flow is lower about 60% than that of square duct flow.
In order to fast predict the wind-driven current in a small bay, a convolution method in which the wind-driven current can be generated only wih the local wind is developed and applied in the Sachon Bay. The root mean square(rms) ratio defined as the ratio of the rms error to the rms speed is 0.37. The rms ratio is generally less than 0.2, except for all the mouths of Junju Bay and Namhae-do and in the region between Saryang Island and Sachon. The spatial average of the recover rate of kinetic energy(rrke) is 87%. Thus, the predicted wind-driven current by the convolution model is in a good agreement with the computed one by the numerical model. The raio of the difference between observed residual current (Vr) and predicted wind-driven current (Vc) to a residual current, that is, (Vr-Vc)/Vr shows 56%, 62% at 2 moorings in the Sachon Bay.

The unsteady flow in three-dimensional cubic cavity with narrow channel at upper region is investigated experimentally for three kinds of Reynolds number, 1*10/sup 4/, 3*10/sup 4/ and 5*10/sup 4/ based on the cavity width and cavity inlet mean flow velocity. Instant velocity vectors are obtained simultaneously at whole field by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). Wall pressure distributions are estimated using Poisson equation from the velocity data. Results of PIV reveal that severe unsteady flow fluctuation within the cavity are remarkable at all Reynolds numbers and sheared mixing layer phenomena are also found at the region where inlet driving flow is collided with the clock-wise rotating main primary vortex. Instant velocity profiles reveal that deformed forced vortex formation is observed throughout the entire region and spanwise kinetic energy migration is conspicuous.

Comparisons of joint probability density distribution obtained from the raw data of measured droplet sizes and velocities in a transient diesel fuel spray with computed joint probability density function were made. Simultaneous droplet sizes and velocities were obtained using PDPA. Mathematical probability density functions which can fit the experimental distributions were extracted using the principle of maximum likelihood. Through the statistical process of functions, mean droplet diameters, non-dimensional mass, momentum and kinetic energy were estimated and compared with the experimental ones. A joint log-hyperbolic density function presents quite well the experimental joint density distribution which were extracted from experimental data.

This study is concerned with the critical evaluation of predicative capability of a k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model using the Renormalization Group(RNG) theory. The present numerical model for solution of the Navier-Stokes System is based on the modified PISO algorithms. Computations have been performed with the RNG-based K-$\varepsilon$ model for the two-dimensional flow over a backward-facing step, a confined coaxial jet, and a swirling flow in a swirl combustor. Numerical results are compared with experimental data in terms of mean flow velocities, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulent stresses. Numerical results clearly indicate that the RNG-based K-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model shows a significant improvement over a standard K-$\varepsilon$ model in predicting the turbulent flows with flow separation and swirl.
Direct numerical simulations are peformed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow suddenly subjected to spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces in the near-wall region. The Reynolds number based on the inlet momentum thickness and free-stream velocity is $Re_\theta=300$. A fully-implicit fractional step method is employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses are obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin-friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electro-magnetic forces. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques are used to observe the response of streamwise vortices to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are clearly affected by spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces.
