  • We would like to develop a short-term model to predict the time-related concentration of ozone whose reaction mechanism is complex. The paper targets Seoul where an ozone alert system has recently been employed. In order to develop a short-term prediction model for ozone, we suggested the Ozone Peak Indicator(OPI), an equivalent of the potential daily maximum ozone concentration, with precursors being the only limiting factor, and we calculated the Ozone Peak Indicarot as OPI={$ rac{(O_3)_{max}cdot(H_{eH})_{max}(Rad)_{max}$ to preclude the influence of mixing height and solar radiation on the daily maximum ozone concentration. The OPI on the day of the prediction is to be calcultated by using the relation between OPI and the initial value of precursors. The basic prediction formula for time-related ozone concentration was established as $O_3(1)={(OPI)cdot Rad(t-2)H_{eH}}$, using the OPI, solar radiation two hours before prediction and mixing height. We developed, along with the basic formula for predicting photochemical oxidants, "SEOM"(Seoul Empirical Oxidants Model), a Fortran program that helps predict solar radiation and mixing height needed in the prediction of ozone pollution. When this model was applied to Seoul and an analysis of the correlation between the observed and the predicted ozone concentrations was made through SEOM, there appeared a very high correlation, with a coefficient of 0.815. SEOM can be described as a short-term prediction model for ozone concentration in large cities that takes into account the initial values of precursors, and changes in solar radiation and mixing height. SEOM can reflect the local characteristics of a particular and region can yield relatively good prediction results by a simple data input process.t process.

  • The author have studied the relationship between the maximum puberal growth stage in body height and the appearance of the adductor sesamoid of the thumb with wrist x-ray films. In addition to this, it has been investigated the age at which pubic hair appeared in boys, and the age at menarche in girls. The results were as follows: 1) The ossification of the adductor sesamoid of the thumb occured at 13-years-o-month in boys and 10-years-8-months in girls. 2) There was a close association between the age at maximum puberal growth in body height and the age when ossification of the adductor sesamoid of the thumb occured, and also in girls, the age at the menarche. 3) Appearance of the adductor sesamoid of the thumb indicated that maximum puberal growth in body height is imminent or has been reached. 4) The maximum puberal growth in body height occured 23 months earlier in girls than in boys, and ossification of the adductor sesamoid of the thumb 28 months earlier in girls. 5) Appearance of the pubic hair in boys was of no value for prediction of maximum puberal growth in body height. 6) Menarche is a reliable indication that the maximum puberal growth in body height has been reached or passed.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the quiet pavement on reducing a barrier height by using a prediction tool called SoundPLAN. METHODS : Firstly, the prediction was carried out to evaluate the difference in the maximum noise level at a building facade between the normal and the quiet pavements without a barrier. After calculating the noise reduction effect by the quiet pavement, a comparable barrier height to obtain the same noise reduction effect with it was predicted according to designable factors including road-building distance(10 m, 20 m, 40 m) and road-barrier distance(5 m, 10 m, 20 m, 30 m). RESULTS : The result showed that within the considered designable factors, the maximum barrier height was 37 m, 52 m, and 55 m to have the same noise reduction effect by the quiet pavement reducing 1 dBA, 3 dBA, and 5 dBA, respectively. It was evaluated that the barrier height increased with the increase of the road-building and road-barrier distances. To simulate the real situation in urban areas and to evaluate the combined effect of the normal/quiet pavement and barrier, the barrier height was fixed as 6 m. It was predicted that the noise level would reduce to as low as 0.2 dBA by the combination of normal pavement and barrier. On the other hand, the combination of the quiet pavement and barrier reduced 1.2 dBA, 3.2 dBA, and 5.2 dBA, respectively, for quiet pavement reducing 1 dBA, 3 dBA, and 5 dBA. CONCLUSIONS : A guideline needs to be suggested to select appropriate noise abatement schemes by considering factors such as the roadbuilding and road-barrier distances.

  • The current TW3 - based maximum height prediction technique used in KMAA(Korean Medical Academy of Auxology) is manual and subjective, and it requires a lot of time and effort in the medical treatment, while the interest in the child's growth is very high. In addition, the technique of classifying images using deep learning, especially convolutional neural networks, is used in many fields at a more accurate level than the human eyes, also there is no exception in the medical field. In this paper, we introduce a TW3 algorithm using deep learning, that uses the convolutional neural network to predict the growth level of the left hand bone, to predict the maximum height of child and youth in order to increase the reliability of predictions and improve the convenience of the doctor.

  • In the present study, the prediction methods of the crest settlement after impounding and the maximum internal settlement during dam construction were proposed through the analysis on settlement data at 38 monitored points of 36 Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dams (CFRDs). The results from this analysis provided that the crest settlement and the maximum internal settlement are increased in proportion to the dam height and the void ratio. However, the relationship between internal settlement and dam height for each void-ratio range plotted in semi-logarithmic scale is the nearly same. Also, the prediction of the crest settlement of the CFRD is possible through the maximum internal settlement during dam construction. In addition, it seems that the valley shape highly affects the dense dam body with high construction modulus. The results of this study will provide the useful tool for the design, construction and management of CFRDs.

  • For the machining of the sculptured surfaces on 5-axis CNC milling machine, the milling cutter direction vector was determined in the study (I) with 5-axis post-processing. Thus, it was possible to cut the sculptured surfaces on five-axis CNC milling machine with the end mill cutter. Then, for smooth machined surfaces in five-axis machining of free-from surfaces, this study develops an algorithm for prediction of cusp heights. Also, it generates tool path such that the cusp heights are constrained to a constant value or under a certain value. For prediction of the cusp height between two basis points, a common plane, containing the line crossing two basis points and the summation vector of two normal vectors at two basis points, is defined. The cusp height is the maximum value of scallops on the common plane after end mill cutter passes through the common plane. Sculptured surfaces were machined with CINCINNATI MILACRON 5-axis machining center, model 20V-80, using end mill cutter. Cusp heights were verified by 3-dimensional measuring machine with laser scanner, WEGU Messtechnik GmbH.

  • We have proposed a new method to accurately predict the resonance of Fabry-Perot Cavity (FPC) antennas enclosed with conducting side walls. When lateral directions of an FPC antenna are not blocked with metallic walls, the conventional technique is accurate enough to predict the resonance of the FPC antenna. However, when the FPC antenna has side walls, especially for case with only a short distance between the walls, the conventional prediction method yields an inaccurate result, inevitably requiring a tedious, time-consuming tuning process to determine the correct resonant height to provide the maximum antenna gain in a target frequency band using three-dimensional full-wave computer simulations. To solve that problem, we have proposed a new resonance prediction method to provide a more accurate resonant height calculation of FPC antennas by using the well-known resonance behavior of a rectangular resonant cavity. For a more physically insightful explanation of the new prediction formula, we have reinvestigated our proposal using a wave propagation characteristic in a hollow rectangular waveguide, which clearly confirms our approach. By applying the proposed technique to an FPC antenna covered with a partially reflecting superstrate consisting of continuously tapered meander loops, we have proved that our method is very accurate and readily applicable to various types of FPC antennas with lateral walls. Experimental result confirms the validness of our approach.

  • A new mixed-effects model was developed that predicts individual-tree total height for Pinus densiflora trees in Gangwon province as a function of individual-tree diameter (cm). The mixed-effects model contains two random-effects parameters. Maximum likelihood estimation was used to fit the model to 560 height-diameter observations of individual trees measured throughout Gwangwon province in 2007 as part of the National Forest Inventory Program in Korea. The new model is an improvement over fixed-effects models because it can be calibrated to a local area, such as an inventory plot or individual stand. The new model also appears to be an improvement over the Forest Resources Evaluation and Prediction Program for the ten calibration trees used in this study. An example is provided that describes how to estimate the random-effects parameters using ten calibration trees.

  • The Central East Sea Tsunami caused huge damage to the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula, eapecially Imwon port was damaged relatively strongly beacause of water depth variation which makes the wave concentration on this port. there are many virtual tsunami in east sea which has a possibility of happening. So, it is very important to expect the region which may be damaged by vritual tsunmis. In this study, modified dispersion-correction terms are used. The modified scheme has the advantage of using the constant spatial grid size and time step size even in real topography. Dynamic linking technique and staggered grid system are used. Using this model some cases of virtual tsunami was simulated and check the region which is occured maximum wave heights on the eastern sea of the Korean peninsula.

  • To obtain basic information on the improvement of naked barley production. and to clarify the relation-ships between yield or yield components and some meteorogical factors for yield prediction were the objectives of this study. The basic data used in this study were obtained from the experiments carried out for 16 years from 1958 to 1974 at the Chon-nam Provincial Office of Rural development. The simple correlation coefficients and multiple regression coefficients among the yield or yield components and meteorogical factors were calculated for the study. Days to emergence ranged from 8 to 26 days were reduced under conditions of mean minimum air temperature were high. The early emergence contributed to increasing plant height and number of tillers as well as to earlier maximum tillering and heading date. The plant height before wintering showed positive correlations with the hours of sunshine. On the other hand, plant height measured on march 1st and March 20th showed positive correlation with the amount of precipitation and negative correlation with the hours of sunshine during the wintering or regrowth stage. Kernel weights were affected by the hours of sunshine and rainfall after heading, and kernel weights were less variable when the hours of sunshine were relatively long and rainfalls in May were around 80 to 10mm. It seemed that grain yields were mostly affected by the climatic condition in March. showing the negative correlation between yield and mean air temperature, minimum air temperature during the period. In the other hand, the yield was shown to have positive correlation with hours of sunshine. Some yield prediction equations were obtained from the data of mean air temperature, mean minimum temperature and accumulated air temperature in March. Yield prediction was also possible by using multiple regression equations, which were derived from yield data and the number of spikes and plant height as observed at May 20th.
