어성초 생육 시기 및 부위별 Quercetin과 Tannin 함량 비교 (Comparison of Quercetin and Souble Tannin in Houttuynia cordata $T_{HUNB}.$ according to Growth Stages and Plant Parts)

  • 약용작물은 재배환경, 재배방법, 생육 시기 및 부위별로 약리성분 함량에 차이가 많은데, 이뇨, 진통, 지혈, 조직재생 및 혈관확장 등의 약리효과가 있다고 보고된 어성초를 생육 시기별, 부위별 및 퇴비 시용량별로 유효성분 함량을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 생육 시기별 quercetin 및 tannin 함량은 생육 초기인 4월 20일에 채취하였을 때 각각 0.72, 2.1%로 함량이 가장 높았으며, 개화기 전까지 감소하다가 개화기 이후로 증가하였다. 부위별 quercetin 및 tannin 함량은 꽃에서 2.06, 5.3%로 가장 높았으며, 잎, 줄기, 뿌리 중에서는 잎에서 각각 0.81 및 2.3%로 높았다. 퇴비 시용량별 어성초의 quercetin 및 tannin함량은 무처리구에서 각각 0.67 및 2.3%로 가장 높았고, 퇴비시용량이 증가할 수록 지상부 수량은 증가하였으나 유효성분 함량은 감소하였다.

Biological Characteristics of the Ginseng Stem Fungus Gnat (Phytosciara procera) and Its Environmental-friendly Control Using Modified Topping of Ginseng Peduncles

  • This study examined the biological characteristics of the insect and examined potential cultural controls using peduncle topping methods. Ginseng stem fungus gnat eggs hatched after 5 days; ecdysis lasted 3-4 weeks, and after 5 days pupation, adults emerged. Adults deposited eggs 1-2 days after emerging, and the entire life cycle lasted 32-40 days. The fungus gnats laid eggs $327\times220{\mu}m$ in size on cut planes of stems, but not on intact stem parts that had not been topped or wounded. Analyses of major weather data for the experimental areas and weather data for the past 30 years acquired from the Korea Meteorological Administration revealed that fungus gnat dispersion was prevalent under highly humid conditions and in areas with thick and frequent fogging. Among the topping times examined, fungus gnat damage to ginseng was lowest when topping occurred in late May. Among the five different topping methods evaluated on experimental ginseng farms, the cumulative fungus gnat damage to ginseng was low (0.8%) under partial peduncle topping (removal of peduncle with lateral fruit remaining) and removal of only flower buds (0.6%), with fungus gnat control effects of 82% and 86%, respectively, compared to conventional topping (removal of peduncle about 5 cm above its base). No fungus gnat damage to ginseng was observed under the no-topping treatment. These results suggest that partial topping of peduncles, while letting lateral fruits remain, is a potentially environmentally friendly method of controlling the ginseng stem fungus gnat.

The monitoring of heavy metals (lead and cadmium) in honeys consumed in Incheon region

  • This study was conducted to investigate the contents of lead (Pb) and cadmium(Cd) in honeys (n=60) from April to May in 2004 and to provide the scientific basis for heavy metal regulations of Korea Food Code. The samples were digested with acids, then analyzed for the contents of Pb and Cd by an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP). The contents of Pb and Cd [minimum-maximum (mean)] were 0.189-1.82 mg/kg (0.568) and not detected (ND)-0.016 mg/kg (0.0008) in domestic acacia honeys (n=20), ND-1.702 mg/kg (0.329) and ND-0.243 mg/kg (0.013) in domestic wild flower honeys (n= 18), ND-0.322 mg/kg (0.073), ND-0.027 mg/kg (0.002) in imported honeys (n=13), ND-3.754 mg/kg (0.671) and ND-0.658 mg/kg (0.073) in foreign honeys (n=9) brought by Korean travellers, respectively. According to the results, foreign honeys brought by Korean travellers were detected with the highest level of Pb and Cd. Therefore, we recommend that heavy metals of domestic and foreign honeys should be continuously monitored. It is also thought that these results could be the important references to establish the standard of Pb and Cd in honey.

동부(Vigna unguiculata)의 종자 생산 요소에 미치는 모식물과 부식물의 영향 (Maternal and Paternal Effects on Seed Yield Components in Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata))

  • We investigated the effects of maternal and paternal parentage, and ovule position in a pod on seed development, weight, and progeny performance, using an annual crop commonly called cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.). The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse. Nine maternal parents were randomly selected, and 3 individuals were chosen as paternal parents based on the male fitness components. Five types of hand-pollination were attempted on each flower of the maternal plants to evaluate the influence of paternal identify. Independent variables such as parentage and ovule position affected the pattern of seed development. Ovules in the middle position of the pod exhibited a much higher probability of seed maturation than those at the stylar and basal positions, confirming the position effect. These independent variables also appeared to exert a significant effect on seed weight, although it was not possible to evaluate the relative importance of those variables due to a significant interaction between parents. Mixed pollination tended to yield heavier seeds than other paternal parents. Ovules in the middle and basal end positions produced heavier seeds than those at the stylar end regardless of maternal and paternal parentage. Seed weight was independent of all measurements of progeny performance. At week 2 after germination significant paternal effects were found to be mediated through the ovule position in a pod. In particular, the progeny derived from self-pollination performed worse than the progeny from other paternal parentage. The progeny performance at week 4 after germination was affected by maternal parents independently of seed weight. These results show that paternal and maternal effects were quite consistent from the seed development to early growth of the progeny. Consequently, maternal and paternal effects on seed development and weight, and progeny performance may reflect, at least to some extent, genetic contribution of both parents. If so, it is possible for sexual selection on maternal and paternal function to generate the evolution of reproductive traits related to seed production.

  • The importance of wild plant resources along with the development of high biotecyhnology is highlighted for exploitation of new materials which can make the added value. The goal of this study is providing fundamental data bases for developing new materials through the analyses of morphological characteristics, antibiotics and molecular cytogenetics in Baegseon (Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz.). Baegseon has several characteristics; there are two types of flower color, pink and white, the seed germination starts about February 20th, the maximum flowering season is around May 17th in southern Korea, the growth period is about 60 days. The number of chromosomes are 2n=2x=36, the size of chromosomes in metaphase is $4.2{\sim}8.1{\mu}m$. The amount of 2C nuclear DNA is 1.93pg, and there is no variation of genome size amoung varieties. The extraction juice of baegseon young roots has the excellent antibiotic activity against the mold (Botrytis cinerea).

A WUSCHEL Homeobox Transcription Factor, OsWOX13, Enhances Drought Tolerance and Triggers Early Flowering in Rice

  • Plants have evolved strategies to cope with drought stress by maximizing physiological capacity and adjusting developmental processes such as flowering time. The WOX13 orthologous group is the most conserved among the clade of WOX homeodomain-containing proteins and is found to function in both drought stress and flower development. In this study, we isolated and characterized OsWOX13 from rice. OsWOX13 was regulated spatially in vegetative organs but temporally in flowers and seeds. Overexpression of OsWOX13 (OsWOX13-ov) in rice under the rab21 promoter resulted in drought resistance and early flowering by 7-10 days. Screening of gene expression profiles in mature leaf and panicles of OsWOX13-ov showed a broad spectrum of effects on biological processes, such as abiotic and biotic stresses, exerting a cross-talk between responses. Protein binding microarray and electrophoretic mobility shift assay analyses supported ATTGATTG as the putative cis-element binding of OsWOX13. OsDREB1A and OsDREB1F, drought stress response transcription factors, contain ATTGATTG motif(s) in their promoters and are preferentially expressed in OsWOX13-ov. In addition, Heading date 3a and OsMADS14, regulators in the flowering pathway and development, were enhanced in OsWOX13-ov. These results suggest that OsWOX13 mediates the stress response and early flowering and, thus, may be a regulator of genes involved in drought escape.

고추 역병 저항성 재료의 특성평가와 종자 증식 (Evaluation and Seed Increase of Sources of Resistance to Phytophthora capsici in Pepper)

  • 역병 저항성 재료로 도입하여 유지하고 있는 PI123469, PI201234, PI201232, AC2258 (=Line 29), CM334, KC268, KC358, KC820, KC821, KC822, KC823 (Line 29 = AC2258), KC462, KC463, KC464 혹은 이들 유전자원에서 선발한 계통들의 역병에 대한 저항성 검정, 원예적 특성 조사 및 종자증식을 실시하였다. PI123469, PI201234, PI201232, AC2258, KC823에서 선발된 계통들이 가장 저항성이 강한 것으로 나타났다. 동일한 유전자원에서 선발한 계통 간에도 저항성 수준에서 현저한 차이가 관찰되는 경우가 있었으며, 이러한 경우는 주로 유지 증식과정에 자연교잡이 일어난 결과로 추정되었다. 따라서 순도 높은 저항성 재료를 얻기 위해서는 봉지를 씌워 자식종자를 채종하는 것이 가장 안전하며, 다음으로는 계통 망실 혹은 망상을 이용하는 것이 바람직한 것으로 판단되었다.

Positive Effect of Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiatives on Improving Mothers' Intention for Successful Breastfeeding in Korea

  • Background: In Korea, the breastfeeding (BF) rate of infants aged 6 months or more is drastically decreasing, and this phenomenon is particularly worrisome for the future health of the population. The present study aimed to identify an antenatal strategy for initiation and continuation of human BF, and to identify how Baby-Friendly Hospitals (BFHs) may positively influence the intention to breastfeed. Methods: A total of 414 pregnant Korean antenatal women were surveyed using questionnaires to determine current knowledge of the benefits of human breast milk, whether they planned to breastfeed after delivery, to continue BF after reinstatement in the workforce, are willing to abide by rooming-in care for infants, and plan to give birth at BFHs. Results: We found that planning room-in care, greater awareness of BF benefits for infant and mother, participation in antenatal education programs, and provision of BF facilities in the workplace were positively associated with plans for exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and longer BF duration. The mothers who planned to give birth at BFHs also desired to breastfeed immediately after birth, implement in-room care, continue BF at their workplace, participate in antenatal BF educational programs, and were more aware of the benefits of BF. Conclusion: If the beneficial effects of BFHs were well known to individuals, these would enhance the success rate of BF in Korea. Antenatal education and consequent acquisition of better knowledge of the benefits of BF are important for increasing the rate of BF practices.

히어리(Corylopsis coreana)에 있어서 삽목시기에 따른 발근력의 변화 (Change of Rooting Potential as Affected by Cutting Time in Corylopsis coreana)

  • 본 연구는 한국특산식물인 히어리의 대량번식을 위하여 생장패턴과 관련한 삽목적기를 알아보고자 수행되었다. 히어리의 신초는 4월초 개화 직후에 발생이 되었다. 발생한 신초는 6월말까지 급속하게 생장을 하다가 그 후에는 생장속도가 다소 둔화되어 정지하는 전형적인 온대성 낙엽활엽수의 1차적인 생장곡선을 나타내었다. 삽수의 수분함량은 신초발생 이후 5월까지 증가하다가 그 후 수분이 감소하는 경향이었다. 6월 20일의 수분함량은 71.2%였다. 히어리는 숙지삽에 비해 당년지를 이용한 녹지삽이 삽목번식에 유리하였다. 당년지를 삽목한 5월부터 9월까지도 삽목시기에 따라 큰 차이가 있었는데, 특히 6월 20일에 삽목하였을때 발근력이 타 시기에 비해 월등하게 좋았다.

카모마일 꽃 추출물의 Candida albicans 기인성 감염성 관절염에 대한 효과 (Effect of Chamomile Flower Extract on Septic Arthritis due to Candida albicans)

  • In the present studies, we examined effect of chamomile flowers extract (CH-Ex), which has traditionally been used as antiphlogistics in Europe for many centuries, against Candida albicans-caused septic arthritis. Candida albicans is a major etiological agent among fungal septic arthritis. This effect was investigated in a murine model of the septic arthritis. That is, mice that were given an emulsion form of C. albicans cell wall (CACW) via footpad route were treated intraperitoneally with the CH-Ex for 3 times every 3 days. Degrees of the footpad-swellings were measured with dial gauger. Data showed that the CH-Ex resulted in the reduction of swelling. For instance, at Day 9 when swelling reached the highest peak, there was up to app. 60% reduction of edema in mice injected with the CH-Ex, compared to that of the control mice that received no treatment (P<0.05). This therapeutic anti-arthritic activity appeared to be mediated by inhibitions of NO (nitric oxide) production from activated RAW264.7 macrophages and proliferation of Con A-treated T lymphocytes. Analysis by HPLC revealed that the CH-Ex contained eight polyphenolic compounds including chlorogenic acid (CRA) and rutin. We have reported the CRA and rutin respectively have the anti-arthritic activity. This correlation implicates that CRA and rutin in the CH-Ex may be responsible for the activity. Combined all together, the CH-Ex has anti-arthritic activity against C. albicans-caused septic arthritis, possibly by inhibiting NO production and proliferation of T cells. This activity seems to be contributed by, at least, CRA and rutin among the compounds in the CH-Ex.
