  • The effect of spreading gain control on the throughput of a CDMA slotted ALOHA system is considered. Mobile users transmit packets over a shared channel, and the packets transmitted in the same time slot over the shared channel act as simultaneous access interference (SAI). When using spread-spectrum signal, a CDMA slotted ALOHA channel achieves high probability of capture due to the property of high title resolution, and the bit rate of user information is determined by spreading gain. When the SAI level gets larger, the high value of spreading gain enhances the packet throughput by increasing the probability of a successful packet transmission, while it degrades the of the effective throughput by reducing the user information bits carried within a packer. To solve the problem, we investigated the effect of the capture probability and the SAI level on these system throughputs, and evaluated the throughput performance of the system for each spreading gain control scheme. The results showed that the maximum effective throughput could be achieved with an unified method despite the variation of the SAI level by deriving an optimal value of the spreading gain according to 171e system states.

  • The line width of circuits in semiconductor devices continues to decrease down to a few nanometers. Since nanoparticles attached to the patterned wafer surface may cause malfunction of the devices, it is crucial to remove the contaminant nanoparticles. Physical cleaning that utilizes momentum of liquid for detaching solid nanoparticles has recently been tested in place of the conventional chemical method. Dropwise impaction has been employed to increase the removal efficiency with expectation of more efficient momentum exchange. To date, most of relevant studies have been focused on drop spreading behavior on a horizontal surface in terms of maximum spreading diameters and average spreading velocity of drop. More important is the local liquid velocity at the position of nanoparticle, very near the surface, rather than the vertical average value. In addition, there are very scarce existing studies dealing with microdroplet impaction that may be desirable for minimizing pattern demage of the wafer. In this study, we investigated the local velocity distribution in spreading liquid film under various impaction conditions through the CFD simulation. Combining the numerical results with the particle removal model, we estimated an effective cleaning diameter (ECD), which is a measure of the particle removal capacity of a single drop, and presented the predicted ECD data as a function of droplet's velocity and diameter particularly when the droplets are microns in diameter.

  • Among the operating limits of a heat pipe, the capillary limit is significantly affected by the characteristics of the wick, which is determined by the capillary performance. The major parameters for determining capillary performance are the maximum capillary pressure and the spreading characteristics that can be expected through the wick. A well-designed wick structure improves capillary performance and helps improve the stability of the heat pipe by enhancing the capillary limit. The capillary performance can be improved by forming a porous microstructure on the surface of the wick structure through surface modification techniques. In this study, a microstructure is formed on the surface of the wick by using a surface modification method (i.e., an electrochemical etching process). In the experiment, specimens are prepared using stainless-steel screen mesh wicks with various fabrication conditions. In addition, the spreading and capillary rise performances are observed with low-surface-tension fluid to quantify the capillary performance. In the experiments, the capillary performance, such as spreading characteristics, maximum capillary pressure, and capillary rise rate, improves in the specimens with microstructures formed through surface modification compared with the specimens without microstructures on the surface. The improved capillary performance can have a positive effect on the capillary limit of the heat pipe. It is believed that the surface microstructures can enhance the operational stability of heat pipes.

  • A multi-media variable processing gain DS/CDMA system are considered. Two types of information sources with different rates and transmitting powers are assumed to be stransmitted simultaneously in the same channel. Average signal-to-noise ratios at the correlation receiver outputs for each type of information sources are analytically derived as funtions of partial cross-correlations between spreading code sequences. As the difference of information rates between information sources increase, the difference between signal-to-noise ratio regarding random spreading code and that regarding pseudo random spreading code increases (maximum 1.3dB). The result can provide a analytical tools for use in multi-media DS/CDMA system design.

  • The growing interest towards ultra-wideband (UWB) communications stems from its unique features such as baseband operation, ample multipath diversity, and the potential of enhanced user capacity. But since UWB has to overlay existing narrowband systems, multiple access has to be achieved in the presence of narrowband interference (NBI). However, existing baseband spreading codes for UWB multiple access are not flexible in handling NBI. In this paper, we introduce two novel spreading codes that not only enable baseband UWB multiple access, but also facilitate flexible NBI cancellation. We construct our codes using a single carrier or multiple carriers (SC or MC), which can be implemented with standard discrete-cosine transform (DCT) circuits. With our SC/MC codes, NBI can be avoided by simply nulling undesired digital carriers. Being digital, these SC/MC codes give rise to multiband UWB systems, without invoking analog carriers. In addition, our SC/MC codes enable full multipath diversity, and maximum coding gains. Equally attractive is their capability to reduce the number of interfering users, with simple matched filter operations. Comprehensive simulations are also carried out to corroborate our analysis.

  • Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading continues to be a major cause of damage to deep foundations. Currently there is a huge uncertainty associated with the maximum lateral pressures and forces applied by the liquefied soil to deep foundations. Furthermore, recent centrifuge and is shaking table tests of pile foundations indicate that the permeability of the liquefied sand is an extremely important and poorly understood factor. This article presents experimental results and analysis of one of the centrifuge tests that were conducted at the 150 g-ton RPI centrifuge to investigate the effect of soil permeability in the response of single piles and pile groups to lateral spreading.

  • In this study, the behavior of water or nanofluid droplets impacting upon a hot surface was investigated by visualization of impacting phenomena with time-delayed photographic technique. Changing the mass ratio of nanofluid and the temperature of the heated surface, the characteristics of the spreading behavior and the diameter of spreading liquid film was compared between water and nanofluid droplets. The impacting droplet spreaded as a liquid film after impact and nanofluid droplets spreaded more widely than water droplets. After reaching the maximum diameter, water droplets shrinked more than nanofluid droplets. Based on this, the heat transfer area from a hot surface to impacting nanofluid droplets would be wider than that of impacting water droplets. Considering individual impacting droplet only, spray cooling using nanofluid would be better than using water.

  • The present study investigates the effect of fire growth model on fire development characteristics in a carriage. The parallel processing version of FDS code is used to simulate the fire driven flow in a carriage and two types of fire growth model which are flame spread model and t$^2$ model are examined for the same geometrical condition. The heat release rates(HRR) of both model are similar each other until 30 s after ignition, but the flame spread model predicts 5 times higher than those of the t$^2$ fire model during the quasi-steady fire period. Maximum heat release rate in the case of flame spread model reaches about to 12 MW at 100 s after fire ignition. Also, various database of fire properties for combustible materials and more elaborate combustion model considering the flame spreading phenomena are required for better predictions of fire development characteristics using numerical simulation.

  • In this paper, a media access control protocol is proposed for voice/data integrated services in the packet CDMA network, and the performance of the proposed protocol is analyzed. The proposed protocol uses the spreading code sensing and the reservation schemes. This protocol gives higher priority to the delay-sensitive voice traffic than to the data traffic. A voice terminal can reserve an available spreading code during a talkspurt to transmit multiple voice packets. On the other hand, whenever a data packet is generated, the data terminal transmits the packet through one of the available spreading codes that are not used by the voice terminals. In this protocol, the voice packets do not come into collision with the data packets. The numerical results show that this protocol can increase the maximum number of voice terminals. The performance for the data traffic degrades by increasing the voice traffic load because of the low priority. But it shows that the data traffic performance can be increased in proportion to the number of spreading codes.

  • An automatic spreading fire extinguisher usually installed in a closed area like a boiler room, a laundry store or a restaurant's kitchen room is one of the fire protection equipments. This extinguisher automatically discharges dry powder, extinguishing fire. As this extinguisher has the extinguishing capability applicable to the nominal protection area, objects outside the area cannot be properly extinguished. However only its number is being requested according to the floor area in the related laws, and the extinguishing capability depends on the distance from a fire source. In this study we tried to investigate the extinguishing capability of the automatic spreading fire extinguisher in accordance with horizontal separation distance from a fire source. It appeared that the maximum horizontal separation distance was about 30 cm for both class A and B fire to be certainly extinguished.
