  • The generated sequences of monthly flows were analyzed based on the range concept. With the optimum operation rule of the reservoirs as the one which maximizes the wateruse downstream the waterrelease from the reservoir was determined and with \ulcorner consideration to the mean inflows and the range of monthly flows the required reservoirs capacity was stochastically determind. It is suggested that the result obtained in this study would be applied to approximately estimate, in the stage of preliminary design, the required capacity of a reservoir in question with the limited information such as the mean monthly inflow and the period of reservoir operation. For the determination of a reservoir capacity Rippl's mass-curve method has been long used with the past river flow data assuming the same flow records will be repeated in the future. This study aims to find out a better method for determining the reservoir capacity by employing the analytical theory based on the stochastic process. For the present study the synthetic generation methods of Thomas-Fiering type was used to synthetically generate 50 years of monthly river inflows to three single-purpose reservoirs and three multi-purpose reservoirs.

  • A sandwich ELISA (sELISA) to detect pork in processed foods was developed using goat anti-pig IgG antibodies. From the sELISA standard curve, the detection range of pork was $3-1,000{\mu}g/mL$. The cross-reactivity between the pig IgG antibodies, pork, and other meats (beef, chicken, fish, and crustaceas) was 100, 0.18, and 0%, respectively. When pork was heated for 10 min, the mean assay recoveries of pig-IgG were 79-32% at $60-70^{\circ}C$ and less than 0.11% at $80^{\circ}C$ or higher. When pork was spiked into cream soup, weaning food, fish paste, and sauce, the mean assay recoveries were 8.8, 45, 36, and 39%, respectively. In 12 commercial processed foods, the assay results coincided qualitatively with the food labels on the packages.

  • Hydraulic conductivity k is one of the most important engineering properties of soil. However, both field and laboratory procedures fur the determination of k are often tedious and expensive. This paper presents new models to predict k using statistical parameters from grain size distribution. A number of permeability tests far 36 types of sands mixed based on statistics were conducted to develop the regression-based models. Parameters used to estimate k are both the geometric mean and geometric standard deviation of the soil samples, or the particle-size distribution curve parameters such as D_{10},D_{50},D_{60}. Hydraulic conductivity predicted by this model is in good agreement with the laboratory measurements fir the soil samples obtained at 20 locations within the Korean Peninsula. The performances of the proposed models were also compared with those of existing models including Hazen's.

  • This paper is to evaluate the fatigue strength of lap joints of materials applied to LNG carrier cargo containment of GAZ-TRANSPORT(GT) type, which was welded by manual and automatic TIG welding process. The thicknesses of lapped members were 1.5mm/1.5mm or 1.5mm/0.7mm in Invar to Invar joint, and 1.5mm/8.0mm in Invar to stainless steel joint, respectively. These lap joints were mainly applied to the membrance fabrication of GT-LNG carrier. Fatigue tests of Invar/Inar lap joints were conducted under the stress ratio R=0 at room temperature. The effect of mean stress and cumulative fatigue damage on the allowable stress of Invar lap joint was evaluated on the basis of test results. Fatigue test was also conducted on Inver/Stainless steel lap joints welded by automatic TIG process without filler metals. The fatigue test of the joint was carried out under the same conditions as those of Invar/invar lap joints. The fatigue strength of the joint welded without filler metal was comparable to those welded with filler metal quoted from reference. The fatigue strength of Invar/stainless steel lap joint was only dependent on the lap throat thickness, and not on the welding process. Based on test results, the applicability of TIG welding process without filler metal in Invar/stainless steel lap joint was reviewed by controlling welding variables to assure the valid throat thickness of lap joints.

  • Purpose: The main cause of death due to acute organophosphate (OP) poisoning is believed acute respiratory failure caused by cholinergic reactions. Recently, advances in respiratory and intensive care make it possible to maintain the respiratory function of patients with OP poisoning, but the mortality rates remain high. The present study clarified the hemodynamics of patients with acute lethal OP poisoning. The purpose of this study was to analyse the outcomes and predictors of mortality in patients with acute OP poisoning requiring intensive care. Methods: We reviewed medical and intensive care records of patients with acute OP poisoning admitted to emergency department and ICU between March 1998 and Aug 2005. We collected patient information regarding poisoning, clinical, and demographic features. Results: During the study period, 67 subjects treated with intensive care and ventilator management in addition to gastric decontamination standard therapy with atropine and 2-PAM. Of 67 patients, 13 died. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis demonstrated a steep decline in the cumulative survival to $86.6\%$ during the first week. Mean arterial pressure < 60 mmHg within the first 24 hours was recognized as a poor prognostic indicators among mechanical ventilated patients. Conclusion: Most OP poisoning-related deaths occurred within the first week of poisoning. Mean arterial pressure lower than 60 mmHg might be the best predictor of poor outcome. We speculated that the refractory hypotension is the leading cause of death in patients with lethal OP poisoning that receiving mechanical ventilation and maximal supportive care.

  • Point & nonpoint source pollutant loads were calculated in Juam lake watershed using GIS, and water quality was simulated using water quality model. Point source pollutant loads were estimated using the unit pollutant loads presented by the Ministry of Environment(MOE, 1998). Nonpoint source pollutant loads were estimated using the value of the direct runoff multiplied by expected mean concentration. The direct runoff was calculated using SCS curve number method. Water quality simulation was conducted using WASP model(2001) developed by U.S. EPA. In order to apply the model, Juam lake watershed was divided into 44 subbasins according to slope, elevation, soil type, landuse and precipitation. Then the model was applied to one subbasin. Simulation results were compared to observed values and the result should good agreement with each other.

  • The photosynthetic characteristics of three Ligularia species, L. fischeri, L. fischeri var. spiciformis and L. stenocephala under-tree cultivated in Dunnae-myeon, Hoengsung-gun were measured and compared. Total mean photosynthetic rate increased with increasing the light intensity up to 2,000 PPFD. Mean photosynthetic rate of L. fischeri increased to maximum value of $21.1{\mu}mol\;CO_{2}m^{-2}s^{-1}$ with increasing the light intensity up to 1,600 PPFD, but it was decreased at 2,000 PPFD. The highest photosynthetic rate was shown in L. fischeri var. spiciformis, followed by L. fischeri, and L. stenocephala. was the highest $27.39{\mu}mol\;CO_{2}m^{-2}s^{-1}$ among three species, followed by that of The differences in photosynthetic rates were significantly different among the species each measuring date. L. fischeri var. spiciformis was more adaptive species at the low elevated under-tree cultivated sites, such as, Sanchemaeul Dunnae-myeon Hoeyngseung-gun than L. fischeri and L. stenocephala.

  • A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) assay has been developed for the determination of ketorolac in human serum using a new extraction method with a good recovery. Human serum samples (1.0 ml) spiked with known concentrations of ketorolac tromethamine and 10${\mu}g$ of ketoprofen as the internal standard (IS) were acidified with 200${\mu}l$ of 1 N HCl and extracted with 7 ml of n-hexane-ether (7:3 v/v). Extracts were centrifuged and organic layer was back-extracted with 400${\mu}l$ of 0.1% tromethamine solution. Twenty .mu.l of centrifuged aqueous layer was injected onto a reversed-phase octyl column and eluted with a mixture of acetonitrile, water, methanol, and triethylamine [35:55:10:0.1 (v/v), pH 3.0] at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. Ultraviolet detection of ketorolac and IS was carried out at 300 nm. The calibration curve obtained using peak area ratios showed a good linearity (in concentration range 10-150 ng/ml $r^2$=O.9944; in range 50-2000 ng/ml, r$^{2}$=0.9998). The mean intra-day accuracy and precision for this HPLC method were found to be 3.6 and 3.7%, respectively. The mean inter-day accuracy and precision were found to be 4.0 and 3.7%, respectively, in the concentration range 50-2000 ng/ml. The recovery of ketorolac from serum was 92.0 $({\pm}5.7)$ % at the concentration of 100 ng/ml. This method proved to be readily applicable to the assay of ketorolac in human serum.

  • In chip plating, several parameters must be taken into consideration. Current density, solution concentration, pH, solution temperature, components volume, chip and media ratio, barrel geometrical shape were most likely found to have an effect to the process yields. The 3 types of barrels utilized in chip plating industry are the onventional rotating barrel, vibrational barrel(vibarrel), and the centrifugal type. Conventional rotating barrel is a close type and is commonly used. The components inside the barrel are circulated by the barrel's rotation at a horizontal axis. Process yield has known to have higher thickness deviation. The vibrational barrel is an open type which offers a wide exposure to electrolyte resulting to a stable thickness deviation. It rotates in a vertical axis coupled with multi-vibration action to facilitate mixed up and easy transportation of components. The centrifugal barrel has its plated work centrifugally compacted against the cathode ring for superior electrical contact with simultaneous rotary motion. This experiment has determined the effect of barrel vibration intensity to the plating thickness distribution. The procedures carried out in the experiment involved the overall plating process., cleaning, rinse, Nickel plating, Tin-Lead plating. Plating time was adjusted to meet the required specification. All other parameters were maintained constant. Two trials were performed to confirm the consistency of the result. The thickness data of the experiment conducted showed thatbthe average mean value obtained from higher vibrational intensity is nearer to the standard mean. The distribution curve shown has a narrower specification limits and it has a reduced variation around the target value. Generally, intensity control in vi-barrel facilitates mixed up and easy transportation of components. However, it is desirable to maintain an optimum vibration intensity to prevent solution intrusion into the chips' internal electrode. A cathodic reaction can occur in the interface of the external and internal electrode. 2H20 + e $\rightarrow$M/TEX> 20H + H2.. Hydrogen can penetrate into the body and create pressure which can cause cracks. At high intensity, the chip's motion becomes stronger, its contact between each other is delayed and so plating action is being controlled. However, the strong impact created by its collision can damage the external electrode's structure there by resulting to bad plating condition.

  • A sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method (sELISA) for detecting the presence of shrimp in processed foods was developed using rabbit polyclonal antibodies against tropomyosin produced by black tiger prawns (shrimp). Based on the standard curve derived using this method, the detection range of shrimp was determined to be $1-100{\mu}g/mL$. The cross-reactivity of these antibodies toward black tiger prawns, fleshy prawns, cocktail prawns, lobster, and blue crab was 100, 73, 155, 18, and 0%, respectively. When shrimp was heated for 10 min, the mean assay recovery of tropomyosin was 121-221% at $70-100^{\circ}C$ and 7.8% at $121^{\circ}C$. When shrimp was added to cream soup, weaning food, sausage, fish paste, and sauce, the mean assay recovery was 397, 639, 168, 234, and 0%, respectively. In sample tests involving 14 commercial items, the coincidence ratio of assay results and reference was 79%.
